Scoot launches flights to Da Nang, Nha Trang and Kota Bharu; direct Okinawa flights by year-end

Time Out07-07-2025
As dismayed as we were to hear that Jetstar Asia is ceasing operations, it's with relief that we see Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines stepping in to fill the void. The airline just announced the launch of three new routes to Vietnam and Malaysia in October 2025, with more longed-for destinations set to join its network by the end of the year. Here's what you can look forward to.
New direct flights to Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Kota Bharu
Fancy a beach escape sometime soon? Then Vietnam's hot coastal cities, Da Nang and Nha Trang, may be your best bet. Meanwhile, those keen to learn more about traditional Malaysian crafts can now fly straight to under-the-radar city, Kota Bharu, the state capital and royal seat of Kelantan.
Here's the expected schedule and one-way ticket prices:
Da Nang: Three times weekly from October 20; progressively increased to daily flights by December 2025; from 115 SGD
Nha Trang: Two times weekly from November 21; progressively increased to five times weekly flights by January 2026; from 135 SGD
Kota Bharu: Two times weekly flights from October 26; from 78 SG
It's a bit of a pity that the Vietnam flights will only begin operation in the later half of the year when monsoon season is expected to sweep into central and south Vietnam. We suggest heading to Kota Bharu first while the weather is still dry (usually March to October) and leaving Nha Trang for January or Da Nang for February, when their respective dry seasons begin. Tickets are now available on Scoot's website.
More routes to look forward to at year-end
Many bemoaned the loss of the Singapore-Okinawa direct flight with the closure of Jetstar Asia. Well, good news – Scoot will launch services to the Japanese prefecture during the northern winter 2025 season. It also plans to launch flights to Medan and Labuan Bajo (the gateway to diving hotspot Komodo National Park) in Indonesia.
Besides these new routes, Scoot will also boost flight frequency on a number of existing routes. Destinations that will soon get more flights:
From July 2025: Jakarta, Indonesia; Sydney, Australia
From August 2025: Clark, Philippines; Perth, Australia
From September 2025: Davao and Manila, Philippines; Hat Yai, Thailand
Limited-time sales to start soon
Here's something to sweeten the deal: a limited-time sale to selected destinations happening from July 8 to 13. The promotional fares will be on offer on Scoot's website and mobile application. This is on top of a sales launch for the new destinations.
To get alerts about the fare, we encourage you to follow Scoot on social media or subscribe to its newsletter.

The first curved escalators in Europe are coming to London

Honestly, London receiving game-changing, futuristic escalators was not on our 2025 bingo card. But why not? The mechanical step-savers are everywhere we look, from tube stations to tired office buildings, so it's about time they got an upgrade. And Harrods is leading the way in doing just that. Kiss goodbye to the run-of-the-mill straight escalator we've all all come to know and love, as London's poshest department store is about to go round the bend. Yes, Harrods has just announced it's installing Europe's first-ever curved escalators. In some ways, it's not that surprising that the Brompton Road retail cathedral is ahead of the curve. As all true London escalator-heads know, back in 1898, Harrods brought the first escalator to Britain. Soon Harrods will join a select few locations in the US and Asia, including iconic Las Vegas hotel and casino Caesars Palace, as the proud home of a curved escalator. Fun fact: the world's only manufacturer of curved escalators is Japanese producer Mitsubishi. Construction of the new curved escalators is expected to begin in 2026 as part of a multi-million-pound renovation to merge Harrods' fine jewellery and watches departments. The transformation will also deepen the lower ground and sub-basement levels of the store to make way for a 'first-of-its-kind vertical two-storey boutique concept'. The reimagined design of the Grade II-listed building will create 'an impressive sense of arrival, emulating the original Edwardian sales rooms', says Katy Ghahremani, director at architects' firm Make and the project lead. Harrods director of store development Martin Illingworth has promised – rather thrillingly – that the new escalator is 'undoubtedly one of the most complex and ambitious transformations we've undertaken within store in Harrods' 175-year history'. Quite the claim, considering Harrods is no stranger to dazzling revamps. The store's dining hall recently underwent a glitzy makeover that was completed in 2023.

An earthquake and tsunami warning for the US reads: "An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.7 has struck the eastern coast of Russia in the Kamchatka Peninsula region." ‌ ‌ "A tsunami threat message has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. The 15 countries with updates travel guidance includes: Chile Costa Rica Kiribati French Polynesia USA Peru Samoa Japan Solomon Islands Ecuador Russia New Zealand Tonga China Taiwan Russia's earthquake is one of the strongest ever recorded in the region. Horror four metre high tsunami waves left buildings in pieces and caused severe flooding in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. ‌ It had a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 when it initially struck, but the US Geological Survey later updated its measurement to 8.8 magnitude. The shallow quake has caused injuries for several people while on Japan's eastern coast an order was made to evacuate. A nursery was damaged but most buildings were able to stand firm, Russian authorities said. Nearly two million individuals have been given evacuation advisories in over 220 municipalities along Japan's Pacific coast, according to the country's Fire and Disaster Management Agency. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, coastal regions in Hawaii, Chile, Japan and the Solomon Islands could expect to see waves of 1-3m (3-10ft) above tide level. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a tsunami of roughly 60cm at Hamanaka on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido and Kuji port in Iwate on the main island, an increase from an earlier tsunami of 40cm. One person has died so far, and tsunami flooding has damaged the port at Severo-Kurilsk on Russia's Kuril Islands.
