The KwaZulu-Natal youth parliament has called for a complete overhaul of the 'outdated' school curriculum to better prepare pupils for future careers.
While some schools have started incorporating AI into the syllabus, such as coding, others are left behind.
More than 70 delegates representing the MK Party, IFP, ANC, DA, EFF and NFP condemned the syllabus as 'disconnected and obsolete'.
They called for the urgent inclusion of AI and digital literacy, entrepreneurship, climate awareness, African history and mental health support, arguing a curriculum stuck in the past cannot prepare pupils for a world that has moved on.

Malema's revenge politics puts ANC on notice
Julius Malema could be using the no-confidence threat to pressure the ANC, warning that arrogance will cost the party once again. EFF leader Julius Malema has vowed the EFF will vote with the DA to oust President Cyril Ramaphosa in the mooted motion of no confidence. If this move is successful, it could see DA leader and Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen becoming the first white president since the dawn of democracy in 1994. Malema warns of 'white president' 'I want to warn you that this country will have a white president. Steenhuisen will be president if the ANC is behaving the way it is doing,' said Malema yesterday. 'The motion of no confidence will come, we will vote with the DA. Then, when it is time elect a president, we will abstain and the ANC will lose.' Although Malema undertook to vote with the DA, he said his party is not working with the DA. However, the tone of Malema's threat to vote out Ramaphosa appeared to be a complete rejection, but it also indicated a readiness to compromise – a veiled attempt to lure the ANC into agreeing to cooperate with the EFF. MK party's silence However, Jacob Zuma's uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party remains a dark horse in the debate, as it has not yet expressed its stance on the matter. Some analysts believe it could surprise everybody by voting in Ramaphosa's favour and, later, make demands to the ANC to accommodate it in the government of national unity (GNU), or strike a deal on Zuma's criminal charges. Political analyst Prof Dirk Kotzé said MK would usually vote against any DA proposal, which made it likely for them to side with Ramaphosa. At the same time, the party could abstain to avoid being associated with either side as they also had issues with Ramaphosa, said Kotzé. Is there room for persuasion? There were fears that if all the political parties voted to oust Ramaphosa, considering the top four parties could cooperate to push him out, the president would be out. However, pre-vote dealmaking was imminent, especially with traditional ANC-backing parties such as Al Jama-ah, Patriotic Alliance, United Democratic Movement, Pan Africanist Congress and others likely to support Ramaphosa's stay. But Malema cautioned some of these parties could be persuaded by their Israeli and big business funders to remove Ramaphosa. 'A worse situation for the DA' But Kotzé, who doubts the no-confidence motion could happen, said if it did, there was a chance of a 50-50% split to have Ramaphosa ousted. He said the ANC needed only 10% plus one to ensure Ramaphosa stayed in power. 'If the DA removed Ramaphosa, what is the option for them? It will be a worse situation for the DA if Ramaphosa is removed,' he said. The move is also seen as Malema's revenge against Ramaphosa, who excluded the EFF from the GNU. Malema said when the EFF and ANC vote percentages were tallied, along with those of pro-ANC smaller parties like Patriotic Alliance, ActionSA, and others, they would exceed 50%, which would ensure Ramaphosa was saved. Malema blames ANC arrogance for its decline He said the EFF warned the ANC in 2016, but the party never believed it. 'Now it's going to happen because the ANC had been arrogant. Even when it was humbled by the voters, it still acted in an arrogant manner. 'When [the ANC] are voting with us, they win. But when they don't vote with us, they lose. The decline started in 2016, when they lost the metros,' he said. 'It's going to happen again if they are not going to change their attitude. We are going to fold our arms and they will lose again.' Malema's large rock makes ripples in SA politics pool
Julius Malema says he will vote with the DA if it proposed a no-confidence motion against President Cyril Ramaphosa. Julius Malema is known for shouting his mouth off and for changing political course faster than you can say 'Breitling watch' – and maybe he was grandstanding yesterday – but perhaps he has also chucked a large rock into the stagnant pool of South African politics. The EFF leader said that, as things currently stand, his party would vote with the DA if it proposed a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly against President Cyril Ramaphosa. He went even further, saying: 'I want to warn you that this country will have a white president, this country will have Steenhuisen as a president if the ANC is behaving the way it is behaving.' Allowing for the fact the words may be political hot air, the intriguing possibilities which arise from his comments must be depressing for Ramaphosa's ANC. If, as ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula proposes, the DA would be kicked out of the government of national unity (GNU) for tabling the motion then, if the vote goes ahead, Ramaphosa might well not be in a position to say anything any longer as head of state. That is, of course, if Jacob Zuma's party joins the EFF and the DA in voting against Ramaphosa… because, as we all know, the ANC long since ceased having a majority in parliament. If Malema carries out his threat, then it would be MK which would be the decisive factor. And the delicious irony of that would not escape that party's leader, Jacob Zuma. He would be holding Ramaphosa's future in the palm of his hand. He could end it… or he could save him with a gesture which would be the ultimate in humiliation. Noise over substance: The ANC Youth League is being strangled by slogans
If the ANC Youth League does not rise to this challenge, it risks becoming irrelevant in the society it seeks to change. In recent years, South African politics has been increasingly defined by spectacle, slogans and populist posturing — often at the expense of rigorous intellectual debate and critical policy thinking. A wider crisis of thought that jeopardises the fundamental underpinnings of democratic engagement and transformation is reflected in the rise of anti-intellectualism, particularly among youth political movements such as the ANC Youth League. Anti-intellectualism is not simply a rejection of formal education. It is disdainful of critical thinking, academic inquiry and informed debate. It manifests in celebrating charisma over competence, loyalty over logic and noise over nuance. Within the league, this trend is becoming dangerously normalised. Once a breeding ground for ideological sharpness and future leaders of substance, the ANC Youth League too often rewards militant soundbites and performative radicalism while sidelining young thinkers who seek to ground their activism in theory, research and long-term strategy. The roots of this crisis are complex. Years of institutional decay in the ANC have eroded the culture of internal political education. Once-vibrant debate forums, political schools and intellectual mentorship are weak or absent. The post-apartheid period demanded robust frameworks for reconstruction and development. However, opportunists skilled at populist rhetoric, rather than policymaking, have gradually taken over the political arena. Anti-intellectualism flourishes in this setting. Using feelings rather than facts enables leaders to evade responsibility. It turns serious issues like unemployment, inequality and land reform into rhetorical battlegrounds rather than sites of rigorous intervention. The league, which once counted thinkers like Anton Lembede and Peter Mokaba among its leaders, now risks becoming a parody of its former self — more comfortable with empty slogans than building a coherent vision for youth empowerment in a rapidly changing world. Worse still, the anti-intellectual turn has created a generational rift. Young South Africans who challenge the status quo from within — those who demand better schools of political thought, progressive research and ethical leadership — are often labeled as 'elitist', 'sellouts' or 'not radical enough'. This creates a toxic environment where mediocrity is rewarded and intellectual ambition is punished. The damage is not contained within youth politics. It permeates the larger political conversation. Debates in parliament are frequently reduced to trivial showmanship. Policy documents are either disregarded, poorly researched or plagiarised. Hashtags and viral outrage, rather than thoughtful consideration, shape public engagement. This crisis of thought is a national problem, undermining our ability to govern effectively, hold leaders accountable and foster democratic participation rooted in knowledge. There are exceptions — young activists, scholars and leaders pushing back against this trend by combining political commitment with intellectual rigour. However, they are often isolated, unsupported and swimming against the tide. Without institutional support for intellectual development within political structures — especially the league — they will continue to be marginalised. First, the league must reclaim its intellectual tradition. This means reviving political education with urgency and integrity. Long-term programmes that examine history, ideology, economics and international movements are preferable to workshops that are merely check-box exercises. These initiatives must push young leaders to consider the intricacies of change in a post-colonial, capitalist society and to look beyond catchphrases. Second, political leadership must stop treating intellectualism as a threat. South Africa needs a leadership culture that values thinkers, readers and researchers as much as it does activists and organisers. The binary between theory and practice must be rejected in favour of a synthesis that produces clarity of vision and effectiveness in action. Third, civil society, universities and independent think-tanks must step into the void. If political parties fail to create space for young intellectuals, other institutions must offer platforms for engagement, critique and public education. Democracy does not survive on votes alone — it survives on the circulation of ideas, the contestation of narratives and the evolution of political thought. Finally, young people must resist the pressure to conform to anti-intellectual norms. They must read, write, question and debate — not in isolated academic silos, but in the streets, community halls and digital spaces where the political is lived. To think critically is not to be less revolutionary. On the contrary, it is the most revolutionary act in a society starved of meaningful ideas. Our political institutions are fragile. Our economy is stagnant. Our youths are restless. We cannot afford a political culture that glorifies ignorance and punishes insight. The crisis of thought is not abstract — it has material consequences. It means policies that fail. Leaders who mislead. Movements that collapse. If the ANC Youth League does not rise to this challenge, it risks becoming irrelevant in the society it seeks to change. Nevertheless, if members can reclaim the power of intellectualism — rooted in justice, truth and revolutionary theory — they can become the vanguard of a new political era, one defined not by noise but by substance.
