UMNO Wants Full Ministerial Quota After Tengku Zafrul's Exit, Says Ahmad Zahid
SERIAN, May 31 (Bernama) -- UMNO is seeking to retain its full allocation of seven ministerial positions in the Federal Cabinet following the resignation of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz from the party, its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, expressed confidence that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would consider reinstating the allocation in line with UMNO's role in the unity government.
'To me, what's more important is that UMNO remains represented by seven full ministers in the Cabinet. Although we are unsure whether Tengku Zafrul's appointment was on UMNO's ticket, we had assumed he represented the party.
'Now that he is no longer with UMNO, the number drops to six. So, it is only fair for UMNO to request that the seat be returned to us,' he told reporters after attending the Sarawak RISDA 2025 'Makmur' Smallholders programme and pre-Gawai celebration here today.
Ahmad Zahid also confirmed that the party has received Tengku Zafrul's resignation letter, which was submitted to UMNO Executive Secretary Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan.
'Yesterday, when we checked, it had not been received. But this morning, we verified that the letter had been delivered to Mohd Sumali. We acknowledge his resignation and withdrawal of membership from UMNO,' he said.
Tengku Zafrul, who is Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, had yesterday announced his resignation from UMNO, including from his posts as Supreme Council member and Kota Raja division chief.
He also disclosed his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), having informed PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Dr Fuziah Salleh.
Ahmad Zahid said UMNO's legal team will review whether Tengku Zafrul has breached the agreement signed during the 15th General Election (GE15), which binds candidates to the party.

Anwar also took time to speak with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to congratulate him on the Liberal Party's recent electoral victory. 'I look forward to working closely with Prime Minister Carney and his new administration to strengthen the longstanding Malaysia-Canada partnership for the mutual benefit of our peoples,' he said. Malaysia, he added, remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Canada across various sectors, including trade, investment and defence cooperation. 'I'm pleased with PETRONAS' continued involvement in the LNG Canada project, as it clearly symbolises strong cooperation in the energy sector,' he said. He called on Canada to reconsider visa exemptions for Malaysians, noting that both countries are Commonwealth members.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he knew that the trend towards decarbonisation is strong and compelling. "But I think we have to be very realistic. The proposed carbon tax should not be seen as too problematic at the expense of investing companies,' he said during a question and answer session at the Roundtable Meeting with Captains of Industry in Paris, the capital of France on Friday. Also present were Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Anwar, who is here on a two-day official visit, said the implementation has to be done cautiously and gradually. "We are finalising that in the next few months actually,' he said, adding that they are looking at sectors that are the biggest carbon emitters first. Despite the palm oil industry being an important sector for Malaysia, Anwar said any new plantations on peat soil have been stopped due to its high carbon emissions. The government is planning to introduce the carbon tax in 2026, specifically targeting the iron, steel and energy industries. It is part of the government's broader strategy to promote the use of low-carbon technologies and meet emission reduction goals. Industry leaders who attended the session with the Prime Minister praised the government and the country for providing a good investment climate in Malaysia. On tourism, Anwar said the number of tourists from France visiting Malaysia has increased tremendously. "We have direct flights from Paris now. You can swim the whole year due to our favourable climate,' he quipped, citing the newly introduced Kuala Lumpur-Paris route by Malaysia Airlines. Zahid hailed as Umno's saviour by Marang division
MARANG: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has been recognised as the 'bapa penyelamat' (saviour) of Umno. The recognition was announced by Terengganu Umno deputy chairman Datuk Nik Dir Nik Wan Ku during the opening ceremony of the Marang Umno Wanita division delegates' meeting this evening. Nik Dir, who is also Marang Umno division chief, said the recognition was given to Zahid, who is also the Bagan Datuk member of parliament, for defending the party despite calls for its dissolution following its poor performance in the 15th general election (GE15). He said Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister, stood firm in not dissolving Umno even while facing 87 court charges, and despite claims that the party had no future and could not be trusted. "Ahmad Zahid, who had to attend court hearings over 87 charges of corruption, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering, showed extraordinary spirit and remained resolute in his decision not to dissolve Umno. "The Marang division party committee has thus decided to recognise Ahmad Zahid as 'bapa penyelamat' of Umno," he said during the meeting at Dewan Perkasa, Asrama Darul Falah, Bukit Payong. The Marang Umno Wanita delegates' meeting was launched by Umno Wanita Movement executive council member Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid. Also present was Marang Umno Wanita chief Zaiton Mat Amin. Nik Dir said Ahmad Zahid was seen as "unyielding" and highly spirited, ignoring all pressure despite Umno winning only 24 parliamentary seats in GE15. He said Umno leaders nationwide were at the time concerned that Ahmad Zahid might bow to pressure and agree to dissolve the party. "Umno Marang division hereby officially recognises Ahmad Zahid as the saviour of the party," he said, drawing cheers of "Hidup Ahmad Zahid" and "Hidup Umno" from about 700 delegates.
