Without Caitlin Clark, Fever were pushing Liberty. Then defending champs pushed them aside in 2nd half

BROOKLYN – The Indiana Fever officially squandered the season series to New York on Tuesday night, as a seven-point second-half lead turned into a 98-84 loss.
The Fever will finish the regular season 1-3 against the Liberty, giving New York precedence on any potential tiebreakers that could come later in the season. This loss pushes the Fever to 12-12 on the season, tied for sixth in the WNBA standings.
Kelsey Mitchell finished with a game-high 29 points, while Natasha Howard and Aliyah Boston each had 13. The Fever will return to Indianapolis to play Las Vegas on Thursday.
Caitlin Clark missed the game with a right groin injury. Her return date remains uncertain after visiting with doctors Tuesday.
Here are two observations:
For a while, Indiana was holding its own against the reigning champions. The Fever led by four at halftime, recording seven steals and forcing 11 turnovers in the first half. That lead got up to seven points late in the third quarter, and the Fever seemed to be in a rhythm.
Then, the Liberty found another gear.
New York went on a 29-8 run over 10 minutes between the third and fourth quarters, and the Fever went from leading, 67-60, to trailing by double digits, 89-75. Indiana also didn't make a basket in six minutes throughout that stretch, allowing the Liberty to quickly build on that lead.
Staying consistent in the second half is something the Fever have struggled with this season; they've had multiple games where they bring a significant lead into the third quarter, but fall apart in the second half. This, again, was one of those games.
Fever star Caitlin Clark missed her second straight game and 11th overall so far this season while recovering from her latest muscle injury.
Clark strained her right groin on July 15 against Connecticut, marking her fourth muscle injury of the season. She had to pull out of All-Star activities, including the 3-point contest and All-Star Game in Indianapolis, because of the injury.
Fever coach Stephanie White said Clark was meeting with doctors on Monday and Tuesday to get additional opinions on her injury. Clark made the trip to New York with the team for Tuesday's game. White didn't have an update on Clark's injury or a recovery timeline pregame, adding she met with a doctor Tuesday morning. The Fever did not specify if that doctor was in New York, saying they would not comment specifically on doctors visits.
Clark was still an active participant from the bench, talking during huddles and timeouts and standing on the sideline to watch at times. While on the bench, she sat on a blue cushion; Sophie Cunningham and Natasha Howard used those cushions at times, as well.

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge sidelined with 'elbow issue' as concern mounts: 'We'll see'

The New York Yankees have struggled lately. Friday's loss to the Philadelphia Phillies marked a second consecutive defeat and was the team's fourth loss in its last ten games. However, "The Bronx Bombers" concerns could mount as the team monitors the health of superstar Aaron Judge. The reigning American League MVP was scratched from Saturday's lineup due to what Yankees manager Aaron Boone described as an "elbow issue." "He's dealing with an elbow issue," Boone told reporters Saturday morning. Boone also noted that Judge experienced some difficulty when he threw the ball from the outfield during Friday's 12-5 loss to the Phillies. Judge was not pulled from the lineup in that game. The apparent discomfort did ultimately prompt an MRI. On Saturday morning, Boone said the team was still waiting for the imaging results. "Obviously, you guys asked about it in Toronto, but he felt like it was fine on the off day," Boone said. "Then, (Friday) night, he couldn't really throw well from the outfield, so he came in today and got imaging on that. Obviously it's a concern, but we'll wait and see." Judge went hitless on Friday, but did record an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Judge was listed as the Yankees designated hitter when New York played the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. He returned to his normal spot in right field on Friday as the Yankees opened a three-game series against the Phillies.

Aaron Judge out of Yankees' lineup Saturday due to elbow injury

Aaron Judge is not in the New York Yankees' Saturday lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies due to an "elbow issue," manager Aaron Boone said. According to Boone, Judge had an issue throwing the ball from the outfield during Friday's series opener. He was taken for imaging, and the team is currently awaiting the results. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Judge was seen wincing and gripping his right hand after a throw during Tuesday night's win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The follow day he did not play right field but served as designated hitter. Boone said the slugger was "OK." "It's not much," Boone said. "It's just probably a throw that didn't feel great. He's not DH'ing because of that. I think he's all right." This is the first game Judge has missed this season for the Yankees, who are 56-47 and sit 5 1/2 half games behind the Blue Jays for first place in the AL East. They are set to face left-hander Ranger Suárez and the Phillies on Saturday. The Yankees have dropped three of their last four games, including a 12-5 defeat Friday in the series opener. Judge is putting up another MVP-caliber season for the Yankees. Through 103 games, he leads the majors in hits (129), OPS (1.160) and batting average (.342) and is second in home runs (37) and RBI (85). While Judge will sit for Saturday's game, the Yankees will welcome third baseman Ryan McMahon to the lineup after he was acquired in a Friday trade with the Colorado Rockies. McMahon will bat ninth as the team hopes it's found a solution to a struggling left side of its infield. The Yankees finish their series with the Phillies on Sunday afternoon before welcoming the Tampa Bay Rays for a four-game set beginning Monday.
