Mbane urges focus as Banyana eye crucial WAFCON clash against Tanzania

Banyana Banyana stalwart defender Bambanani Mbane has cautioned her teammates against underestimating their next opponents, the Twiga Stars of Tanzania, in Friday's Women's Africa Cuo of Nations Group C fixture (kick-off 9pm).
In their opening group clash, Mbane spearheaded Banyana Banyana's WAFCON title defence on Monday with a 'Player of the Match' performance as the South Africans defeated Ghana 2-0 at Honneur Stadium in Oujda, Morocco.
When the teams return to the same venue on Friday, Banyana Banyana will be expected to overcome Tanzania, who are making only their second WAFCON appearance. However, Mbane has stressed that they cannot afford to undermine the Twiga Stars and has urged her teammates to approach the match with the same mentality they showed against Ghana.

Having experienced the fierce competition within African women's football, Mbane emphasised the importance of maintaining a winning mindset.
"We can't take Tanzania lightly," she insisted.
"They may be considered less fancied, but they have their strengths. We must approach this match with the same intensity and respect we had against Ghana."

The sweltering heat has posed an additional challenge, as Banyana Banyana adapt from South Africa's winter to Morocco's midsummer conditions, highlighted by their match against Ghana played in a scorching 34°C.
Nonetheless, Mbane praised the team's winning mentality.

Picture: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix A stoppage-time strike from Michelle Alozie broke Banyana Banyana's hearts on Tuesday and sent Nigeria in to the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. Alozie's long-range effort, that handed the Super Falcons a 2-1 win at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, was more of a cross, but bounced awkwardly in front of Andile Dlamini, the ball rolling into the back of the Banyana net. Banyana to play for third or fourth Desiree Ellis' Banyana will now contest the third/fourth place play off. Nigeria put Banyana under pressure from the start and a shot from Jennifer Echenigi went just wide of target, though the offside flag was up. Banyana goalkeeperDlamini then had to be alert to tip over a effort from Chinwendu Ihezuo. In the 11th minute, the Super Falcons wasted a great chance to go in front. Esther Okoronkwo broke clear of the Banyana defence and her effort was parried by Dlamini. The follow-up fell to Ihezuo but her header was brilliantly cleared off the line by Tiisetso Makhubela. Banyana were able to threaten the Nigerian defence on too few occasions. Jermaine Seoposenwe did have a chance after breaking into the Super Falcons penalty area, but her effort was easily stopped by Chiamaka Nniadoze. Banyana were dealt a blow in the 26th minute as Makhubela was forced off with an injury and Hildah Magaia cae on, Lebohang Ramalepe fired over the bar and Magaia sent an effort wide of target but it was Nigeria who took the lead on the stroke of half time. Folashade Ijamilusi's shot struck the arm of Bambanani Mbane and the referee pointed to the spot, which was confirmed after a VAR review. Nigeria captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up and scored the spot kick, even though Dlamini got a hand to it diving to her left. Dlamini almost made a disastrous error at the start of the second half as she dropped an innocuous cross, the ball heading into the back of the net until Fikile Magama hacked it away. Penalty for SA Magama's intervention paid dividends when Banyana were given a penalty as Magaia went down in the box after being pulled back by Osinachi Ohale. After a long VAR review, Linda Motlhalo took responsibility on the hour mark and fired home to level the scores. Banyana nearly went in front in the 73rd minute as a wonderful ball from Jermaine Seoposenwe found Noxolo Cesane inside the area. She beat Nniadoze but the effort had no pace on it and Ohale cleared off the line. Seoposenwe was increasingly involved in the match and she came close to scoring in the 78th minute, curling an effort just over the bar. Salgado shock injury There was real concern for Banyana's forward Gabriela Salgado towards the end of the 90 minutes. She went down with a serious-looking injury and had to be stretchered off the pitch, with some of her teammates in tears. This was Salgado's first start of the tournament, after injury had already seen her ruled out of Banyana's WAFCON triumph in 2022. And Banyana's hearts were soon to be shattered further.

Stranded soccer players and coaches on their way home thanks to local support
A radio personality and a church have helped to bring the junior players home after being left stranded in Europe by their academy. The 22 stranded junior South African soccer players in Lisbon, Portugal, along with three coaches, will be transported back to South Africa after fundraising and private sponsorship secured their imminent return. Radio personality Tracey Lange, through her Tracey Lange Cares initiative, raised the money to secure return flights for the 28 South Africans. The players were meant to return to South Africa but their soccer academy that sent them, BT Football Academy, failed to buy return-flight tickets, with CEO and founder Brandon Timmy excusing the price of the return flights at the time of purchase as the reason for the ordeal. BT Football Academy had two squads, an under-14 and under-19 team, taking part in the age-group Donosti Cup tournament in Spain, and flew a squad of 35 players and four coaches to the country. Only 10 players and one coach returned last week – after an additional R15,000 was paid by the parents of the young athletes, above the R50,000 initial payment for the trip, while the other 25 athletes and three coaches trekked to neighbouring Portugal by bus. 'We can confirm that we have managed to raise the funds to pay for all 28 flight tickets and with the assistance of TAAG [Airlines] have managed to secure seats on flights within the next few days,' Lange, who has been using her online platform to raise funds, said. 'Everyone will be home by the end of the week.' Church steps in The Christ Culture Church noted that it had covered nearly all the costs of the 28 stranded South Africans through Tracey Lange Cares. 'As the major sponsor, we covered approximately 95% of the total flight costs,' it said. 'At the time of payment, R54,000 had been received through public financial donations, and many more contributions – financial and in-kind – have continued to come in since. 'This is more than a rescue – it is a testimony of what can happen when a nation chooses unity over division, action over apathy, and love over fear.' According to its statement, TAAG Airlines reduced the cost of the flight, which had been the biggest hindrance in Timmy's failure to buy the return-flights.
