Findlay Curtis turns Rangers dream into reality as Russell Martin's running man understands the assignment

Daily Record19 hours ago
Curtis was the only player to play the full 90 against Club Brugge as he embraces new boss' non negotiable with gusto
His body was telling him he had nothing left in the tank.
With just a minute to go at Ibrox on Sunday, young Findlay Curtis was the only Rangers player going to last the full 90.

No-one could have said he hadn't put a shift in against Club Brugge. And in Russell Martin's first friendly, the kid had impressed his new gaffer.

So when Nedim Bajrami broke through on goal, it would have been easy for Curtis just to let the Albanian get on with it.
After all, a few minutes before, he was struggling to WALK as his legs cramped up. But his head told him there was one last, lung-bursting sprint left in him.
Somehow, he summoned up the energy, not just to get in the box and offer himself to Bajrami. But to collect a pass, compose himself and produce a clinical finish beyond the Brugge keeper for a goal that earned Martin and Rangers a 2-2 draw.
And in doing so, Curtis turned a dream of scoring for his boyhood club at Ibrox into reality.
The 18-year-old will have had worse Sunday afternoons. The bounce game against Brugge might not matter too much in the grand scheme of things.
But for Curtis it could be vital as he tries to make a lasting impression on his manager that - amidst an influx of new players - keeps him in Rangers' first-team squad for the foreseeable future.

He's not the finished article, by any stretch. But when Martin arrived in Glasgow this summer, he revealed his first non-negotiable as a boss was that players had to run.
Judging by Sunday's display, Curtis will do that all day for him. That's why he was the only sweat-filled blue shirt to play the entire game.
And the youngster's resilience late on - as well as a tidy finish - will have pleased his manager no-end. Afterwards, Curtis could barely wipe the smile off his face.

As he reflected on his performance, he said: 'I was buzzing with the goal, it's a dream come true for me to score at Ibrox.
'Nedim played the ball through to me and we'd been working on that for a full week.

'So I was just delighted that he set me up to score a goal.
'I just saw Nedim running and I thought, let's put the burners on and hopefully score, which I did.
'It was a sloppy start from us in the first half but the boys who came on in the second half brought a real energy - that's what the manager wanted.

'It was great to get the goal after a good second half performance.
'It's been intense under the gaffer. He wants us to do loads of runs and I think you saw that on Sunday.
'I'm just delighted to be part of it.

'I was the only one to play 90 minutes and I've been working on my running all week - and in the off-season.
'I wanted to come back the fittest I've been and I was pleased to get the 90 as well as a goal.'
Martin has already added five new players to his ranks this summer, with Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell, Manny Fernandez and Thelo Aasgaard all arriving at Ibrox.

And by the time Rangers take on Panathinaikos in a Champions League qualifier on July 22, that number could go well into double figures.
It's never easy at the best of times for a young player to make the breakthrough at Rangers.
With Martin under pressure to win and deliver silverware, it might be even more difficult for academy graduates.

But young Curtis has a steely resolve about him and he plans to work so hard, it will be impossible for the gaffer to ignore him.
On whether he feels he'll get an opportunity this season, the teenager said: 'It's obviously the manager's decision who plays. All I can do is try and impress over the coming weeks and see what happens.

'It's early days but I really want to impress him.
'The ambition is to make the next step and become one of the first names on his team sheet.
'It's down to him but I just have to work hard in training.

'What are the differences under this manager? It's just more intense.
'He's brought a real energy into the training ground and he wants to play in his style. I think it's working so far.
'There's been a positive reaction from the players to what he's trying to achieve.

'All the boys are buzzing with it. It looks like the group is coming together, which is great to see.
'I'm happy wherever the manager plays me. Hopefully there's a bit of trust there from him that I can play off both wings, like I did on Sunday - or as a number 10.
'Wherever I'm playing on the pitch, I'll just give my all for this team.'

Rangers will head to England this week for another week's training as they prepare for that Champions League crunch against the Greeks.
More fresh faces will be on board by then and whether Curtis will get to play a part in a huge European tie remains to be seen.

He's just hoping to do enough that IF he's called upon - Martin can have faith in him to do a job.
Curtis said: 'We've still got two weeks before the Panathinaikos game so we'll just focus on our trip to St George's Park first.
'Do I feel capable of playing at that level? I suppose we'll just need to wait and see.
'Right now, it's about me impressing the manager and hopefully he can put that trust in me.'

Joe Rothwell is living proof of Rangers ambitions as Leeds insider believes new man is Premier League class

Rothwell is good enough for the Premier League according to Stuart Dallas and the fact he's joined Rangers is a sign of both teams' ambitions Stuart Dallas reckons it's a sign of Leeds' Premier League ambitions this season that his old club was prepared to let Joe Rothwell leave. But he's looking at Rangers ' capture of one of the Elland Road side's key men last term as a clear signal of the Ibrox outfit's intent for the coming campaign too. ‌ Former Elland Road hero Dallas is a huge fan of Russell Martin's new midfield recruit. ‌ He credits the 30-year-old with being among Daniel Farke's standout performers last term as his Yorkshire raiders stormed their way to Championship victory and promotion back to England's mega-rich top flight. Dallas felt the ex-Blackburn ace could have played another important role for Leeds in among the big boys this season had they made last year's loan switch from Bournemouth permanent. Farke had other plans, though, and is now chasing Hoffenheim's £14million midfield man Anton Stach as he seeks to construct a team capable of surviving in the toughest league on earth. But while Leeds decision not to pursue Rothwell has surprised Lillywhites legend Dallas, the boyhood Bluenose is delighted he's now on board at Rangers as his childhood heroes look to pull up their own seat among the European elite in the Champions League. Dallas told Record Sport: 'I think it shows the ambition that Leeds have that they can let a player like Joe Rothwell leave and try to find someone better. ‌ 'Had Farke signed him, I felt it would have been a good addition for his team going back up to the Premier League. But I think it also shows the ambition of Rangers that they've gone and got a player who was arguably one of the best midfielders in the Championship last year.' Rothwell was introduced to the Ibrox faithful at half-time of Sunday's friendly draw with Club Brugge as he took a bow alongside fellow new recruits Thelo Aasgaard and Lyle Cameron. But Dallas can't wait to see how he fits into Martin's new look Light Blues side. ‌ Rothwell and his new team-mates are heading south to St George's Park, the £80million training base used by Thomas Tuchel's England side, for a week-long training camp. Russell has lined up a closed-door clash against mystery opposition, meaning the Gers support will have to wait until the vital Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos on July 22 to get their first sight of Rothwell in a blue jersey. But Dallas - a Championship winner with Leeds in 2020 - said: 'I'm excited having seen what Joe did for Leeds last year. ‌ 'He came in on loan from Bournemouth but he didn't start the season in the team because Leeds had Ethen Ampadu and Ilia Gruev. 'They were a brilliant midfielder pair - but by chance they both got injured in the same week. 'You looked at Leeds and thought the one position they can't afford to lose is centre midfield because at that stage we didn't know much about Ao Tanaka. ‌ 'But as it goes, Joe and Tanaka were probably a better midfield partnership. 'I've obviously known Joe as a player, having come up against him many times. ‌ 'And when he started playing for Leeds, he was brilliant. He was so good throughout the rest of the season. 'He was exactly what Leeds needed. At times he'd run games in the Championship from midfield. 'Technically he's very good - very neat and tidy on the ball. He breaks up play really well. He's got a good range of passing. ‌ 'But for me, his main strength is he can carry the ball. At times when Leeds were playing against a low block, which obviously Rangers are going to come up against next season, they needed somebody to break a line and this is what Joe was actually really, really good at doing. 'He's not a creative No10, but he can certainly drive with the ball. That's a big strength, as is his range of passing and set-piece delivery. 'He's a big character as well. He's quiet within his own right, but he'll be a leader within the dressing room, which is exactly what Rangers need. ‌ 'They need leaders not just on the park, but off the park as well. 'He's player who can run games himself at times. When a team needs a little bit of energy, he was able to inject that into the game. If I remember correctly, there was a big match away at Sheffield United when Leeds were struggling at 1-0 down. 'I was at the game covering it for Sky ‌ 'Daniel Farke introduced Joe just after half-time and you could just feel the game change. 'With his running power with the ball, he really grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck that night. That's what he is capable of. "I look at the Rangers squad and I don't see another player really like that. ‌ 'Obviously they've got Nico Raskin in there and I think he would form a great partnership, the two of them. 'I think that's probably what Rangers have lacked, the ability to control games at times through their midfield. 'I think he's a great fit for them, to be honest.' ‌ Four of Gers' five summer signings have been recruited from south of Hadrian's Wall. But that has worried some fans still suffering flashbacks to the recruitment misadventures in England that have cost the club so dear in recent years. Dallas, however, is confident that value for money can be found in the EFL. ‌ He said: 'I played the majority of my career in the EFL and I still think it can be a worthwhile market for clubs like Rangers. 'Certainly there is good talent available at the top end of the Championship, maybe even the lower end of the Premier League if possible as well. 'Rangers are in a position now, obviously, where they haven't been winning trophies. ‌ 'But the challenge of getting the club back to that level will still attract players, especially with the lure of European competition too. 'I think it shows what Joe's all about as well that he's willing to go up there. 'There's been interest elsewhere for him by all accounts, with clubs in Spain mentioned. 'Joe played in the best team in the Championship last year and was a standout player. I think it makes perfect sense for Rangers to go for a player like him.'

Wrexham hit with major Jamie Vardy blow as rival boss hints at stunning deal

Wrexham have been linked with a move for Jamie Vardy, but Rangers have now emerged as a potential destination and manager Russell Martin has addressed the rumours Rangers boss Russell Martin has refused to rule out signing Jamie Vardy this summer, with the former England international available on a free transfer. Vardy left Leicester after 13 years last season and has also been linked with a move to Wrexham. The 38-year-old scored 145 Premier League goals for Leicester, a figure that puts him 14th on the all-time list, and Rangers have been mooted as a potential destination. And when asked about a move for Vardy following a pre-season friendly against Club Brugge, Martin refused to be drawn. ‌ "I think I've been asked about so many players," he said. "Some miles away, some on the money. So, basically, I'm not going to give you an answer on that. But I guess you'll find out who's real and who's not in the next few weeks. ‌ "I think we definitely want to do more [signings], for sure. And also probably some players need to move on as well at some point because the squad's going to start looking very big and very heavy." Although Wrexham have long been credited with an interested in Vardy, reports emerged from Italy recently claiming that Genoa had been in pole position to sign the striker. It was claimed that the club's sporting director, Flavio Ricciardella, was keen on signing Vardy. Riccardella is said to have lined up a deal which would have been financed by support from sponsors, but Genoa boss Patrick Vieira reportedly vetoed the move. ‌ Vardy has said he believes he can still compete at the highest level, telling Sky Sports back in May that he has no doubts about his ability. "No, but that's just me," he said. " Football is a crazy world. "You never know what's going to happen. I'll keep going until my legs tell me I need to stop. My legs are fine. I'm doing a sport that I love, it's what I've done since I was a little kid so long may that continue." ‌ Reflecting on his time at Leicester, Vardy added: "You can speak to my family and they'll all say I'm emotionless. It might do at the end of the game or whatever, but until that happens, I'm literally just focused on the game. "You don't get a chance to look back on it. It's about seeing out the season with momentum to start next season. I keep saying it and it's weird, but you don't get a chance to look back on it. Because you're in it, the season finishes, you shut off completely. ‌ "Mentally and physically, it's a killer. It does you in. So by the time you've then had your couple of weeks to switch off, you're then back in, getting ready for the new season. So it just keeps rolling into one."
