SCR to fence tracks at vulnerable locations to prevent trespass
SCR General Manager Arun Kumar Jain, on Monday (April 21), held a video conference with the six divisional railway managers — Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntakal, Guntur and Nanded — at the Rail Nilayam where he was briefed about the progress of work which will also enhance safety.
He called for special drives to be carried out by the officials/supervisors on precautions to be followed by the employees/contract workers while executing the track maintenance works and on loading/unloading activities etc.
In view of summer, Mr. Jain also discussed on fire safety precautions to be strictly followed like ensuring sufficient quantity of fire safety equipment like fire extinguishers, smoke detecting devices and ensure proper working of fire alarm system in the trains and station premises.
With regard to the crew working hours, the duty rosters of loco pilots, assistant loco pilots and guards should be prepared in a such manner that it minimizes their working hours and enables proper rest at a proper time. The crew lobbies/running rooms over the zone should be regularly checked, said the GM.
He later gave away 'Employee of the Month' safety awards to six employees — three from Vijayawada Division, two from Secunderabad Division and one from Guntur Division — for showing alertness and taking swift action to prevent unsafe conditions.
These employees were from categories like station masters, point mans, track maintainers and technicians. Mr. Jain has congratulated the awardees and appreciated them for the commitment in discharging their duties with utmost dedication, said a press release.

HYDERABAD: Passengers travelling on the Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 20704) from Yeshwantpur to Kacheguda on Friday evening reported water leakage from the air-conditioning units. Complaints were raised with the concerned staff, but no action was taken until now. According to a service provider on board, the leakage occurs when the temperature is set too low, with the problem reportedly affecting even the pilot's cabin. Speaking to TNIE, Vijayaraghavan, a retired government employee travelling from Anantapur to Kacheguda in the C13 AC Chair Car, said, 'It is pathetic to see Vande Bharat facing such issues. We have paid more than `1,000 for this journey. The service providers keep moving from one side to the other, but no one is addressing the issue.' When another drop of water fell on his head, he added, 'It is abhishekam'. When TNIE visited the nearby coaches C12, C11, C10, and C9, it observed tissue papers placed at certain leakage points to control dripping water. However, this measure proved ineffective, leaving passengers to travel in discomfort. 'The leakage from AC units happens when the temperature is set too low. This issue has been persisting for a very long time, but no measures have been taken so far, despite repeated complaints to our higher officials. They just fix tissues, not the issue,' said a service provider on board. He explained that the same condition exists in the pilot's cabin, while executive chair car coaches remain unaffected, with zero issues, on Friday evening. Another passenger, speaking to this newspaper, complained about the water dripping issue using the 'At Your Service' complaint number. The officials who answered the call said that an onboard service provider would check the problem, but it was not resolved. 'The train was already delayed by more than an hour, and now water is dripping from above. At first, it happened once every 15 minutes, but as time passed, it began dripping very frequently. Is this what we are paying for?' asked the passenger. When SCR officials were contacted regarding the issue, they responded that it is because of excessive cooling of the condenser, which also depends on the outside temperature. They stated that the issue has been brought to notice, the concerned officials have been sensitised in this regard, and the coach is under observation.

HC orders transfer of ‘distressed' Kolhapur tusker to Gujarat trust; math plans to move SC
Mumbai/Kolhapur: Giving priority to animal welfare over the right to use them in religious rites, Bombay high court has directed a Jain math in Kolhapur to transfer their elephant, Mahadevi, to a temple trust in Jamnagar, Gujarat, within two weeks. Officials from the Jain math at Nandani stated that Mahadevi was under their care since 1992. Devotees worship the elephant, and the math would appeal to the Supreme Court to allow them to keep Mahadevi, citing emotional and spiritual connections, the officials said. "…we have considered and chosen the survival of the elephant and its right to quality life, over and above the rights of men to use the elephant for religious rites…This court has duty under the doctrine parens patriae to secure the rights of the voiceless and hapless Mahadevi," said the court, dismissing a petition by the Jain math who owned Mahadevi since 1992. The math had challenged a high-power committee's orders directing Mahadevi's transfer to Radhe Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust in Jamnagar. The committee's order was based on a complaint by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that Mahadevi "is exhibiting signs of physical and psychological distress". The HC, through the order, also requested the chief wildlife warden of Maharashtra to issue a transport permit, and the chief wildlife warden of Gujarat to issue a no-objection certificate, if necessary, to effect the said transfer. Peta India is grateful to Bombay HC for granting Mahadevi an opportunity to live the rest of her life safe and in the company of other elephants, and urges the organisers of religious ceremonies to opt for life-size robotic elephants instead."

Officials told to ensure 100% e-KYC compliance of ration card holders
Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs K.H. Muniyappa directed officials to ensure that the e-KYC of all ration card holders was completed at the earliest. He was speaking at the Mysuru divisional-level officers' meeting held here on Friday. Urging the officials to expedite the completion of the e-KYC process, the Minister said steps should be taken to make sure that the ration card holders complete the e-KYC norms. Setting a month's deadline for the completion of the exercise, the Minister said that ration card holders should also be warned that their ration supply could be withheld, pending e-KYC completion. Officials were instructed to constitute committees to create public awareness at the district level. On the vacancies in the Legal Metrology Department, Mr. Muniyappa said that steps will be initiated to fill up vacancies in due course. He also directed the officials to ensure the safe preservation of the food grains stored in go-downs and those procured under the Minimum Support Price scheme. Manoz Jain, Secretary, Departments of Food and Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, Legal Metrology, Planning, Programme Monitoring, and Statistics, said that vacant posts in the department will be temporarily assigned to other officers while vacant posts of food inspectors will be handled temporarily by revenue inspectors of the Revenue Department. Mr. Jain instructed that Aadhaar cards of people from other States be verified, and that ration supplies be ensured even to hilly areas and remote places in Chamarajanagar district where only 10 to 15 houses exist. On the e-KYC exercise, Mr. Jain said that ration shopkeepers must tell members with incomplete e-KYCs that their food supplies will be withheld, and signatures must be obtained from the members as proof of having been informed. Vasireddi Vijaya Jyothsna, Commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies Department, said that nearly 1.69 lakh people have not completed their e-KYC, and hence mooted the idea of giving a little more time for single-member ration card holders to comply with the e-KYC. Officials and staff from various departments, including M.S.N. Babu, Controller of Legal Metrology, and Jagadish M.K., Commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies Department, were present.
