Jio's self-built 5G stack draws global attention

Time of India20 hours ago
A senior executive of
Reliance Industries
said the self-developed end-to-end 5G stack of
Reliance Jio
, the conglomerate's telecom arm, is gaining recognition globally and is a potential monetisable opportunity.
'It (Jio) is one of the leading deep tech companies in India with enormous amounts of innovation and technology development that we have done over the years,' Anshuman Thakur, senior vice president, Reliance Industries, said at the company's earnings call on Friday.

Reliance Jio is an unlisted subsidiary of Jio Platforms, which holds Reliance Industries' telecom and digital businesses.
'Today this technology, this tech stack, the entire value chain, the whole software, hardware stack is only available with us and has been deployed at scale,' Thakur said. 'All the global operators are looking at us to see how we have done this so successfully. And then a whole bunch of initiatives on AI.'
The latest addition to the telecom tech stack is the multi-point
UBR technology
for home connections, which global telcos have tried to replicate but failed, he said.
UBR enables multiple home connections through a single 5G cell site targeting 50%-60% homes within a micro-cluster using a single transmission tower, bringing down deployment costs.
'We are the first to deploy UBR for UBR-based connectivity at scale. This is a technology that operators worldwide have tried to work on and have not had much success,' he said.
UBR is the innovation child of
Mimosa Networks
, the US-based communications equipment maker which Jio Platforms acquired for $60 million through its wholly owned subsidiary Radisys Corporation in August 2023.
Majority of Jio's UBR equipment are manufactured by US-based Sanmina Corporation, which has a joint venture with Reliance Industries in India.
During the June quarter, Jio crossed the milestone of 20 million home connections, 7.4 million of which were AirFiber FWA (fixed wireless access) connections scaled with UBR tech. The telco now has 82% market share in 5G FWA connections in India.
Analysts are bullish on Jio's strong customer additions and cost benefits from technology ownership after Q1 and have raised Jio's enterprise valuation.
'Jio's 5G tech stack, core, software, hardware and BSS/OSS are all in-house and proprietary,' brokerage firm
IIFL Securities
said in a report. 'This enables quicker revenue ramp-up due to lower dependence of vendors, lower costs due to licence fee savings, customisation/scale-up of configuration based on requirements, and potential monetisation by selling to global telcos.'
IIFL has raised Jio's valuation to $134.2 billion (Rs11.2 lakh crore) from $133.9 billion it had said earlier.
Equity research firm Jefferies also raised its revenue estimates by 1-4% to factor in the changes to subscriber assumptions and lower access/network costs.
'We believe RJio remains well-placed to deliver 18%/22% CAGR in revenues/EBITDA over FY25-28, given rising tariffs in mobile and scaleup of
home broadband business
. We raise our EV (enterprise valuation) for Jio to US $146 billion (Rs 12.19 lakh crore) on the EBITDA upgrade and roll-over to Jun-27,' Jefferies said in a report.
Jio also holds the highest number of patents on 6G.
Jio Cloud
, launched last year, offering 100GB free cloud storage, now has 35 million consumers, Thakur said during the call.
On Monday, rival telecom operator
Bharti Airtel
's shares ended 0.4% higher on the BSE at Rs 1,908.75, giving it a market cap of more than Rs 10.88 lakh crore.

Paytm turns around with ₹122.5 cr net profit, 28% jump in revenue from ops

One97 Communications (OCL), the company which operates the Paytm brand, reported a turnaround with a consolidated profit of Rs 122.5 crore in the April-June quarter of financial year 2026 (Q1FY26), from a net loss of Rs 838.9 crore recorded in Q1FY25. Paytm had posted a net loss of Rs 539.8 crore in Q4FY25. While it was in Q2FY25 when Paytm had reported a profit, it was due to the sale of its ticketing business to Zomato. Q1FY26 marks the first-ever PAT-positive quarter for the company, driven by operational profit. The Noida-based fintech firm's revenue from operations grew 27.7 per cent to Rs 1,917.5 crore in Q1FY26, from Rs 1,501.6 crore in Q1FY25. Sequentially, revenue from operations remained stagnant compared to Rs 1,911.5 crore in Q4FY25. Paytm has been cutting down on its expenses in recent quarters, which has helped it turn profitable in Q1FY26. The company reported total expenses of Rs 2,016.1 crore in Q1FY26, an 18.6 per cent reduction from Rs 2,476.4 crore in Q1FY25. Total expenses were down 6.4 per cent from Rs 2,154.9 crore in Q4FY25. The company has slashed its marketing and promotional costs from Rs 221.4 crore in Q1FY25 to Rs 99.8 crore in Q1FY26, a 54.9 per cent cut on a year-on-year (YoY) basis. Sequentially, these costs were down 30 per cent from Rs 142.7 crore in Q4FY25. Segmental Revenue from Operations Paytm's revenue from payment services grew 18 per cent to Rs 1,044 crore in Q1FY26, from Rs 884 crore in Q1FY25, though it was slightly lower than Rs 1,046 crore in Q4FY25. The number of registered merchants with Paytm grew 11 per cent on a YoY basis to 45 million in Q1FY26 from 41 million in Q1FY25. Sequentially, this count grew 3 per cent from 44 million in Q4FY25. The company reported an all-time high of 13 million merchant subscriptions, including payment acceptance devices, in Q1FY26. This number has grown from 10.9 million in Q1FY25 and 12.4 million in Q4FY25. Revenue from the distribution of financial services doubled to Rs 561 crore in Q1FY26 from Rs 280 crore in Q1FY25. This marginally grew by 3 per cent from Rs 545 crore in Q4FY25. The company said a majority of its merchant loans were disbursed under a non-DLG (default loss guarantee) model, with more than 50 per cent of loans disbursed to repeat customers. A DLG model is a contractual arrangement between a fintech and a lender where the former guarantees to compensate the lender for losses arising from defaults by borrowers. A non-DLG model excludes such arrangements. However, the company expects slower sequential growth in revenue from the distribution of financial services compared to disbursement growth. It also expects a higher share of non-DLG disbursements in the future, which 'reduces upfront DLG costs and also lifetime revenue by the corresponding amount'. The company's cash balance at the end of Q1FY26 stood at Rs 12,872 crore, compared to Rs 8,108 crore at the end of Q1FY25 and Rs 12,809 crore at the end of March 2025. The increase in the cash balance can be attributed to the company's sale of its entertainment ticketing business in August 2024 to Zomato for Rs 2,048 crore and its sale of stock acquisition rights in Japan-based PayPay in December 2024 for Rs 2,364 crore. Employee Costs Paytm's indirect expenses stood at Rs 1,079 crore in Q1FY26, down 30 per cent from Rs 1,548 crore in Q1FY25. Sales employee costs grew 19 per cent to Rs 266 crore in Q1FY26 from Rs 224 crore in Q1FY25. The company said it is expanding into Tier II and III regions to increase monetisation. However, its non-sales employee costs declined 28 per cent to Rs 346 crore in Q1FY26 from Rs 482 crore in Q1FY25. The decline comes on the back of the firm utilising artificial intelligence (AI) to improve productivity. The Paytm stock hit a 42 month high and closed 3.37 per cent higher at Rs 1,052.60 on the BSE on Tuesday, ahead of the Q1 results that were announced post market hours. The stock, however, is still well below its November 2021 IPO price of Rs 2,150 per share

AAFA urges long-term AGOA renewal to boost US-Africa trade

Beth Hughes, vice president of trade and customs policy at the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), has delivered testimony before the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), highlighting the importance of renewing the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for calendar year 2026. Speaking at the annual review hearing (Docket Number USTR-2025-0012), Hughes stated that AGOA plays a pivotal role in driving US private-sector investment and employment across Africa and the United States. She shared testimonials from AAFA member companies, underscoring the impact of AGOA on business expansion and job creation. Hughes said that one member company recently inaugurated a new garment factory in Togo, employing over 250 local workers trained over the past eight months. The company plans to expand the workforce to 500, with finished goods shipped to a US-based warehouse that employs more than 100 Americans. Beth Hughes of AAFA has urged the USTR to renew AGOA for 2026, citing its critical role in boosting US investment and job creation in Africa and the US. She shared member success stories in Togo, Madagascar, Ghana, and Tanzania, and proposed enhancements like triennial reviews and improved customs systems. Hughes called AGOA a 'success story' and pushed for long-term renewal. She further noted that another US apparel company is preparing to construct a facility in Madagascar to relocate nearly 50 per cent of its production from China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. However, Hughes warned that this investment is entirely dependent on AGOA's renewal, as losing duty-free access would render the project unviable. In Ghana, a US company taking advantage of AGOA has become the country's largest private employer, with over 6,000 workers and plans to double that number by year-end. Much of the company's production has shifted from Asia to Ghana due to the cost competitiveness enabled by AGOA. Hughes also mentioned a long-standing AAFA member, founded in 1987, that has fully transitioned production from China to Madagascar and Tanzania since 2007. The company now employs over 10,000 workers—mostly women—and supplies 50 million garments annually to over 60,000 US small businesses, supporting around 3 million American jobs. She emphasised that AGOA's third-country fabric rule is vital, as it allows apparel manufacturers in lesser developed AGOA countries to source inputs from outside the continent while textile infrastructure in Africa is still being developed. At present, African suppliers provide only about 10 per cent of the cotton yarn and fabric used by local apparel manufacturers. To enhance AGOA's effectiveness and utilisation, Hughes said AAFA supports several targeted improvements. These include converting the annual eligibility review to a triennial cycle, allowing cumulation from African Union countries that have ratified the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and replacing outdated textile visa requirements with modern customs cooperation. She also recommended adjusting apparel quotas and revising the graduation criteria for AGOA beneficiaries. Calling AGOA a 'success story,' Hughes urged Congress and the Administration to renew the programme before the September 30 deadline and for the longest possible duration to provide certainty and encourage long-term investment. 'The time to act is now,' she said. 'AGOA has helped build a strong foundation for economic partnership, industrial growth, and mutual prosperity between the US and Africa. Let's not allow that progress to stall.' Fibre2Fashion News Desk (SG)
