The Childrens Music Awards highlight the incredible children's musicians that show us what happens when creativity, imagination, fun and music collide in a uniquely Kiwi way.
Welcome to the most entertaining, toe-tapping, imaginative Awards in Aotearoa, the 2025 Aotearoa Children's Music Awards | Ngā Manu Tīrairaka. Announced today, finalists will be celebrated at the annual Awards on Sunday 29 June at Tuning Fork, Tāmaki Makaurau. For the first time, public will also be able to purchase tickets to a very special CMAs Sounds Fun pre-event hosted by Suzy Cato.
The Children's Music Awards highlight the incredible children's musicians that show us what happens when creativity, imagination, fun and music collide in a uniquely Kiwi way. Behind the music is education, and through this year's finalists we learn that – yes, you can be a fairy even if you have hairy toes, and that the best way to escape cardigan-wearing slugs is, of course, to get out and about.
We have glowworms lighting up orchestras, lessons in Tongan and Māori, mindful pirates reminding us to breathe even when you can't find any clean underwear – and Kiri and Lou prove once again that you can never have too much Anika Moa. Through waiata, our finalists share with our smallest people with the biggest hearts, that being different is what makes us special.

Recently honoured in the King's Birthday Honours as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for her contributions to children's programming, music, and education, Suzy Cato – curator of the Children's Music Awards, and a beloved NZ children's music writer, author, and broadcaster – is thrilled with the flourishing state of Aotearoa's children's music community. She is especially excited that, for the first time, a live event will be open to the public, allowing even more people to experience the magic of children's music firsthand.
'The New Zealand children's music industry continues to go from strength to strength, fuelled by the passion of our singer-songwriters to create quality children's content, and the generous support of NZ On Air's music and content funding,' says Cato. 'The number of collaborations this past year has given the industry such a boost, too, as more and more audiences are hearing songs created specifically for them. We're thrilled to open the performance side of the Awards event to the public this year, with performances from all finalists in one way or another. And as we dance, sing, and party our way towards the 10th Aotearoa Children's Music Awards in 2026, we look forward to creating an even bigger, 'funner' event for all involved.'
Presented by Recorded Music NZ, APRA AMCOS NZ, and NZ On Air, the awards have the support of Kiwi Kids Music, the national association of children's songwriters, creators and producers. Formed by some of the most passionate creators of music for kiwi kids, the association supports NZ children's music creators and seeks to advance the potential of all our children to live healthy fulfilling lives.
Finalists will perform in a Sounds Fun event, at 10am Sunday 29 June at the Tuning Fork, Spark Arena – tickets available from Moshtix. Winners will be announced at an invite only ceremony at Tuning Fork, that afternoon. The show will be hosted by Suzy Cato with awards presented by tamariki from across Aotearoa, with plenty of fun and games for those special guests before the Award ceremony begins!

Workmates: American Playboy, Narcos star Matt Whelan explores love and theatre in new NZ film
'I love the genre of romance and relationship dramas and exploring that,' the Go Girls alum admits. He says his latest movie, NZ International Film Festival entry Workmates, felt 'very real'. Matt Whelan and Sophie Henderson in Workmates, a love letter to Kiwi theatre and love itself. Directed by Curtis Vowell, Workmates draws on the real-life experiences Vowell and writer and star Sophie Henderson (Fantail) undertook as they found their feet in the wonderful world of theatre. Filmed at recognisable Auckland institutions like the Basement theatre and ASB Aotea Centre, and featuring an all-star Kiwi cast, Whelan says the movie shows an unseen side of the NZ theatre scene from those who know it best. Truthful, honest and messy are just some of the words he uses to describe the heart of the film. 'I think that's largely due to Sophie's real-life experience of running the Basement. She's had those experiences. 'I love theatre, and I love that we were able to create something as kind of like a little nod or a love letter to theatre and to the creative community.' Workmates explores the relationship between two people working in theatre, and the trials and tribulations of romance. Another big part of the project was trust, something Whelan says Vowell and Henderson had in bounds. There was a degree of improv involved, with the cast given freedom to work together to create something special from the script. 'There's that satisfaction of being able to really sit deeply in something, and just to be present and not be afraid of making dumb choices. It was malleable enough that we could take it to places and experiment,' Whelan says. It was also, in some sense, a full-circle moment for Whelan, who is once again stepping into the shoes of a romantic lead. It's been more than 10 years since rom-com drama Go Girls ended, an experience Whelan credits as a great 'learning ground' for his diverse career since. 'I think it was a big turning point in Kiwi television as well,' he says. 'It was a really fun show, and again, great cast and great people.' Kiwi actor Matt Whelan makes a star turn in season three of Narcos. Whelan has since made a name for himself on the world stage with his roles in American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story and Narcos, but reveals there isn't much difference between working on Kiwi projects and those in the US. 'It's not too dissimilar,' he says. 'The only thing that you notice is there's maybe some more lights around, or there's more crew, but as far as going into the shoot, it's a very similar thing.' A lot of that might have to do with his commitment to the work as an actor, fully engaging in the task at hand, no matter the circumstances. 'When the cameras are rolling, I'm only focused on the other person, you know, in the scene, or the other people on the scene. I'm just kind of there, present with them. In a way, kind of nothing else really matters.' Workmates was shot at theatres around Auckland, including the Aotea Centre and the Basement. For someone who's been in the game for as long as Whelan, it's no surprise he's learned a thing or two about the business and has some sage advice for young actors heading into the wild unknown world. 'It's not like something where you're in a corporate job, for example, and there's a ladder that you can climb. 'Sometimes the next job can feed into opportunities that can open up for you in the future, but nothing is guaranteed.' He says the key is putting yourself out there, and what better way to do that than in your local theatre scene. 'There will always be spaces for performers, so I would always encourage anybody who wants to pursue that to do it because there will always be a space for you to put something on and to create something.' But as with all professionals, making the most of your downtime is also crucial. Now based in Taranaki, Whelan isn't just stretching his acting muscles; he's also stretching his real ones after taking up weightlifting. 'I'm certainly not at an Olympic level, but it's lots of learning, like what a snatch and a clean and jerk are. I'm also a big board gamer.' Workmates will screen at the New Zealand International Film Festival 2025 on August 1 at the Civic in Auckland and will be released nationally on August 21. New Gibbston music fest on the way

PHOTO: SUPPLIED While Gibbston may have lost the annual Summer Concert Tour, a new music festival's stepping into the breach. The Valley, billed as a new music and lifestyle festival, will debut on January 24 at Gibbston's The Church Cellar Door and Cafe. The event, to run from noon till 8pm, is being produced by the Ripe Events team, best known for Wānaka's Ripe Festival, which started in 2021. Festival director Nathan White says The Valley's been over a year in the planning and will bring together the best of what Gibbston has to offer; "music, flavour, scenery and atmosphere". "This isn't just another summer gig. It's an elevated experience in one of the most iconic spots in the country. "I've been wanting to bring something to Queenstown for many years, but have been waiting for the perfect venue and time, really." Along with world-class wines, courtesy of Mount Edward, craft brews from Queenstown's Canyon Brewing and a host of food options, there's also a "monster" lineup of top-flight Kiwi musos confirmed, though White's keeping their identities under wraps, for now. Capacity for The Valley is 5000. White also notes there's improved site access, meaning they'll be able to operate a one-way system, "so there should be no traffic holdups at all". Tickets, priced around $100, will go on sale on September 1.

Westenra 'heartbroken' over friends' deaths in LA homicide

Photo: Instagram/Hayley Westenra Kiwi singer Hayley Westenra says she's "completely heartbroken" after learning of the double homicide of her long-time friends American Idol music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca. The Los Angeles Police Department said the couple, both 70, were found dead with gunshot wounds on July 14, 2025, but their investigation found a radio call had been made about a possible burglary at their home four days earlier. Police believe the couple returned home and were confronted by the suspect, who already gained entry. Police said a 22-year-old suspect has now been arrested and charged with murder. In a message posted on social media, Westenra said she only found out the news of the death of her "surrogate aunty and uncle" this morning. "They were the KINDEST of souls. I'd met Robin & Tom over 20 years ago through work and then we became lifelong friends," the 38-year-old said. "I stayed with them many times including my last night in LA when I was escaping a very bad relationship (they likely saved my life)." Westenra shared a video of her and Deluca performing Lovers Game, which she said Kaye wanted her to post when they had been messaging a few months ago. "I want people to remember them this way … bright, loyal & loving souls." Born in Christchurch, Westenra rose to fame after she signed with Universal Records New Zealand at the age of 12 and released a self-titled album in 2001. In a statement, a spokesperson for the American Idol series told ABC that Kaye had been with the TV show since 2009. "We are devastated to hear of Robin and her dear husband, Tom's, passing," the spokesperson said in a statement. "Robin has been a cornerstone of the Idol family since 2009 and was truly loved and respected by all who came in contact with her. Robin will remain in our hearts forever and we share our deepest sympathy with her family and friends during this difficult time." Kaye also served as music supervisor on Lip Sync Battle, After the Sunset, The Singing Bee and Q'Viva!: The Chosen as well as multiple Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. Singer and musician Deluca released his own albums Down to the Wire (produced by James Guthrie, Pink Floyd) and Street Rock, and had composed songs for artists like Kid Rock, Micky Dolenz and Diesel.
