Brenton Avdulla snares Classic Cup on his way to brilliant treble: ‘it was hard to get a ride today'
He may have been restricted to just four rides but Brenton Avdulla put on a clinic at Sha Tin on Sunday, snaring the Classic Cup (1,800m) aboard Rubylot on his way to a running treble.
While Avdulla is one of the form jockeys on the Hong Kong roster after nine wins in February, he had to settle for a small book in the presence of superstar fly-in riders like Ryan Moore, Joao Moreira and James McDonald.
'It's always nice to win big races, especially with everyone flying in – it was hard to get a ride today,' said Avdulla after standing high in his irons and unleashing his trademark salute as the David Hayes-trained Rubylot snared the HK$13 million Classic Cup in swashbuckling style.
'I lost a lot of my rides today to fly-ins, so it's nice to get on the board with limited rides.
'I had four rides. I thought three of them were good, competitive rides and they're the three that have lobbed. They all had nice runs in transit [and] got the job done.'
While the jockey merry-go-round was in full swing ahead of the Classic Cup, Avdulla stuck fat with the galloper he partnered into sixth in the first leg of the four-year-old series, the Classic Mile.
'Hayesy had the horse spot on. He had a nice run through and I was confident at the 250m he was going to get the job done,' said Avdulla after adding a Classic Cup victory to a Hong Kong CV that includes two Group One wins aboard California Spangle.
'I've got no doubt if he drew a gate in the Mile he would have gone very close. I was just back in no man's land and he still ran on well, so I was confident enough to stick with him to come to 1,800m.

'I thought the draw was a little bit tricky again and ideally I would have been a bit closer but it just didn't look any good after 50m, so I just rode him quiet and my only decision was whether I go inside Mickley or around him,' added the Australian after Rubylot swept to victory down the outside after travelling at the back of the field from gate eight.
After Rubylot saw off My Wish by three-quarters of a length, Avdulla proceeded to bag the afternoon's second-richest contest – the Class Two Tai Hing Handicap (1,400m) – aboard Young Champion and the Class Three Yan Tin Handicap (2,000m) atop Enthralled, both for John Size.
The win of Young Champion would have been a relief for the Jockey Club's Racing Club after its banner horse entered the season with big wraps but had failed to deliver until Sunday.
While there will be stamina concerns around many of the four-year-olds who line-up in the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) on March 23, it's not the trip that is the issue for Enthralled, who will move to a rating in the low 70s after Sunday's win.
Tidy win, Young Champion! 👊

Size labelled trying to get the galloper into the Derby 'a futile exercise' – the lowest-rated runner in the Classic Cup was Sky Trust on 79 – but Avdulla knows the son of American Pharoah can make an impact if he does get there.
'I actually said to John after I first rode him that if you had another two months up your sleeve, he'd be one of the live chances in the Derby,' said Avdulla after Enthralled broke through in Hong Kong at start three.
'He's had to get him there quickly. It's not often you see John give them only a couple of trials and then run them in a mile.
What a ride, @brentonavdulla! 🙌

'I think he's a good quality horse and if he makes his way into the Derby field, he'll be a live hope for sure.'
Size's double moved him to 34 victories for the season and he sits just one victory behind championship leader Hayes, while Avdulla surged to third in the jockeys' premiership on 29 wins.
Of the six big-name jockeys in town for the afternoon, McDonald was the best performed with a double aboard Lucky Fionn and Fast Network, while Blake Shinn tasted success with Ballistic Win.

Master trainer Aidan O'Brien holds aces in France and Germany's simulcast Group Ones on Sunday
Aidan O'Brien is one again one of the main players in a European Group One. Photo: Kenneth Chan Aidan O'Brien is hunting down his third Group One Prix Rothschild (1,600m) at Deauville on Sunday and looks to hold the aces with his progressive three-year-old January. The top trainer is a force wherever he sends runners in Europe and January, who has been threatening to break her Group One duck, will be ridden by French ace Christophe Soumillon. She has shown improved form this season, building on a modest reappearance by finishing second in the Group One Coronation Stakes (1,600m) at Royal Ascot before filling the same position in the Group One Falmouth Stakes (1,600m) at Newmarket. Like many of O'Brien's horses, she has improved steadily with age and experience, and O'Brien is hoping for further progress. 🔵 Cinderella's Dream - back in business with @Tattersalls1766 Falmouth Stakes glory — Racing TV (@RacingTV) July 11, 2025 'A mile is really her trip. We're getting closer step by step. It's always a little frustrating to come so close, but she ran very well. She's improving, and we're on the right path,' said O'Brien after her Falmouth run. The French challenge is a strong one too, with the now Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Matilda leading the charge under Maxime Guyon. She was previously trained by Yasmin Almenrader in Germany and was building into a really smart operator, most recently winning the Group Two German 2,000 Guineas at Cologne against the boys by six and a half lengths. The Graffard team also runs Mandanaba, who was last seen finishing second in the Group One Prix de Diane (2,000m) and is set to be suited by the drop back to the mile. 'Even though we're keen to try her over 2,000 metres, we know that on softer ground, she has enough speed to run very well over the mile,' Burke said. There is also simulcast action in Germany from Düsseldorf, with the feature being the Group One Preis der Diana (2,200m). O'Brien once again has a big chance with the improving Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes (2,400m) winner Garden Of Eden, though she has drawn wide under Ryan Moore. Other big chances include the Charlie Appleby-trained Spirited Style, a Listed winner last time out, and the home team's Lady Charlotte, who was unbeaten before her fair run in the Group One Deutsches Derby (2,400m) last month.

Whirl powers through Goodwood thunderstorm to ease away with the Nassau Stakes
Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien teamed up for more Group One glory. Photo: Reuters Aidan O'Brien's rising star made light work of difficult conditions on the third day of the elite festival Whirl made quick work of torrential conditions at Glorious Goodwood to win the Group One Nassau Stakes (2,000m) in impressive fashion on Wednesday. Biblical rain, thanks to a heavy thunderstorm, saw racegoers cowering indoors before the race, and the Nassau itself was delayed for 10 minutes with lightning in the area. None of that – including a flag start due to safety concerns – fazed Aidan O'Brien's $1.7 favourite, who went straight to the lead under Ryan Moore and was never seriously challenged. A filly ON A ROLL 🟦🟧 𝑾𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒍 bags a second Group 1 as she runs away with the @Qatar_Racing Nassau Stakes.@WorldPool | @Goodwood_Races — Racing TV (@RacingTV) July 31, 2025 Moore bagged the coveted stand's rail as he led the field into the straight and powered through the mud to record back-to-back Group One wins, leaving Cercene trailing five lengths behind in second for trainer Joseph Murphy. The race was billed as a clash between Whirl and the Andrew Balding-trained See The Fire, but that battle never materialised after the latter blew the flag start and could only finish third. 'She's understated – that's just her nature. She's been coming along in the shadows and nothing seems to bother her,' O'Brien told Racing Post. 'She's hardy and keeps turning up. She's pretty unusual and has an unbelievable mind. She didn't even know she'd had a race.' Clive Cox's debut winner ran a brilliant race to finish third in the Group Two Coventry Stakes (1,400m) at Royal Ascot and took another step forward to record a facile all-the-way two-length success up the stand's rail. 'I was worried about soft ground because he's got such a beautiful action on a nice surface. He's very quick and did that really well,' Cox told Racing TV. 'I think he's very gifted and he's a proper six-furlong horse so usual plans from here, Middle Park will be the end goal.'

Spurs beat Arsenal in Kai Tak north London derby
Spurs beat Arsenal in Kai Tak north London derby Spurs claimed the Herbalgy Trophy with their win over Arsenal in their friendly at Kai Tak Stadium. Photo courtesy of the Hong Kong Football Festival Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur delivered a slice of football history on Thursday by staging the first North London derby outside the United Kingdom as nearly 50,000 fans packed Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium for a pre-season friendly. The mouth-watering clash proved so popular that around 20,000 people turned up just to watch the two teams train, underlining the rarity of Premier League local rivals facing off in pre-season friendlies. Despite tickets costing as much as HK$2,499, fans considered the historic occasion worth every penny as the North London rivalry finally crossed continents. "I'm extremely excited. Firstly, watching Arsenal, it's my second time. I was excited then, I'm still excited now, but this is the North London Derby," said Khalid Saleh, a 33-year-old Arsenal fan from Perth. "This is the one game where we're very nervous ... It's probably a childhood dream, man, to come watch a North London derby." The match ended 1-0 to Spurs with their Senegal midfielder Pape Matar Sarr scoring the winner late in the first half with a spectacular strike from near the centre circle after he spotted goalkeeper David Raya off his line. For many Arsenal fans, the main attraction was watching their 76 million euros (US$86.72 million) Sweden striker Viktor Gyokeres making his debut, part of the club's close-season spending spree approaching 200 million pounds (US$263.94 million). Wearing the iconic number 14 shirt, Gyokeres came on as a late substitute, welcomed onto the pitch with a huge roar that echoed around the stadium, which had its roof closed. "We just signed a new striker, probably the first (specialist) striker we signed since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang," said Mo Muse, an Arsenal fan from Melbourne. "We're feeling super, super confident, obviously. Probably one of the best transfer windows." Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said he was 'amazed' by the support, thanking them for their patience after Arsenal returned to Hong Kong for the first time since 2012. "It just makes you feel how wonderful and big this football club is and how lucky we are to have the support with the level of intensity as well that people love our football club here, so it was great to witness," Arteta said. Spurs supporters, meanwhile, were eager to see their captain Son Heung-min, with many fearing it could be their last chance to watch the 33-year-old South Korea forward in the club's colours amid transfer speculation. "Sonny has stayed for a decade in Tottenham," said Spurs fan Patrick Lau, who held a placard with pictures of the talismanic forward. "No matter whether Sonny decides to stay or maybe move to the next chapter, we are so glad that Son has stayed for Tottenham for a decade. He is our legend forever!" Simba, a Spurs fan from Hangzhou, said he bought tickets for the match mainly to watch Son, who also came on as a substitute. "I came because Son Heung-min might leave the team," he said. "I hope to see him a few more times and watch him one last time, as he's my favourite player." (Reuters)
