TDP, YSRCP face off in high-stakes Kuppam chairman poll
The upcoming election is not just about filling a vacant post — it is being viewed as a litmus test of the shifting political undercurrents in Andhra Pradesh's post-election landscape.
The chairman's seat has remained unoccupied since November 2024, following the resignation of Dr Sudheer Darbha, who not only relinquished his position and councillor post but also switched loyalties to the TDP.
His entry into the party, facilitated at a high-profile event in Amaravati, marked the beginning of a quiet but steady churn within the Kuppam municipality.
While the YSRCP had secured a comfortable majority in the 2021 municipal elections — winning 19 of the 25 wards — the ground has since shifted.
Following Sudheer's defection, five more YSRCP councillors crossed over to the TDP, narrowing the tally to 13 for the YSRCP and 11 for the TDP. Though the numbers still favour the YSRCP, the contest has become tighter, prompting both parties to guard their flanks.
The TDP, sensing an opportunity, has ramped up internal consultations and is expected to announce its candidate soon.
Councillors Somasekhar and Damu are currently being considered, though there is growing buzz that the party could re-nominate Dr Sudheer himself — especially since unconfirmed reports suggest his resignation from the councillor post may not yet have been formally accepted.
Meanwhile, the YSRCP is leaving nothing to chance. In a bid to prevent further erosion, the party is believed to have shifted its councillors to a secret location, following the playbook of 'camp politics' that has been seen in other tightly contested civic elections.
With the support of their respective MLCs — Dr K Srikanth (TDP) and KRJ Bharath (YSRCP) — the final numbers stand at 12 for the TDP and 14 for the YSRCP, assuming all votes fall along party lines. As CM Chandrababu Naidu who represents Kuppam in the legislative Assembly may abstain from the voting in all probabilities, it could prove costly for the TDP, unless it manages to engineer a final round of switches before April 28.
A senior TDP leader close to the developments said, 'Kuppam is no longer just a YSRCP-dominated civic body. The momentum is clearly on our side. We are confident of securing the votes needed to take back the chairman's post and reset the governance agenda.'
The Kuppam municipality chairman election has taken on significance beyond just vote counts — it's now seen as a reflection of the broader political shifts playing out across the State.
With changing loyalties, tighter margins, and each ward turning into a battleground for strategy, the stakes are high.

Maharashtra govt is ‘beggar': Minister Manikrao Kokate adds fuel to fire after ‘rummy' video row; Fadnavis reacts
Maharashtra minister Manikrao Kokate, who was 'caught playing rummy' on his phone inside the Assembly, has added fuel to the fire as he termed the government a 'beggar' while trying to clarify an earlier 'beggar' comment on farmers. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reacted to the controversy, saying it was 'inappropriate' for ministers to speak in such a manner, while asserting Maharashtra's economy was in good shape despite challenges. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate had allegedly compared farmers to beggars, inviting severe criticism. 'Even a beggar does not take Re 1 in alms, but here we are giving crop insurance for Re 1. Even then, some people try to misuse it,' he had said. When asked about the remark, Manikrao Kokate compared the Maharashtrian government to 'beggar'. He said, 'The government doesn't give Re 1 to farmers, it takes Re 1 from them. The government is a beggar,' PTI quoted him as saying. He also said that 5 lakh to 5.3 lakh bogus applications for the Re 1 crop insurance scheme had been received and he rejected them and implemented several corrective steps. The Re 1 crop insurance scheme, launched two years ago, was scrapped a few months back and replaced with the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme. He also reacted to the alleged video of him playing rummy and warned of legal action against politicians who "defamed" him by sharing his video. 'I don't know how to play online rummy. One needs an OTP, and a bank account needs to be linked to play the game. One can check if my mobile phone is linked to any such game. I was trying to skip a game which popped up on my screen for 10 to 15 seconds,' he said. When asked about the 'beggar' statement by the Maharashtra government, Devendra Fadnavis said, 'If he has made such a comment, it is inappropriate for ministers to speak in this manner. We have taken corrective measures in the crop insurance scheme as we saw insurance companies benefitting and not farmers.' 'We have taken steps to make an investment of ₹ 5,000 crore every year in the agriculture sector. Maharashtra's economy is good despite challenges,' the chief minister told reporters in Gadchiroli. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule in a post on X said calling the state "beggar" was insensitive and 'insult' to all the work the state government has done over the years. 'It is an insult to the hard work of all the chief ministers of the state so far and the people of the state. We will never tolerate this insult,' she said.

Shashi Tharoor dares Kerala Congress over 'pro-Modi' snub, asks 'who are they?'
A significant rift has emerged between Shashi Tharoor and the Kerala Congress, with the state unit boycotting the Thiruvananthapuram MP over his alleged 'pro-Modi' position. The Kerala Congress has stated it will not cooperate with Tharoor, accusing him of attacking the party, Indira Gandhi, and opposing Rahul Gandhi's statements. In response, Tharoor has challenged his critics, asking, "Who are they? What is their party position?" He maintains there is no basis for the allegations. This internal conflict intensifies as the state unit calls for the Congress High Command to intervene. The friction is also reportedly linked to Tharoor's expressed interest in being the Chief Ministerial candidate for the next Assembly elections, a move that has caused friction with some state leaders.
