PHA Urges Vigilance Over Misuse Of Subsidised Cooking Oil In Hindu Rituals
In a statement, PHA president Datuk P.Murugiah alleged that most of the oil used in Hindu praying rituals and temples is actually diverted from subsidised stock that are meant for low-income households and being misused for religious purposes.
"We found out that most of the 'prayer oil' sold in the state, especially in temple supply stores—was actually repackaged subsidised cooking oil. Originally priced at RM2.50 per kilogramme (kg) in the open market, it now fetches up to RM8.20 per litre in the form of ritual-use oil.
"In a recent price survey carried out by PHA, a particular prayer oil brand is listed at RM8.20 per litre, which is a mind-blowing 228 per cent profit from the actual subsidised price and some brands of prayer oild cost even more," he said in statement today.
He said this practice ,if left unchecked , will defeat the purpose of the subsidy meant for the B40 group but when this oil is rerouted into religious retail at such inflated prices, the benefit is lost—and someone else pockets the profit.
Murugiah said the issue is not a new problem and just two years ago in 2023, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) caught a trader repackaging subsidised cooking oil in different bottles and selling them as prayer oil at high prices.
He said some suppliers would even resort to using colour dyes for the oils in order to distract the authorities and PHA has now called on KPDN to tighten its enforcement and conduct frequent spot checks at retail outlets, especially those selling religious paraphernalia.
'We urge the Ministry to compel prayer oil traders to declare the source of their products and list the retail price clearly on the packaging.This is in line with labelling laws and will ensure consumers are not misled," he said.
He said the association also supports a full nationwide rollout of the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme System (eCOSS), which is designed to track the supply of subsidised oil from refinery to retail.

He emphasised capacity-building in cruise operations and hospitality, especially targeting youth and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and called for stronger coordination through the Asean Task Force on Tourism and Transport. Sustainability was also a key theme, with calls to protect marine ecosystems, improve climate resilience, and harness digital platforms to enhance passenger experiences and operational coordination. "These areas of cooperation reflect the potential for Asean and India to lead in sustainable and inclusive cruise tourism,' Kao said, noting India's US$5 million contribution to the Asean-India Fund as a vital support mechanism. With over 40 cruise destinations in Asean and major port upgrades underway, he said the sector is emerging as a strategic growth area. The dialogue was held as part of the Asean-India Year of Tourism aimed at strengthening tourism ties between the two regions. Travel between Asean and India has been growing, with about 5.88 million Indian tourists visiting Asean last year and 660,000 visitors from Asean countries travelling to India, Kao added. - Bernama

The youth wing's chief, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden argued that such a project represents a misplaced priority at a time when Malaysia is grappling with subsidy reductions and a worsening fiscal deficit. He highlighted concerns that the project, despite an estimated cost of RM4 billion, could incur a substantially higher financial burden if funded through a private finance initiative (PFI). The PFI model, he noted, has historically drawn criticism for potentially masking a government's true debt obligations in official records. Afnan called on the administration to disclose the precise cost of the project, including annual commitments stretching over the next 20 to 25 years. "What tangible benefits can the people expect, especially the younger generation who will inherit the weight of this debt? "Why is such a extravagant project being prioritised when funding for education, healthcare, food security and social welfare continues to diminish?" Afnan questioned in a statement today. The Alor Setar MP also raised objections to the involvement of Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Petronas, as the project's primary driver. He pointed out that this comes at a time when the national oil and gas corporation faces declining profits, workforce reductions and increasing investment pressures across various sectors. "The government should be safeguarding Petronas, not transforming the company into a 'political ATM' to finance elitist projects that do not offer equitable commercial returns," Afnan added. Calling for an immediate halt to the Putrajaya government quarters project, Afnan demanded that a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis be presented in Parliament. "If the government insists on proceeding, it will become evident that the true purpose behind Kota Madani is not national advancement, but rather the pursuit of political ambition and the legacy of a particular individual," he concluded. On June 26, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched the Kota Madani project, conceived as a smart city initiative designed to be people-centric and environmentally sustainable. Reports indicate the project will operate on a build, lease, maintain and transfer model, meaning the government will not directly bear maintenance costs but will pay through a long-term lease arrangement.
