Kedarnath-Gaurikund helicopter crash: CM Dhami chairs high-level meeting; 7 dead
The meeting, held at the Chief Minister's residence, was attended by the Chief Secretary, the Disaster Management Secretary, UCADA CEO, Garhwal Commissioner, and other top officials.
Earlier in the day, at around 5:30 am, a helicopter en route from Kedarnath to Guptkashi crashed near Gaurikund. The helicopter, operated by Aryan Aviation, had seven people on board -- five adult passengers, one infant, and the pilot. All seven lost their lives in the crash, according to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
The victims have been identified as Captain Rajbir Singh Chauhan, Vikram Rawat, Vinod Devi, Trishti Singh, Rajkumar Suresh Jaiswal, Shraddha Rajkumar Jaiswal, and an infant named Kashi.
As soon as information about the crash was received, SDRF Commander Arpan Yadav directed rescue teams to the site. The crash site was in a dense and difficult forested area, making access challenging. However, joint teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and local police carried out a swift and coordinated rescue operation. All seven bodies were recovered and are being brought down to the road head by the SDRF team.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) would conduct a detailed probe into the incident.
In light of the crash, the frequencies of helicopter operations to Char Dham will be reduced as a precautionary measure. Enhanced surveillance and operational reviews are also being carried out by DGCA, the aviation authority said in its statement.
Providing more details of the incident, the DGCA added, 'Today, Aryan Aviation Bell 407 helicopter VT-BKA operating a flight on the Shri Kedarnath ji - Aryan Helipad Guptkashi sector was involved in an accident. There were five passengers, one infant, and one crew member on board. The helicopter took off at 05:19 hours for Guptkashi and crashed near Gaurikund.' (ANI)

Bhagalpur: Tight security arrangements have been made across Bhagalpur district for Muharram. The district administration has prohibited playing of disc jockey (DJ) and displaying of banned weapons during the Muharram processions, in view of the district being a communally sensitive. At the meeting, the DM directed the electricity department to remove the hanging overhead electricity wires so that the tazia procession is taken out without any difficulty. The engineers and officials of the PHED and Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been directed to ensure that the tube-wells and hand-pumps on the route of procession remain functional. "We will ensure peaceful observation of Muharram in the district. We have asked members of the peace committee to ensure that unnecessary gathering or hooliganism do not take place on the routes of the tazia processions," the DM said. Bhagalpur SSP Hriday Kant said that the senior officials of the district police, SHOs and other police personnel have been directed to ensure peace during the Muharram. Drones and CCTV would monitor the events, he added.

Ahead of Bahuda Yatra, Sudarsan Pattnaik creates sand sculpture in Puri
Puri (Odisha) [India], July 5 (ANI): Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik paid tribute to the Bahuda Yatra with a striking sand sculpture on Puri beach on July 4, as the coastal town geared up for the return of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra to the Jagannath Temple from Shri Gundicha Temple. Preparations for the ceremonial return of the chariots, Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana, are also in full swing, as thousands gathered along the Grand Road (Bada Danda) to witness the divine procession. Girijashankar Sarangi, a devotee, shared the significance of the occasion: 'Mahaprabhu was born here at Gundicha Temple... Today, after nine days of celebrations, Mahaprabhu will be heading home. On the way, Mahaprabhu's chariot will stop at the Mausi Maa temple, where he will be offered poda pitha, and it will then be distributed as prasad among devotees. NIA arrests two more 'US donkey route' human traffickers following raids in Himachal, Delhi
New Delhi [India], July 5 (ANI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two 'US donkey route' human traffickers after searches at two locations in Himachal Pradesh and Delhi, the agency said on Saturday. The accused, identified as Sunny alias Sunny Donker of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district and Shubham Sandhal alias Deep Hundi of Ropar in Punjab, and currently residing in Delhi's Peeragarhi, were associates of Gagandeep Singh alias Goldy, arrested earlier in March. They were arrested on Friday. NIA said Gagandeep was arrested on a complaint of a victim who was illegally trafficked to the US using the infamous 'Dunki' route and was deported back to India in February this year. NIA had chargesheeted Gagandeep, a resident of Tilak Nagar in New Delhi, in the case on June 27. As per NIA investigations, Gagandeep Singh used to take around Rs 45 lakh from each victim on the pretext of sending them to the US on a valid legal visa. 'He would then illegally send them on an arduous journey via multiple countries, including Spain, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico,' said the NIA. He had sent more than 100 victims illegally to the US in this manner before being arrested. Sunny was the main associate of Gagandeep Singh and played a key role in facilitating the journey of the victims on the donkey route. 'The victims were physically and mentally harassed on the way by the donkers and agents seeking to make more money. Shubham Sandhal was an important hawala courier operator involved in transferring funds to donkers in Latin America. Gagandeep used him to transfer part of the money taken from the victims to the donkeys based in Latin America,' said the NIA in a statement. NIA, which took over the case from Punjab Police on March 13, 2025, is continuing with its investigation to unravel the entire illegal racket and conspiracy. (ANI)
