Nepal is a tea-loving country. Coffee could change that

Independent25-07-2025
For a nation where tea is deeply woven into the fabric of daily life, coffee has historically faced an uphill battle in Nepal.
The Himalayan country, a major producer and consumer of tea, sees the beverage as more than just a drink; it's a cultural cornerstone. The morning greeting, "have you had your tea?", underscores its pervasive presence.
Typically served as a sweet, milky concoction in a piping hot glass tumbler, tea is as integral to Nepali homes, meetings, and social gatherings as rice itself. Yet, a growing number of Nepalis are now embracing coffee, evidenced by the proliferation of trendy cafes appearing on street corners across cities and towns nationwide.
One cafe in the capital, Kathmandu, is widely seen as the pioneer.
Gagan Pradhan began Himalayan Java as a single cafe in an alley, and it's grown to a chain with 84 locations the country. Pradhan estimates there around 7,000 cafes across the country, although so far international brands like Starbucks aren't in Nepal.
'There are lot of tea shops throughout the nation, but the kind of set up they have is still kind of old fashioned,' Pradhan said. 'I think with investors and people like us, when it comes to coffee shop we are more serious not only with machines, we are serious with everything like the lighting, the set up, the furnishings, the location.'
Pradhan said tea shops usually offer just black tea or tea with milk, whereas a typical coffee menu has 10-15 hot beverages and about 10-15 cold beverages, he said.
Pradhan said it's an appealing business because the initial investment to open a cafe is very low, they're clean and simple enough for a single to family to run, and customers are willing to pay more for coffee.
Several of eastern Nepal's tea plantations in the mountains of east Nepal, famous for the tea, are joined by coffee plantations now.
Nepal is part of a regional trend. Coffee consumption has soared across traditionally tea-drinking countries in Asia as members of growing middle classes seek out novel flavors and adopt international trends.
Coffee is a premium drink in Nepal: it costs about $2 at Himalayan Java, which is enough to buy a meal at a local cafe in Kathmandu, or five cups of tea. Still, cafes bustle with officers workers on breaks and students looking for places to study.
'I think the idea of drinking coffee (in Nepal) was first triggered with people thinking it would elevate their standard of living, but then once they tasted coffee many people just liked it and continued to drink it,' said Deep Singh Bandari, a social worker who is a regular visitor to the coffee cafes.
Most of the coffee drunk in Nepal is imported, but in the country's famous eastern tea-growing regions coffee plantations are springing up.
According to Nepal's National Tea and Coffee Development Board, about 400 tons of coffee was produced in fiscal year 2021-22, the most recent for which data is available. That's a drop in the percolator compared to the 26,000 tons of tea produced the same year, but the board predicts rapid growth.
'Both young and old people in Nepal just love coffee, and the number of coffee drinkers is growing every day. This trend is just going to grow,' said Pradhan.

VW's first EV is due for an upgrade, and segment leaders might be in for a surprise. Geopolitical challenges stunt BYD's growth in India Tesla opened its first Indian showroom earlier this month, and the automaker appears to have an opportunity to make up lost ground against Chinese rival BYD in the country's challenging but substantial market. BYD, and many other Chinese companies, have been unable to obtain visas for executives to work in India following a conflict over a disputed Himalayan border in 2020 between Indian and Chinese soldiers, Bloomberg reports. 0:06 / 0:09 Rivian R1T delivers on this EV feature that Tesla forgot Watch More This blockage has resulted in BYD conducting board meetings and other high-level interactions in Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Singapore, complicating on-site management, delaying responsiveness, and harming growth potential. Additionally, Ketsu Zhang, BYD's managing director for India, hasn't been able to obtain a work permit since leaving the company's local facility in Chennai. BYD's hurdles in India are compounded by the country rejecting its proposal to build a $1 billion local plant in 2023, which would be significantly larger than the automaker's current facility. Tesla touched down in India in mid-July, and BYD's operational challenges give Elon Musk's company a chance to establish more of a foothold in the market after its rival's head start, which included launching its first electric vehicle (EV) in the nation in 2022. Media inspect Tesla's Model Y during the inauguration of India's first Tesla showroom, in Mumbai — Source: Getty Tariffs shape Tesla's debut in India On July 15, Tesla launched its rear-wheel drive (RWD) Model Y in India at about $70,000. The automaker needs to price its Model Y significantly higher than in the U.S. ($44,990), since it faces high export duties ranging from 70% to 110%. Tesla is also exporting the Model Y into India from its China factory since its U.S. facilities don't manufacture right-hand drive vehicles. Since Tesla faces high tariffs from India and isn't considering building a facility in the country to get relief, its vehicles in the nation will be geared toward luxury buyers. Tesla opened its first showroom in Mumbai and has plans to launch a second showroom in Delhi next month. Despite operational challenges, BYD has increased its presence in India, so Tesla still has an uphill battle against its rival. BYD's sales during the first half of 2025 are approaching the total for all of 2024, and while its assembly footprint in India is limited, models like its Sealion 7 sell for around $11,000 less than Tesla's Model Y in the country. In 2023-2024, BYD's India market share stood at 1.9%, before increasing to 3.2% in 2024-2025. As of April 2025, BYD had 40 dealerships in India, up from 27 in September 2024. The Chinese EV giant's years-long headstart in India and ability to market lower-priced cars give it significant advantages in competing with Tesla, which might have resulted in a runaway race if its operational hurdles didn't exist. Still, while Tesla isn't currently considering an India plant, the chief minister of the western state of Maharashtra, home to the Indian commercial capital, said: 'In the future we wish to see [Tesla] R&D [research and development] and manufacturing done in India, and I am sure at an appropriate stage Tesla will think about it.' This apparent openness toward Tesla launching a large production facility would allow the automaker to succeed where BYD tried and failed in 2023 with its $1 billion rejection. 'Starbucks of China' has £1.50 drinks and fruit coffee — will it come to the UK?

There's no shortage of coffee chains to get your caffeine fix, from Starbucks and Costa, to Pret and Nero, to name just a few. But perhaps one of the biggest, is a brand you've never heard of. With a staggering 20,000 stores across the globe, Luckin Coffee, which hails from China, is looking to expand. The brand – which is already more popular than Starbucks in China, and has stores in Singapore and Malaysia – has just opened its doors in New York. And, there's rumours its setting its sights on the UK too. Founded in October 2017, Luckin offers signature drinks you won't find in your standard UK coffee shop: think coconut latte, orange americano, a velvet latte and Little Butter Latte. And, unlike your standard barista served coffee, they do things a little differently here. Here's everything you need to know about Luckin Coffee. Luckin overtook Starbucks as the largest coffee retailer in China back in 2023. What makes it different is its customer experience. You have to order drinks using the Luckin Coffee app, and pay on your phone, so there's no more waiting impatiently while the person in front fumbles with their cards. This makes it a very efficient operation, with customers on TikTok saying their whole experience took a maximum of five minutes. The app will also estimate your beverages time of arrival for you, sending a text when it's ready. The app also suggests personalised recommendations based on your order history, as well as dishing out exclusive deals and vouchers. With this, youget your caffeine fix keeping human interaction to a minimum. It's the opposite experience to Starbucks, which is planning to phase out its mobile-order-only US locations to give a more personal experience. Luckin Coffee is also giving you a serious first-time order discount, with £1.50 hot drinks available in the US as a promotional deal. In other stores they're being offered for as little as 75p. A simple iced black coffee will set you back about £3.74, while a more elaborate iced coconut latte will cost you £4.87. They're both pretty much what you'd expect. The menu typically scratches the same itch as the likes of Costa and Starbucks, but it does offer some more unusual offerings. Its bestseller of 2024 is the little butter latte, a coffee blended with butter for a 'smoother, creamier' experience. The chain's signature velvet latte is a little more confusing, claiming to have 'velvet-flavoured thick milk' which is meant to give your coffee a rich milky aroma. You can of course get a basic flat white or cappuccino too, or you can hop on the matcha hype with a matcha jasmine frappe or coconut matcha latte. What is perhaps most intriguing is its fruity americano range, including coffee with orange juice, pomelo juice, apple fizz or grape fizz. It's all on-trend, given that summer's unexpected refresher is the espresso lemonade. The menu is entirely drinks-based, which also sets it apart, meaning you simply grab your drink and go, unlike Starbucks where you could pick up a sandwich or cake. While there's no official news Luckin Coffee will come to the UK, we've done some snooping and it's looking promising. More Trending On July 22, Luckin Coffee Limited registered an office address in Basildon to run restaurants and cafes, take-away food shops, and mobile food stands. So if you're keen to give it a go, you might not have to fly to China or the Big Apple to have a taste. View More » Metro has reached out to Luckin Coffee for comment. Do you have a story to share? Arcade Food Hall is planning a third London site in Covent Garden

So long, TGI Fridays Covent Garden – and welcome to the third London food hall from global foodie hub Arcade. The food hall brand, which currently has outposts at Battersea Power Station and Tottenham Court Road (the latter pictured above) is opening its next outpost in Covvy G's old TGI's on Bedford Street. As revealed by Estates Gazette, Arcade Food Halls has submitted a planning application to Westminster City Council to open a venue at 6 Bedford Street and revamp the building's exterior, which was originally a 19th-century department story. It'll offer Arcade's usual worldwide selection of kitchens plus cocktails and music. The 13 vendors include family-run pizzeria Gracey's Pizza, Nepali street food Tipan Tapan, and southern Thai mezzanine restaurant Plaza Khao Gaeng. Arcade Food Hall originally opened at Tottenham Court Road in 2019. While that site closed during the pandemic, it was relaunched with backing from JKS Restaurants in 2022, and was followed by a second venue at Battersea Power Station in 2023. From Borough Market to Spitalfields, London is enjoying something of a food hall boom. Recently, it was announced that a major new net-zero carbon food hall will open near Tower Bridge, while more have opened at Market Halls Paddington, Market Place St Paul's and Kerb's Corner Corner at Canada Water. An application to convert the property at 6 Bedford Street into a pub was refused in February 2023 due to concerns about potential disturbances. Arcade's concept for a food hall is still in development, with planning permission not yet granted and no launch date set.
