GapStudio launches summer drop with Lila Moss campaign

Fashion Network24-06-2025
Gap 's latest GapStudio drop arrives in-store this week with made-for-summer styles featuring lightweight denim being fronted in a campaign starring British model Lila Moss.
Designed by Zac Posen, EVP & Creative Director of Gap, there's a big spotlight on the brand's all-new draped denim, that we're told has 'a liquid-soft hand feel and breezy lightness that offers an easy, effortless flow'. It also has a 'sun-faded finish' for a ' lived-in look' and design details like let-down hems that reveal tonal contrast.
Denim isn't the only focus, of course, as the drop is also built around chambray and voile that add to the feeling of lightness.
Posen said: 'It's about the sensation of that first walk along the ocean in jeans. We wanted fabrics that are soft, light, breezy — capturing the feeling of summer, while honouring the heritage of Gap.'
Key pieces include denim baggy jeans, a draped denim playsuit, denim crop shirts and voile separates 'that blur the line between beach cover-up and streetwear', and crepe dresses in an 'abstract, smile-inducing print'. Plus there's a voile and draped denim shirt dress that the brand also calls a 'Gaptan' that 'offers ethereal lightness with an elevated wash and drape'.

Kneecap controversy hits French music festival as funding withdrawn

It's one of France's biggest and most popular music festivals, held every year at the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud, west of Paris, in August. Rock en Seine attracts more than 150,000 spectators each year, and while this year's edition features massive headliners like Chappell Roan, Fontaines D.C., Queens of the Stone Age and Doechii, one headliner is already proving controversial. Rap trio Kneecap has been kept on the line-up of this year's edition, taking place from 20 – 24 August, and it has cost the festival. Indeed, Rock en Seine has suddenly seen its budget cut by €40,000 - a decision taken by the Saint-Cloud town council over the presence of the Northern Irish band. Scheduled for Sunday 24 August, the Kneecap are known for their vocal support for the Palestinian cause and has been targeted by the British justice system over what the band refered to as a 'trumped up terrorism charge'. One of the band's members, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, is accused of displaying a flag in support of proscribed organisation Hezbollah at a London gig last year. He was released on unconditional bail after last month's hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London. Their controversial Glastonbury set, alongside Bob Vylan's, has escalated matters in the UK. Mayor of Saint-Cloud Éric Berdoati voted to withdraw the subsidy, saying: "We subsidise cultural initiatives, not political ones. When it's no longer in line with our objectives, we don't fund it.' Regardless, Rock en Seine has decided to not be intimidated by any political pressure and has maintained the Kneecap concert. 'When we programmed them last autumn, they weren't the talk of the town, except for good reasons,' says festival director Mathieu Ducos, who insists on maintaining good relations with the town of Saint-Cloud. 'I hope that the history we've managed to build and weave together doesn't end with this dispute and the vision we have of this group,' Ducos adds. The €40,000 from Saint-Cloud should not dent the budget too much, as Rock en Seine's budget this year has been announced at around €17 million - 3% of which comes from subsidies. The cut, a first for the festival since its inception in 2003, comes after Valérie Pécresse, President of the Île-de-France region, said on X in May that Kneecap 'should be withdrawn from current French music festivals' because of the legal proceedings under way in the UK. Conversely, French politician Xavier Brunschvicg (Parti Radcal de Gauche) said that Kneecap's actions and speeches were mainly because the Northern Irish group was 'taking a stand against what is happening in Gaza'. In his view, Éric Berdoati was 'giving in to a social demand from his most conservative constituency.' Several artists have supported Kneecap, including Brian Eno, Fontaines D.C. and Pulp. They signed an open letter criticizing a 'clear, concerted attempt to censor and ultimately deplatform' Kneecap and opposing 'political repression of artistic freedom.' The letter reads: "As artists, we feel the need to register our opposition to any political repression of artistic freedom.' "In a democracy, no political figures or political parties should have the right to dictate who does and does not play at music festivals or gigs that will be enjoyed by thousands of people." Rock en Seine takes place at Domaine National de Saint-Cloud from 20 – 24 August 2025.

Original Birkin bag sells for record £7.4 million at Paris auction

The original bag custom-made for actress Jane Birkin — which went on to inspire one of the most iconic accessories in modern fashion history — was sold for a record €8.6 million (£7.4 million) at a Sotheby's auction in Paris on Thursday. According to fashion lore, the first Birkin bag was created after the Franco-British actress and singer sat beside Hermès executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight in 1984 and mentioned she needed a bag that was both elegant and functional for her life as a young mother. Dumas reportedly sketched the concept mid-flight, designing a rectangular handbag with space specifically for baby bottles. Hermès produced that prototype for Birkin, later releasing smaller versions to the public. The now-legendary design quickly gained popularity and became a cornerstone of the brand's identity and commercial success. Standard Birkin bags today retail for over £8,000, but this original — which features Birkin's 'J.B.' initials on the flap and a non-detachable shoulder strap, unlike later versions — was sold by phone to a private buyer in Japan, according to Sotheby's. The final bid set a new record for the most expensive fashion item ever sold at auction. 'It was a travel bag. Clearly, it was worn for nine years by Jane Birkin on a daily basis, and the form is still very beautiful,' said Aurélie Vassy, head of the Handbags and Fashion Department at Sotheby's Europe and Middle East, in an interview with Reuters. Birkin originally auctioned the bag in 1994 to raise funds for Sidaction, a French charity supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS. It changed hands again in 2000, when a private French collector purchased it. When Jane Birkin passed away in 2023, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo called her the 'most Parisian of the English,' a tribute to her deep connection with the French capital. Born in the United Kingdom, Birkin moved to France in the late 1960s and became known not just for her work in film and music — particularly the provocative hit 'Je t'aime… moi non plus' — but also for her activism and humanitarian contributions.
