Flipkart bets on livestreaming and videos to win over online shoppers

Flipkart sees video commerce as a key strategy, with two-thirds of Gen Z using videos to shop. Usage is also surging in tier-II and III cities, where video-led formats are gaining rapid traction
New Delhi
Walmart-owned e-commerce major Flipkart is leaning heavily into social video and livestreaming to attract young shoppers who are glued to their smartphones. The move reflects a broader strategy of the company to seek long-term customer loyalty by making online shopping more immersive and interactive.
Online shopping with live commerce
Using videos to display and promote products has become one of the company's key new strategies, Neha Agrahari, a director at Flipkart told Bloomberg News. 'Users prefer to watch a video and make a decision' when shopping, she said.
Agrahari believes video commerce is a natural progression, particularly with two-thirds of Gen Z consumers now favouring this style of shopping. Notably, 65 per cent of video and livestreaming interactions originate from India's tier-III and tier-III cities.
What is live commerce?
Live commerce merges real-time product purchasing with audience interaction via chat features or reaction buttons. In China, it has revolutionised the retail sector and emerged as a key sales channel. It now plays a central role in marketing campaigns for Singles' Day—a major shopping event in China—and is widely used as an effective digital strategy to enhance customer engagement and drive sales.
Competing for e-commerce dominance
Though video-based retailing is not new, Flipkart is banking on the format to outperform rivals such as Amazon.com Inc and Reliance Industries Ltd in the highly competitive Indian market. With around 650 million smartphone users in the country—and over 270 million of them shopping online—India has now overtaken the US as the world's second-largest e-retail market.
Flipkart's own data shows that video-led engagement is surging. In the first half of 2025, over 200 million users interacted with videos while shopping on its platform, a significant increase from 75 million in the same period last year.
Livestreams and influencers drive engagement
Flipkart began integrating video content into its app approximately 18 months ago. These videos promote a wide range of products, from sunscreen to electronics. Livestreams also allow users to ask real-time questions and receive responses from influencers and product experts, enhancing the customer experience. This approach mirrors successful models in China and other parts of Asia, where video-driven commerce is widely used. Other Indian players, including Meesho, which is backed by SoftBank Group Corp, are also adopting similar strategies by hiring influencers to promote products ranging from cosmetics to health supplements.
Building studios to boost sales
Agrahari stated that video-led shopping is already boosting sales in categories like fashion, beauty, personal care, and home decor. The platform now plans to expand this format to electronics and fitness products. To support content creation, Flipkart is constructing physical studios in Gurugram, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. These studios are designed to offer a seamless shooting and editing experience for its video creators, she said.
Growth in livestream engagement
Engagement with daily livestreams has seen a dramatic increase — up 17 times compared to last year, according to Agrahari. This growth is partly fuelled by practical and engaging product demonstrations. For instance, users test T-shirts by dipping them in water to check for colour fastness or use various foods to assess kitchen appliances' performance.

Kolhapuri chappal could step into global market after Prada row

MUMBAI: From 'chappal chor' to brand ambassador, of sorts, Italian luxury fashion house Prada has made a swift about-turn, expressing its willingness to discuss a revenue-sharing model for Kolhapuri chappals made by traditional Indian artisans and a symbol of Marathi pride. Local artisans are also demanding that Prada use the 'Kolhapuri' label when selling these chappals in the international market. Prada has acknowledged that its Spring/Summer 2026 men's footwear line (right) was inspired by Kolhapuri chappals, after backlash over lack of credit to the original artisans. (Ht Archives/Photo by Mahendra Parikh and Vidya Subramanian / Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) Prada's pivot comes after the international fashion brand showcased the classic T-strapped, flat and intricately braided chappal at the spring summer 2026 menswear collection at the Milan Fashion Week recently. This drew loud protests from local Kolhapuri artisans, who accused Prada of 'cultural appropriation' for failing to give due recognition to the chappals, which represent an 800-year tradition that originated in Kolhapur in Maharashtra. Lalit Gandhi, president of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (MACCIA), had written to Prada on June 25, urging acknowledgement and collaboration regarding traditional Kolhapuri footwear designs. Gandhi told HT that Lorenzo Bertelli, head, corporate social responsibility at Prada, had replied to him on June 27. Gandhi said, 'We welcome the response from Prada, which admitted that the design it had showcased had been inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear.' The fashion house, Bertelli had added in his letter, was ready to 'recognise the value of specialised craftspeople by meaningful exchange with local artists and MACCIA'. Gandhi said he interpreted this to mean that Prada was open to working out a revenue-sharing formula with local Kolhapuri artisans, for the sale of the traditional chappals in the global market. He added that a team from Prada would soon arrive in India for discussions. 'Kolhapuri chappals are priced between ₹ 400 and ₹ 4,000, while Prada sells similar footwear for more than ₹ 1 lakh. So there is huge scope. This row has opened the doors of the global market for Kolhapuri chappals and local craftsmen will greatly benefit.' A statement issued by MACCIA said, 'Lorenzo Bertelli, head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Prada Group… acknowledged the global recognition of Kolhapuri chappals, which are symbolic of Kolhapur's identity and Maharashtra's cultural pride.' After the controversy broke last week, Kolhapuri artisans, led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dhananjay Mahadik, met chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday and urged him to advocate for them with the central government, which could then push their case with the luxury fashion brand. With Prada now acknowledging the signature Kolhapuri chappal, Mahadik said, 'I welcome the letter by Prada. But along with revenue-sharing, we are also demanding that the fashion house use a label recognising the footwear as 'Kolhapuri footwear' when it sells the chappals in the global market. The craft and heritage of Kolhapur should get due recognition worldwide.'

MSRTC to set up 100-acre vehicle scrapping facility near Sambhaji Nagar

MUMBAI: In a bid to increase the revenue of the debt-ridden Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), the transport department has decided to set up a mega vehicle scrapping facility near Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar on 100 acre of land. It will be on Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis and the bidder will be selected on the basis of share he offers in revenue. The upcoming facility would be around 20 times bigger than the existing facilities in the state, which are on 2-5 acre of land. Mumbai, India –08 June 2018: A View of ST buses lined up at the Mumbai Central depot, after Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) workers went on a flash strike, in Mumbai, on Friday, June 08, 2018. (Photo by Bhushan Koyande/HT) In 2021, the central government came up with a policy for scientifically scrapping vehicles which are over 15 years old, under the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) guidelines. Maharashtra government adopted this policy in 2023, and as per the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS), guidelines have been laid down for granting recognition to such scrapping centres. The largest facility will be built at Khuldabad in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, on a 100-acre MSRTC-owned land parcel. Currently, eight authorised entities operate scrapping centers in the state, each with an annual capacity of scrapping a minimum of 1,000 vehicles. Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Friday held a meeting regarding the scrapping of vehicles and facility centres. 'This new centre will ensure that old vehicles are scientifically dismantled and their parts are permanently disposed off in a way that prevents reuse. The initiative is expected to generate a new and sustainable revenue stream for MSRTC,' he said. This decision is expected to earn revenue for the debt-ridden MSRTC. The white paper released last week on the financial situation of MSRTC showed that its accumulated losses for five decades stand at ₹ 10,322 crore while dues towards employees' provident fund and gratuity are ₹ 3,297 crore. A transport department officer said that the site for the new facility has access from different regions of the state. 'It's on a fast track route from Mumbai and Vidarbha region due to Samruddhi Express highway. It is close to north Maharashtra and also western Maharashtra. In the coming years, around 6000 ST buses of MSRTC would go for scrapping as they would be old. Vehicles from government offices will also go for scrapping. So there is a huge scope for this facility to give good revenue to MSRTC.' He also added that MSRTC is planning to float tender on the basis of revenue-sharing model instead of a one-time amount, and the company which will offer a bigger share would get the work.
