Samsung earnings slump: Profit may tumble 56% in Q2; AI chip curbs and foundry woes bite
Representative image Samsung Electronics expects its second-quarter operating profit to plunge by more than half, as US export restrictions on advanced AI chips to China and underperforming foundry operations weigh on the tech giant's earnings. In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, the company projected April–June profits of 4.6 trillion won ($3.3 billion), marking a steep 56 per cent decline from the same period last year and a 31 per cent drop from the previous quarter. The figure also fell significantly below market forecasts, coming in 23.4 per cent lower than the average estimate, reported AFP, citing South Korea's Yonhap news agency. Sales for the quarter are expected to hit 74 trillion won, barely changed from last year, but down 6.5 per cent from Q1. While the company did not reveal net income or a segment-wise breakdown, it attributed the underwhelming performance primarily to its chip division. 'Profit fell quarter-on-quarter due to inventory value adjustments and the impact of US restrictions on advanced AI chips for China,' Samsung said in a separate release. Washington has intensified curbs on exporting cutting-edge semiconductor technology to Beijing, citing concerns over their potential military applications. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo These restrictions have left Samsung's high-tech chip facilities underutilised, pushing down profitability. Analysts also highlighted a broader slowdown in Samsung's foundry business. 'The sharp profit and revenue drop is attributed primarily to the weak foundry business, while the performance of the memory business stayed relatively stable,' Tom Hsu of TrendForce was quoted as saying by AFP. Despite the slump, Samsung offered a more optimistic outlook for the latter half of 2025. The firm expects to narrow losses as factory utilisation improves and demand recovers. "Memory chip prices and shipments are expected to rise, thanks to strong demand from AI and data centres," Hsu added. Still, performance from Samsung's prized HBM (high-bandwidth memory) chips — crucial for advanced AI processing — underwhelmed in the June quarter. 'HBM likely fell short of expectations,' said Chae Min-sook of Korea Investment and Securities, adding that falling NAND flash prices for data storage likely widened losses further, as per AFP. Chae also noted that the weakening Korean won against the dollar in June may have dented both sales and operating profit. The company's woes come amid mounting trade tensions with the United States. US President Donald Trump has warned Seoul of 25 per cent tariffs and demanded global tech firms, including Samsung and Apple, shift manufacturing to the US. South Korea, already facing levies on steel and autos, said it is maintaining 'close communication' with Washington to avoid fresh duties. Google launches 'AI Mode' in Search in India: What is it and how to use
Google's AI Mode in Search, now rolling out to users in India, brings Gemini-powered multimodal responses and richer answers to complex, conversational queries New Delhi Google has officially begun rolling out its AI-powered search experience, AI Mode in Search, to users in India. Previously offered as an experimental feature under Google Search Labs, AI Mode is now becoming available to everyone through the Google app—no additional sign-up required. Google said the broader rollout follows an 'encouraging' response from users who participated in the Labs preview. Google's AI Mode in Search: Availability Google stated that the AI Mode experience in Search is already being gradually rolled out to users in India. In the coming days, users will begin to see a new 'AI Mode' tab appear in Search results as well as within the search bar of the Google app. All features previously available in the Labs version will be included in the stable rollout. However, for now, the AI Mode experience is limited to English. What is Google's AI Mode in Search? Powered by Google's Gemini 2.5 multimodal AI model, AI Mode allows users to interact with Search in more natural and visual ways. Users can speak a query, upload an image, or snap a photo using Google Lens and then ask questions based on what they see. Example use cases include identifying a plant and asking for care instructions or uploading a photo of a broken household item and asking how to fix it. AI Mode also integrates real-time local information, shopping results, and data from Google's Knowledge Graph to deliver more relevant and helpful responses. The feature is available on the Google app for both Android and iOS. Google's AI Mode in Search: How to use According to Google, AI Mode is specifically designed to handle complex, multi-step queries that would typically require several separate searches. Whether users are comparing smartphones, planning vacations, or tackling DIY projects, the AI Mode leverages Gemini's multimodal understanding to provide detailed summaries, follow-up prompts, and additional reading links. For instance, instead of running multiple searches like 'indoor games for kids,' 'cheap play activities,' or 'how to keep kids active,' users can simply ask: 'How can I keep my four and seven-year-old kids active indoors without spending much?' and receive a rich, context-aware answer with ideas, tips, and links—all in one go. Behind the scenes, the AI Mode uses a method known as 'query fan-out,' where a single complex query is broken down into smaller sub-queries. These sub-queries are then processed in parallel across the web to generate more detailed and comprehensive results—far beyond what typical keyword-based searches can offer.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra camera specs leaked: Check out the expected launch date, specifications, price, and more
Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra camera: The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra camera leak is making waves, with recent rumours revealing a powerhouse 200 MP primary sensor featuring a revolutionary variable aperture, aiming to deliver stunning shots in both bright and low-light conditions . The news doesn't stop there—a revamped telephoto system now includes a 50 MP periscope lens with 5× optical zoom, plus an upgraded 3× zoom camera boosted to 12 MP, addressing longstanding user demands. Hints of enhanced laser autofocus, AI-powered ProVisual Engine, and a sleeker form hint that Samsung is fine-tuning its photography game. As leaks paint a picture of professional-grade imaging, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is shaping up to be a camera-first flagship for 2026—and it just got more compelling. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra expected launch timeline January 2026 is the anticipated launch date for the Galaxy S26 series. But as of this moment, nothing is confirmed Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra expected camera details The future handset is expected to keep the same telephoto lens as the present Galaxy S25 Ultra, according to a recent report from GalaxyClub. A 50MP periscope lens with a 5x optical zoom may come with it. According to rumours, Samsung may also release a 200MP sensor for the secondary telephoto camera. Additionally, it is anticipated that the gadget would have a 200MP primary sensor with variable aperture, allowing users to adjust low-light and depth of field shooting. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra expected specifications Design and Display The enormous 6.9-inch display size of the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra will likely retained. However, Samsung has decreased the bezel amount, increasing the screen-to-body ratio and providing a more engaging visual experience. Following disappointing results without the digitiser, Samsung decided to retain both functions, even though initial studies contemplated deleting the S Pen and its digitiser. Modifications to the design are subtle. Samsung has improved the back panel for a more streamlined appearance, but the general design will be the same as the previous model. A more integrated camera module that eliminates visual clutter will replace the phone's protruding "chip-like" camera rings. Cooling and Performance Samsung intends to incorporate Qualcomm's most recent Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset into the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung has chosen not to release a separate Exynos model, hence the same processor will power all global variants. The TSMC-made 3nm Snapdragon chip will now serve as the primary CPU after a previously planned 2nm Samsung chip was abandoned. The gadget probably has an overclocked "For Galaxy" version of this processor for improved performance. To control heat, Samsung is anticipated to enhance the cooling system with a larger vapour chamber—roughly 1.2 times the size of the one seen in the Galaxy S25 Ultra. This enhancement could increase battery efficiency and attempts to ensure consistent performance even under demanding conditions. Storage and Memory Three storage capacities—256GB, 512GB, and 1TB—will probably be available for the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Even on the lowest model, each variant will come with 16GB of RAM to allow users to multitask without sacrificing performance. These leaks give a clear idea of what to expect, even though the official debut is still a few months away. Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra expected price in India The price has not been revealed yet.
