Weather forecasters will have an additional month to tap Defense Department satellite data that is widely relied upon for hurricane forecasting, extending a deadline that would have ended National Weather Service access Monday to the information.
The termination of data products from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program was met with fierce criticism from scientists who said it could diminish hurricane forecasting accuracy just as the 2025 storm season is ramping up.
In a statement, NOAA spokesperson Kim Doster said the extension followed a request on Friday from NASA to the removal and to continue processing and distributing data from the DMSP.

The administration now expects to decommission DMSP processing no later than July 31, she said.

Three hundred fire personnel, four helicopters and 70 engines continued to work to get a handle on the blaze, which began in the area of Old Idyllwild Road and Wolfskill Truck Trail. 3D Time Could Solve Physics' Biggest Problem, Says Bizarre New Study
Clocks might be far more fundamental to physics than we ever realized. A new theory suggests what we see around us – from the smallest of quantum actions to the cosmic crawl of entire galaxies – could all be literally a matter of time. Three dimensions of time, in fact. The basic idea of 3D time isn't new. But University of Alaska geophysicist Gunther Kletetschka says his mathematical framework is the first to reproduce known properties of the Universe, making it a somewhat serious contender for uniting physics under one consistent model. "Earlier 3D time proposals were primarily mathematical constructs without these concrete experimental connections," says Kletetschka. Something is wrong with our current models of reality. While quantum mechanics and general relativity both explain our Universe to a degree that's uncannily accurate, each emerges from fundamentally distinct grounds – one granular and random, the other seamless and immutable. These irreconcilable starting points make it a challenge to construct a single, all-ruling theory of physics that explains gravity in the same way as it does the other three forces. Not that theorists haven't tried. Kletetschka proposes a complete rethink on the basics, pulling back the fabric of space-time itself to come up with a new bedrock to base reality on. While we use the word time to describe virtually any series of events, there's a clear contrast in scale that extends from the near-instantaneous flitting of quantum particles to the eons of cosmic growth stretching into eternity. On the cosmic end, time can be relative, distorting in relation to mass and acceleration. Up close, time is undecided, equally capable of looking to the past as it does to the future. And drifting in the middle is an existence as boringly predictable as tomorrow's sunrise. Separating these scales into their own dimensions provides us with three paths to follow, each marching to its own beat at right angles to the others. By embedding these timelines in mathematics that preserves cause and effect, it's possible to link all three dimensions in a way that could explain everything from how fundamental particles pop up in quantum fields, to why we can't experience quantum weirdness, to the expanding boundaries of the Universe itself. "These three time dimensions are the primary fabric of everything, like the canvas of a painting," says Kletetschka. "Space still exists with its three dimensions, but it's more like the paint on the canvas rather than the canvas itself." Fewer Teens Drinking, Unless They've Considered Suicide
TOPLINE: The prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking declined among adolescents, but those with a recent history of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) showed more modest declines. METHODOLOGY: Researchers analyzed national survey data from 1991 to 2023 involving adolescents in grades 9 through 12 (n = 254,675) to examine temporal trends in use of alcohol and cannabis among those with and without a recent history of STB. Teens were asked if they had suicidal thoughts over the past year or if they had made any attempts at suicide, on the basis of which researchers defined two groups. Current alcohol use was defined as consumption of at least one drink on one or more days in the past 30 days; binge drinking was defined as the consumption of five or more drinks within a couple of hours on one or more days in the past 30 days. Current cannabis use was defined as use over the past 30 days. The trends in the prevalence rates of substance use were studied, as well as biennial percent change (BPC). TAKEAWAY: The prevalence of current alcohol use declined significantly from 2009 to 2023 among those with no STB (BPC, -5.41; P < .001) and 2007 onward among those with a history of suicidal ideation only (BPC, -3.51; P < .001) and suicide attempts (BPC, -2.82; P < .001). Teens without a recent history of STBs showed steeper declines in the prevalence of binge drinking than those with recent suicidal ideation or suicide attempts. Since 1995, the prevalence of cannabis use decreased significantly among adolescents without a recent history of STBs, but no significant change was observed for the other groups of teens. Among girls with a recent history of suicidal thoughts or attempts, the decline in alcohol use occurred at a more modest rate compared with the faster decline observed in girls without a recent history of STBs; and the rates of cannabis use plateaued since the 1990s for both. IN PRACTICE: '[These] findings suggest the need for continued screening and assessment of substance misuse among adolescents presenting with STBs, as well as the importance of developing targeted treatments to address these co-occurring concerns,' the authors wrote.
