Kolkata: Police probing a cyber fraud case where a 72-year-old Salt Lake resident lost Rs 32.3 lakh after being duped by a woman claiming to be from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) arrested the accused on Wednesday.
Accused Ananya Sarkar, who met the elderly woman under the fake identity of Sreeja Roy, convinced her to take a loan against her FD and pay her the amount while promising to settle an old and disputed insurance policy the 72-year-old had.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged by the victim's son, who works abroad, exposing a month-long con targeting the elderly widow over a bogus insurance recovery scheme. According to the complaint, Sarkar, a resident of Agarpara, lured the CL Block resident by claiming she could recover up to Rs 50 lakh from a lapsed insurance policy.
Police said the fraud began in Nov 2024 when Sarkar contacted her and gained her trust by calling her to a swanky office in New Town and even introducing her to a "superior officer" while feigning empathy and promising significant returns. According to the FIR at Bidhannagar East PS, she asked the woman to initially pay a processing fee of Rs 80,000. When the woman said she didn't have cash, Sarkar allegedly convinced her to take loans against fixed deposits, citing processing fees and other fictitious charges.
Over two and a half months — from Nov 19, 2024, to Jan 31, 2025 — Rs 32.3 lakh were withdrawn in 10 separate transactions as the woman handed the cash over to Sarkar, meeting her at different places ranging from shopping malls to bank branches. The fraud came to light in Feb 2025 when the woman's son returned to Salt Lake, overheard a suspicious phone conversation at home, and intervened. Realising his mother was deceived, he recorded video evidence and lodged a complaint on Feb 10.
Following probe, police tracked the accused's real identity and arrested Sarkar from her residence in Agarpara. She was produced before a local court, which granted police four days' custody for further interrogation. "We are interrogating her to find the rest of the gang members. We are also trying to trace the money trail and will try our best to ensure the woman gets her money back," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police.

In 2000, the Delhi Police declared a man wanted in a kidnapping-for-ransom case as a 'proclaimed offender'. Investigators searched for him everywhere but he had vanished. The leads had all dried up and the case went cold. Twenty-five years later, Suneet Agarwal, now 45, was traced to Thane in Mumbai earlier this month. After escaping from Delhi, Agarwal had changed his name, acquired a new identity and even married and started a family. At first, he provided loans for the purchase of vehicles before turning to manufacturing imitation jewellery. 'He would frequently change his appearance, move homes and switch mobile phone numbers,' said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime Branch. 'He even went the extra mile and avoided getting in touch with his relatives or neighbours in Delhi. He would also change his address every six months,' Yadav added. However, Agarwal ran out of luck last week. The first lead in the case, the police said, came last year. 'The main breakthrough happened because of technical evidence which we won't be able to reveal,' a police officer said. 'However, we reached Agarwal after we arrested and interrogated his two brothers in Delhi last year. They were also wanted in the case,' a police officer privy to the investigation said. The Crime branch team that conducted the operation was led by Arvind Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), and inspectors Mangesh Tyagi and Robin Tyagi. On January 29, 2000, Shree Nath Yadav of Raj Nagar in Ghaziabad, was kidnapped by Suneet Agarwal alias Pappi alias Babli. 'He called Yadav's employer Ram Gopal demanding Rs 40,000 as ransom,' a police officer said. 'Both Suneet Agarwal and Yadav's employer ran cloth shops in Chandni Chowk. So Agarwal knew Yadav. Agarwal was joined by his brothers who also assaulted Yadav.' The police said Agarwal and his brothers took the man to Red Fort, forced him into a car and took him to the basement of a bungalow in Kalkaji. 'They confined him inside that basement where they beat him up severely,' the officer said. 'Agarwal aimed a revolver at Yadav's head and asked him to call his employer, coercing him to meet at Safdarjung Airport bridge with the money,' he said. 'When Agarwal forced Yadav to call again, a policeman Sumer Singh picked up the call. Agarwal threatened him (the officer) too.' But when Yadav's employer did not budge, Agarwal released Yadav at Tughlaq Road. A case was registered at Kotwali police station and Agarwal was arrested before being released on bail. The police also filed a chargesheet. Agarwal, however, decided not to join the trial and was subsequently declared a 'proclaimed offender'. In the beginning of July, the police said, they were finally able to trace Agarwal's location in Mumbai. 'We saw him and started chasing him. He jumped into an autorickshaw and once we started following, he switched places with the autorickshaw driver to mislead the police team,' an officer said. 'He had taken a gamcha (scarf) from the driver and was hiding his face with it. But our team recognised and grabbed him. It was a chase that went on for 5 to 6 km.' The officer said Agarwal had completely erased his past and started afresh in Mumbai. 'His wife had no idea that he was ever involved in a crime,' the officer said. Widow denies rejecting promised job, seeks justice from TN Human Rights Commission
TIRUNELVELI: The widow of a van driver who died after he was allegedly beaten up by three police personnel in Sankarankovil in March 2024 following a freak accident on Friday complained to the State Human Rights Commission that she is yet to be provided a government job and compensation as promised earlier. The district administration replied that she had turned down the job. But the woman denied it. According to sources, M Murugan (36), a dalit, was allegedly beaten to death by three Sankarankovil police personnel after his van reportedly hit an autorickshaw. Following the incident, over 2,000 SC people staged a road blockade in Sankarankovil. Meena and her family members accepted Murugan's body 18 days later, only after the district administration promised her a job and compensation. While the state government ordered CB-CID probe into Murugan's death, the SHRC took suo motu cognisance. Appearing before SHRC member V Kannadasan on Friday, Murugan's widow Meena (33) said the Tenkasi district administration officials had promised that she would be given anganwadi worker post with salary of Rs 12,000 within a month of his death and shifted to village assistant post later to support her three children. She broke down before the commission, stating she could not admit even one of her children to college due to the financial crisis. In response, the district administration claimed that Meena had refused the job, but she denied it. Kannadasan directed a Deputy Collector-rank officer from Tenkasi to file an affidavit after speaking with Meena, during the next hearing. Speaking to the media persons later, Meena said the district administration had told her that she was not educationally qualified for a job with Rs 12,000 salary. "I never rejected the job offer. ‘Get out of the way, I am going to fire': Ex-serviceman shoots woman dead at Rohtak railway station
An ex-serviceman, who was allegedly in an inebriated state, shot a woman dead at the Rohtak railway station in Haryana in full public view on Friday night. The police identified the accused as Vajir Singh and said he was caught at the spot and later arrested on charges of murder. The victim, Pinky, was rushed to the nearby Rohtak PGIMS by her son, Lakshya, but doctors declared her dead on arrival. According to the police, Singh had to pay Rs 12 lakh to Pinky's husband, Rammehar. He had allegedly taken the money, saying he would get Lakshya a job, but Rammehar told the police that he did not deliver on his promise. The matter was allegedly raised in the village panchayat, where Singh had promised that he would return the money, but did not. Pinky was a resident of Julana while Singh resides in the nearby Lijwana Khurd village. Both Pinky and Singh used to work in the same company located at Hisar bypass and used to commute daily from Rohtak to their native places by train, the police said. 'Last night, they finished work and reached the railway station. Pinky was accompanied by Lakshya. While people were waiting for their trains at the platform, Singh shouted, 'Aage se hat jao, main goli chala raha hoon (Get out of the way, I am going to shoot)'. Within moments, he opened fire, and the bullet hit Pinky in the back. Lakshya, who was also standing at the platform, reached the spot and sought people's help,' a police official who is part of the investigating team said. Singh tried to run away but was caught by a team of Government Railway Police and district police personnel. According to the police, after he shot Pinky, Singh kept standing on the platform and kept fiddling with his phone. As chaos broke out at the platform, he boarded a train to Kurukshetra, but before it could depart, the police arrived, and onlookers led them to Singh.
