Proposed Kolkata-Northeast Link To Pass Via Sea, Giving Bangladesh A Miss
The Shillong-Silchar highway project will extend a key transport route in Myanmar, offering an alternative sea link between North-East states and Kolkata.
In a significant development, the proposed highway project linking Meghalaya's Shillong and Assam's Silchar will become an extension of a key multi-modal transport project in Myanmar. The proposed road project will also lead to an alternative link via sea between the North-East states and Kolkata, reported The Indian Express while quoting an National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) official.
The project is being described as a response to Bangladesh interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus's remark in Beijing this March that North-East India is 'landlocked" and Dhaka is the 'only guardian of the ocean for all this region". Yunus made the remarks while seeking 'extension of the Chinese economy".
A few days later, on April 4, Yunus met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. The Ministry of External Affairs had said that PM Modi told Yunus that 'rhetoric that vitiates the environment is best avoided".
166.8-km Proposed Highway
The proposed four-lane highway will span across 166.8-km along NH-6 from Mawlyngkhung near Shillong to Panchgram near Silchar. It is being implemented by NHIDCL for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). It will be first high-speed corridor project in the North-East and is expected to be completed by 2030.
Meanwhile, the Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project in Myanmar is being funded by the Ministry of External Affairs — and links the Kolkata seaport to the Sittwe port on the Kaladan river in Rakhine state.
Further, the Sittwe port connects to Paletwa in Myanmar through an inland waterway and to Zorinpui in Mizoram through a road section.
However, Bangladesh has restricted access via Bay of Bengal while maintaining its stronghold on movement through water in the region. Hence, the Kaladan project was jointly identified by India and Myanmar as an alternative — the link is expected to be fully operational by the time the Shillong-Silchar highway is completed.
The construction of the Shillong-Sichar highway will involve major engineering work, including slope stabilisation to predict landslides, as the alignment traverses through difficult hilly terrain.
Further, the Centre approved the project at a cost of Rs 22,864 crore on April 30. Of the total 166.8-km project, 144.8 km lies in Meghalaya while Assam will get 22 km in its share. Once operational, the highway will reduce the travel time from 8.30 hours to just 5 hours.

Several Pakistani Accounts Blocked During Op Sindoor Reinstated After Govt Review: Sources
Last Updated: Restrictions were imposed earlier this year during India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror campaign. Some Pakistani news websites and social media accounts of Pakistani celebrities which were banned during India's counter-terror operation Operation Sindoor have resurfaced on social media. It is unclear if those restrictions have been lifted or not as there is no official announcement lifting the ban by the government. However, government sources speaking to News18 said that 'following a periodic review, some social media accounts have been reinstated" but majority of the handles remain blocked. The government sources pointed out that some '14,000 accounts on some social still remain banned". They further added: 'Upon the review, it has been observed that some of these platforms which have been reinstated have not spoken anti India language for a while, which was the main reason for blocking them". The sources said: 'Accounts cannot be permanently banned and are subject to regular reviews as part of the standard process". The ban, part of India's Operation Sindoor counter-terror effort, targeted major Pakistani media outlets including Dawn News, Geo News, ARY News, Bol News, Samaa TV, GNN, Suno News HD and The Pakistan Reference, among others. Together, these channels accounted for an estimated 63 million subscribers. The crackdown also extended to sports and entertainment channels such as Samaa Sports, Uzair Cricket and Hum TV, as well as individual journalists and content creators. Pakistan public and sports-related personalities whose accounts faced ban included Umar Cheema, Asma Shirazi, Muneeb Farooq, Irshad Bhatti, Razi Naama, Wasay Habib, Arzoo Kazmi, Syed Muzammil Shah and former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. Several of them also faced restrictions on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), as the ban widened in early May 2025. The restrictions were imposed amid cross-border information warfare and attempts by these Pakistani social media cells to manipulate Indian public sentiment. A notable example of Pakistani cricketers and celebs spreading misinformation was that of Shahid Afridi, who criticised the people of India and the Indian Army. In early May 2025, Shahid Afridi's YouTube channel was one of the Pakistani platforms blocked in India. Over the past five years, MOAMC has delivered a robust 34% CAGR in AUM, rising from Rs 35,180 crores in June 2020. Tejashwi Yadav makes 15 promises to disabled community ahead of Bihar polls
Patna: Bihar Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday made 15 major poll announcements for the disabled community during a program held at Patna's Bapu auditorium. Tejashwi promised that if his government comes to power in Bihar, a separate commission and department for disabled people will be formed. He said that the disability certificate process will be simplified to ensure easier access to government benefits, and disabled individuals will receive a pension of Rs 1500 per month, increasing by Rs 200 annually, reaching Rs 2500 in five years. He also promised that schools would be established in every district and reserved beds in government hospitals. Tejashwi also announced reservations for disabled people in Panchayat elections, a separate stadium for disabled players to facilitate their sports training, government jobs for disabled sportspersons, 5 per cent reservation in housing schemes, helping disabled individuals secure their own homes, free smartphones, speakers, and essential devices for the visually impaired. Tejashwi Yadav also criticised the Bihar government, alleging it is not serious about the rights of disabled people, and positioned these promises as a commitment to social justice and inclusive development under a potential RJD-led government. According to the 2011 Census, India has 2.68 crore disabled individuals, which is 2.21 per cent of the population. Bihar, after UP and Maharashtra, has the third-highest disabled population in the country, with 8.69 per cent of the state's population. The disabled population in Bihar is 10.98 per cent in rural areas and 3.48 per cent in urban areas.
