4 'mudders' to bet on at the 2025 Preakness who thrive in the rain
It's looking like the storms hammering the East Coast this week may pass by post time for the 150th Preakness Stakes. That doesn't mean the damage won't already be done to the track — and that may end up being the biggest factor at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday.
Fortunately, and despite the smaller nine-horse field, there are quite a few contenders who have experience on off tracks entered into the field for the second leg of the Triple Crown.

American Promise

Before the Kentucky Derby, the last time American Promise raced on a muddy track was back on December 29 when the D. Wayne Lukas star won a 1 1/16th-mile race at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas. On a muddy Churchill Downs track, American Promise pulled up in 16th in the Run for the Roses.

Baffert's Preakness entry is starting on the rail — just like Baffert's Citizen Bull did at the Kentucky Derby — but with a much smaller field than we saw at Churchill Downs, there's less reason to worry about getting squeezed out. Goal Oriented has won the only two events he's entered, which includes a muddy race on the Kentucky Derby undercard, and carries a 109 Equibase Speed Figure on a wet track, which leads the Preakness field.

Umberto Rispoli: 'Triple Crown Campaign Was Amazing' originally appeared on Paulick Report. Jockey Umberto Rispoli is no stranger to success. He won 15 graded stakes in 2024, has collected numerous riding championships and records back in his home country of Italy and is one of the most respected grass riders in this country. But nothing has compared to the ride he's been on the past couple of months. Rispoli is the regular jockey for Journalism, runner-up to Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Belmont Stakes (G1) and winner of the Preakness (G1) and Haskell (G1) at Monmouth Park. 'Winning a classic race is the goal of every jockey every year,' Rispoli said, 'and trying to find a horse like Journalism is the key. Every year you wish to get a horse like him.' He calls the victory in the Preakness the biggest achievement of his career, which has taken him all around the world. From Italy he moved to France. He's also ridden in England, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong before coming to the United States in 2020. Through it all, he's ridden some quality racehorses, but now there's a new name at the top of the Rispoli Top Ten list. 'I have to put him on the top,' he says of Journalism. 'It was a big achievement for me to be a favorite in the Kentucky Derby and then the favorite in the Belmont against Sovereignty. The whole journey of the Triple Crown campaign was amazing. Plus you put the Haskell in there. So far it's been a wonderful season.' What makes the Rispoli/Journalism union different from his other successful partnerships is that most of that success has come on the turf. 'It's the first time I have found a real good dirt horse,' Rispoli claims. 'I worked him at Del Mar last summer and then after his first start we saw something different in him. We knew he was a two-turn horse, no doubt about it.' Rispoli has three winners so far at Del Mar, a noticeable drop-off from past year's production but with good reason. He missed the first Saturday of the meet when he traveled back east to ride Journalism at Monmouth Park and he's gone again this weekend. 'So far it's been a slow Del Mar for me, which I would say is unusual,' Rispoli said. 'When you're not here, it costs you some rides. But if that affords you the chance to ride horses like Journalism or Johannes, you do it.' Rispoli was in New York Saturday to ride Johannes in the Fourstardave (G1) at Saratoga. With all the traveling he's been doing lately, he's definitely piling-up the frequent flyer miles. 'I like that,' Rispoli insists. 'When I was in Europe I used to travel in a car for five hours just to ride one horse and then come back. When you have a day to fly around and ride good horses it gives you motivation.' Even with all this recent success, Umberto says he's not one to rest on his laurels. 'Once you win a big race you just forget about it and move on,' Rispoli said. 'Enjoy the day, enjoy the moment but there are other big races out there to win. If I had a bad day yesterday, I'm more hungry than ever.' Coming as close as he did to winning the Kentucky Derby like he did this year only intensifies that hunger in his bid to win the biggest prize in horse racing. 'You need a good horse and a barn that supports you,' Rispoli believes. 'Irad (Ortiz Jr.) and Flavien (Prat) on the East Coast ride for specific trainers. Here, Juan (Hernandez) is riding a lot for Bob (Baffert). You need those stables that support you from the beginning when the 2-year-olds comes around.' Rispoli has gained the confidence of trainer Michael McCarthy and owner Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and he has every intention of rewarding that confidence all the way to the Breeders' Cup this fall at Del Mar. Mike Repole joins UFL: Why entrepreneur is investing in spring football league
The UFL is bringing a new investor into the fold as it enters a critical offseason ahead of its third season. The league announced on Thursday, July 31 that Mike Repole would be joining the UFL's ownership group and would head up its business operations. Repole, 56, is an entrepreneur who is best known for co-founding two sports drink companies: Glaceau, the maker of vitaminwater and smartwater, and BODYARMOR. He sold the companies to the Coca-Cola Company for more than $12 billion. Currently, Repole is the majority owner of NOBULL, an athletic apparel company backed by Tom Brady. He also owns Repole Stable, a horse-racing operation that has produced multiple Breeders' Cup and Belmont Stakes winners, along with Uncle Mo, who sired 2016 Kentucky Derby champion Nyquist. "The UFL is thrilled to welcome a visionary like Mike Repole to our ownership group," UFL president and CEO Russ Brandon said in a statement announcing the development. Chief among them is football's ever-increasing popularity. "Football really has distanced itself from all the other sports right now," Repole told USA TODAY in an interview. "When you see the top 100 sports shows, football has 85 of them. It's just amazing." Repole noted that even offseason NFL events, such as the NFL scouting combine and NFL draft, draw in millions of viewers. He believes that audience indicates an appetite for football on which a spring league, like the UFL, could capitalize. Already, Repole is confident in the league's "good" viewership. He knows it won't compare to top NFL or college football events, but he is confident it can rival the viewership of its direct competition, such as the WNBA, MLS, NHL, NBA and MLB. "For a league that has the lowest awareness out of all these other leagues, it does pretty well," Repole said of the UFL's TV ratings. Repole credited Brandon and Daryl Johnston for creating an on-field product that has drawn fans to watch the fledgling league. However, the 56-year-old knows it will be critical to enhance the at-game experience for the UFL to establish roots. "When some of the stadiums look like COVID games and there are no fans, and there really isn't a cheering section, I think there's a disconnect with how the product is connecting," Repole explained. That attendance challenge is one of the factors that excites Repole about joining the UFL. He already has started assessing ways to improve that, from potential franchise relocation to venue changes. "I think the biggest opportunity is picking the right city, picking the right markets, picking the right venues and then really connecting with every fan, one fan at a time, and spending more time in that local region," he detailed. What will that process look like for the UFL in 2026? Repole and the league are still mapping that out.
