India's first ‘digital arrest' fraud conviction: Bengal court finds 9 guilty in Rs 1 cr scam

The Kalyani sub-divisional court has found all nine members, four from Maharashtra, three from Haryana and two from Gujarat, guilty of duping a retired agricultural scientist of nearly Rs 1 crore read more Nine members of a criminal gang have been convicted in a 'digital arrest' fraud case by a sub-divisional court in West Bengal's Kalyani, making it the first such conviction in India. The Kalyani sub-divisional court has found all nine members, four from Maharashtra, three from Haryana and two from Gujarat, guilty of duping a retired agricultural scientist of nearly Rs 1 crore. The gang members have been charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Additional SP (Headquarters) of Ranaghat Police District, Siddharth Dhapola, stated that the cyber fraud investigation stems from a 2024 complaint filed by a victim who alleged he was cheated out of Rs 1 crore through a 'digital arrest' scam. The arrests were made after an official complaint was filed, following which the police launched a month-long investigation. Cyber crime units from Maharashtra, Haryana, Gujarat, and Rajasthan apprehended 13 people, including a woman, last year. 'The accused were arrested from multiple states. The in-custody trial (none was granted bail) of the accused began on February 24. This is nothing short of economic terrorism as the money flowed out of the country,' Dhapola said. The victim and the complainant, Partha Kumar Mukhopadhyay, reported receiving a call on October 19, 2024, from an individual identifying himself as SI Hemraj Koli of Andheri Police Station, Mumbai. Using a WhatsApp number, the caller threatened him with a 'digital arrest' and coerced him into transferring Rs 1 crore to multiple bank accounts. These accounts were later found to be flagged by the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal for being used in scams that have duped more than 108 victims. 'The calls were made from Cambodia but the WhatsApp number was linked to a SIM from a private company in India. Priam facie, it appeared fraudsters in Cambodia were committing crimes in India but their fluency in Bengali and Hindi was the first red flag,' an official told Times of India.

Archana Puran Singh's son sulks as dad Parmeet Sethi gets him credit card with ‘super low' limit, actress is horrified to see showpiece with Rs 2 lakh tag

Archana Puran Singh is currently holidaying in Dubai with her family, soaking in the sights, food, and laughter. On their final day, the family decided to indulge in a South Indian culinary treat at one of the city's most iconic restaurants, followed by a lively shopping spree at the Dubai Mall. While waiting for their dosa to arrive, Archana shared a delightful memory from a family trip to Singapore when her sons, Aryamann and Ayushmaan, were still young. She recalled with a smile, 'Both Aryamann and Ayushmaan were little at the time. We were in Singapore and had walked into a toy store. Ayushmaan, who was really tiny back then, grabbed a shopping cart and started picking up every doll he could reach. He just kept tossing toys into the cart — sometimes two or three of the same kind! I told him, 'Ayushmaan, you can't take so many toys. We have to pay for all this. Mumma doesn't have that much money.' He stopped and I thought he would put the toys back. But instead, he looked at me and said, 'Mumma, you don't need money. You have a card!' I couldn't stop laughing. How do you explain to a child that a credit card actually requires more money?' Aryamann chimed in, 'From that day till now, he still believes, 'Mumma has a card, so there's no problem.'' His father Parmeet Sethi, added playfully, 'Unfortunately, now he's finally getting a card of his own.' A mildly disappointed Ayushmaan replied, 'But the limit is super low.' To which Parmeet quipped, 'I did that on purpose.' While browsing one of the stores, Ayushmaan spotted an elegant Indian showpiece and excitedly called out, 'Mom, this is Indian!' Curious, he checked the price tag and said, 'Wow, it's Rs 70,000!' Archana's eyes widened as she exclaimed, 'My God! An Indian item is this expensive here?' A moment later, Ayushmaan paused, went back to check again, and corrected himself, 'Oops, I misread it. It's not RS 70,000. It's almost Rs 2 lakh!' At that, Archana turned and dramatically walked away, saying, 'Main door jaa rahi hoon (I'm going far away).' She laughed and added, 'Seriously, some of these prices are just too expensive!'
