Sticker shock: Some Jacksonville property owners are seeing the first sign of a big increase in solid waste. WOKV reported in February when city council gave preliminary approval to a solid waste bill that more than doubles the monthly rate. Supporters on city council say the current fee doesn't cover debt from its trash services, but some property owners say the burden is too high.
MANDARIN: It's a street lined with big, mature oak trees but Mandarin Road is narrow and doesn't have a complete sidewalk for people to use. Now, a debate in the neighborhood about a proposed JTA project. More than 600 people have signed a petition to stop the project. City Council members say they're pushing for the sidewalk project after a 2016 survey found it would be helpful. JTA is hosting a public meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Mandarin Community Club.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders to take first trip to Israel since her father became ambassador
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders is traveling next week on a trade mission to Israel, her first visit since her father Mike Huckabee was named U.S. ambassador there. Sanders, widely considered a potential Republican candidate for president in 2028, is also traveling to the United Arab Emirates on the trip, her office said. Sanders leaves Sunday and returns Aug. 9. The Senate in April confirmed Mike Huckabee, who served more than a decade as Arkansas governor, as the Trump administration's ambassador to Israel. This is Sanders' first trip to Israel since taking office as governor in 2023, though she has previously been. Sanders plans to meet with senior Israel government officials and is hosting roundtables with Israeli companies, focused on agricultural technology and defense. She also plans to connect with several companies that already have investments in Arkansas. She also plans to speak with companies in the UAE, focusing on aerospace and defense industries. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will hear arguments Thursday morning on the legality of President Trump's sweeping tariff agenda — one day before Trump's reciprocal taxes on a host of countries is set to go into effect. Under the Constitution, Congress is granted the power to impose import taxes on foreign trading partners. Lawmakers have argued that the president can't act unless he is granted that authority. Trump has leaned on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to justify his trade moves. Mass. Legislature strikes deal on ‘shield bill' to protect providers of abortion, gender-affirming care
The compromise bill beefs up a 2022 state law, and would restrict state agencies from sharing information with out-of-state investigations into people who sought care in Massachusetts or providers here. It also would require insurance companies in Massachusetts to limit access to patient electronic medical records, and require hospitals here to provide emergency abortions if medically necessary. Detractors say the bill would shield providers from accountability, while backers say it would further solidify Massachusetts' place as a haven for those seeking medical care that has come under attack by the Trump administration and Republican officials in other states. Advertisement Under the bill, doctors could use the title of their practice instead of their name on prescription orders. That would protect individual providers from being targeted by opponents of the mail-order medications, supporters said.
