KRON4 goes below deck on the SF Bay Ferry

Yahoo12-05-2025
ALAMEDA, Calif. (KRON) — Thousands of commuters take the ferry to work daily from the Alameda Seaplane Lagoon Ferry Terminal, a newer terminal near the USS Hornet. The San Francisco Bay Ferry fleet, which carries an average of 7,500 passengers daily, operates 18 boats from Alameda.
Tickets for the ferry are priced at just under $5 each way.
'You know, I do have to pinch myself sometimes to sort of remind myself how lucky I am to get this view,' said Captain Morgan Wodhams of the SF Bay Ferry. 'People come from miles away to experience the San Francisco Bay, so to sort of be in it and be a part of it on a daily basis, I do feel gratitude at that.'

The ferry, which cost $15 million, can carry up to 400 passengers. The fleet is set to expand with five electric ferries joining in early 2027.
The fleet operates across 11 terminals spread throughout the bay, providing a crucial service for daily commuters.

JD Vance's Summer Vacation Is About to Be Hit With Major Protests

The UK Stop Trump Coalition and other protesters are planning to put Vice President JD Vance's luxury vacation spot on blast. Vance and his family have a trip scheduled for the Cotswolds, a countryside region in Southwest England often frequented by the rich and famous (Ellen DeGeneres currently resides there). They're expected to be met with a wide variety of demonstrators—anti-Trump, pro-Palestinian, trade union members, and environmentalists. 'JD Vance is every bit as unwelcome in the UK as Donald Trump,' a representative from the UK based Stop Trump Coalition told The Telegraph. 'We remember how Vance cut short his ski trip in Vermont because he was so enraged by the sight of a few protesters. We are sure that, even in the Cotswolds, he will find the resistance waiting.' The group also plans to protest President Trump's upcoming visit to Scotland, which begins on Friday. Vance will also be in London in mid-August, then head to Cotswolds, and later to Scotland. The vice president has been met with vitriol on his vacations thus far, speaking to the mostly negative feelings that much of the public has for the current administration, both home and abroad. He and his family were booed ruthlessly while they were at Disneyland earlier this month. 'Hope you enjoy your family time, @JDVance,' California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X. 'The families you're tearing apart certainly won't.'

California fire weather: These areas face high risk due to windy conditions

Parts of the East Bay and South Bay face high fire risk Thursday due to windy conditions, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. The outlook indicates high risk for significant fires in the Diablo and Santa Cruz Mountains. Critical wind speeds and low relative humidity mean elevated chances for significant fires and the potential for rapid fire growth. There is a high risk for significant fires due to lightning in Modoc County and other locations along the border of Northern California and Nevada. The forecast there calls for dry thunderstorms with gusty outflows. The Lake Tahoe area faces high risk for significant fires Thursday, due to dry gusty winds. A passing low-pressure system is expected to bring breezy weather and cool temperatures to the Bay Area into the Fourth of July holiday weekend. As of Wednesday morning, the forecast conditions hadn't triggered a wind advisory or red flag warning, but National Weather Service meteorologists forecast gusts of 25 mph to 40 mph in coastal areas, higher terrain and inland passes across the Bay Area. 'We all must do our part to keep Fourth of July fun and safe,' said Governor Gavin Newsom in a statement.

Los Angeles tourism officials monitor impact of immigration protests

Los Angeles tourism officials are monitoring the potential impact of protests against the federal government's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Those protests stretched into a seventh day on Thursday. The protests began on June 6, following a series of controversial ICE raids across Los Angeles, including in Downtown L.A. The situation escalated on June 7, when President Donald Trump authorized the deployment of around 2,000 National Guard personnel to the greater Los Angeles area, and later added approximately 700 Marines, despite opposition from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. In response to continuing unrest, Mayor Bass has issued a curfew for Downtown Los Angeles from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., which remains in effect. The curfew area includes downtown L.A. neighborhoods Chinatown and the Arts District as well as the L.A. Live entertainment district. The Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board issued a statement on its website, reassuring travelers that "the greater Los Angeles region remains open for business." "Visitors are advised to stay informed, follow local guidance and steer clear of areas experiencing temporary disruptions," the tourism board said, encouraging Downtown L.A. visitors to track updates via the city's NotifyLA mass notification system. The organization also warned that visitors could be impacted by transportation disruptions, citing potential "delays or detours in Metro bus and rail services, especially in and around Downtown Los Angeles" due to protests. Hotels in impacted and surrounding areas are open. A spokesperson for the Conrad Los Angeles, located in the heart of Downtown L.A., confirmed that the property "remains open and fully operational." Tom Kiely, CEO of Visit West Hollywood, called the protests "concerning." "We are monitoring our short-term trends to see what impact these protests might have on our West Hollywood hotel bookings," said Kiely. "So far we don't see any significant impact, but if the protests continue for a while, that might change." During a June 11 media event in New York hosted by Preferred Hotels & Resorts, Frederic Zemmour, general manager of L'Ermitage Beverly Hills, told attendees that the hotel is already seeing some cancellations. "Don't cancel," he urged potential visitors. "Los Angeles is very safe."
