The Jermain Defoe Rangers ploy that sealed Joe Aribo transfer as England hero reveals Ibrox star who left him gobsmacked

Former striker Defoe is convinced that he had crucial role in bringing Aribo to Ibrox
Jermain Defoe has revealed that it was his phone call that convinced Joe Aribo to sign for Rangers.
The former Premier League goal machine arrived in Govan in an initial 18-month loan deal from Bournemouth in January 2019, where he made an immediate impact for Steven Gerrard 's side, scoring eight goals in his first 20 matches.

That following summer, the Light Blues won the race to sign talented midfielder Aribo at the end of his contract with Charlton, after the future Nigeria and Southampton star reportedly turned down offers from elsewhere in the UK and in Europe to sign on at Ibrox.

And while Liverpool legend Gerrard made a big pitch to bring the playmaker to Glasgow, Defoe insists that it his conversation with Aribo that made all the difference.
Aribo went onto net seven times in the Premiership in the following season as Rangers lifted their 55th league title - stopping Celtic's quest for 10 in a row right in its tracks.
Asked in an interview with Open Goal about the players who impressed him at Rangers the most, he replied: "Joe Aribo.
"I remember speaking to Stevie (Gerrard) and he said: 'J, we need this Joe Aribo' so I said 'let me phone him.'
"I phoned him and said 'trust me, I'm telling you (that) you need to come to Rangers'. And he signed."
Defoe - who recently revealed to Record Sport that Conor Coady IS keen on a move to Rangers - was also blown away by Glen Kamara at Ibrox, who arrived from Dundee just weeks after he headed north of the border from Bournemouth.

"Glen Kamara was at Dundee but I knew he was at Arsenal when he was younger," he said. "In the first training session I shook hands with this kid and thought 'f****** h***, that was a tight grip'.
"But when the training started he took the ball on the back foot and had these hips.

"I then said to the gaffer "who is this kid? where has he been? No disrespect to Dundee and that but from what I saw in that training session, me, Tav (James Tavernier) and Connor (Goldson) were like 'wow, he is a player'.
"There were so many players who impressed me, Tav as well."

'Worries me' - Rio Ferdinand reveals concern over Man Utd's £69m transfer target

Rio Ferdinand says he would be 'worried' about Benjamin Sesko's lack of Premier League experience should he join Manchester United and would rather see the club prioritise a move for Ollie Watkins. United have bolstered Ruben Amorim's misfiring attack by bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo – from Wolves and Brentford respectively – for a combined transfer fee of over £133million this summer. But the Red Devils are determined to further strengthen with the addition of an out-and-out centre-forward before the transfer deadline following a disappointing season for both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee last term. Viktor Gyokeres had been identified as United's primary target on the back of another barnstorming campaign with Sporting, in which he scored 54 goals in 52 games, but the prolific Swede decided to turn down a switch to Old Trafford in favour of a move to Arsenal. Forced to go back to the drawing board and explore other avenues, the latest reports claim United have narrowed their search down to just two players, namely Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and RB Leipzig attacker Sesko. While Nicolas Jackson has also been tentatively linked in recent weeks, United are understood to have been put off by Chelsea's asking price and have now ruled out a bid to sign the Senegal international. Weighing up the pros and cons of United's potential options up front, Ferdinand said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel: 'If you get Watkins, you've got guaranteed 15-20 goals really and then you've got that with Cunha and you've got that with Mbeumo. 'Not completely guaranteed, but you've got double figures all the way up front. 'Bear in mind, we were 16th in terms of goals scored last season and these lot are getting you minimum 40 goals between them.' While Ferdinand is not writing off Sesko coming in and succeeding at the Theatre of Dreams, he believes the move would be far riskier than a deal for Watkins. Pointing to Hojlund's struggles since arriving in English football, Ferdinand said: 'The only difference is that Rasmus came in and had inexperience around him in terms of [Alejandro] Garnacho one side and Amad [Diallo] the other, for instance, most of the time. 'If Sesko comes in, he's got two players that have played Premier League, scored goals in the Premier League and backed up by Bruno [Fernandes] so I think it's a different dynamic that he comes into. 'But the uncertainty worries me a little bit. Can he adapt to this league?' Ferdinand continued: 'I wanted a striker with experience so he wouldn't be my first-choice, obviously, even now. 'But if Manchester United buy him and Newcastle go and get a number nine, does that mean [Alexander] Isak stays at Newcastle and Liverpool don't get Isak? 'Liverpool's transfer window has been nothing short of exceptional so far.' More Trending Ferdinand sypathises with United's current hierarchy, who he feels have been 'hampered by the past' when it comes to getting transfer deals over the line. 'They're hampered by the past,' the legendary ex-United and England defender went on. 'It's going to take time and it's one of the things [Omar] Berrada, Jason Wilcox and the manager will be really frustrated with, the goings on that happened before they got here are really hampering things in the recruitment area because of the high prices they've paid, the high wages they've paid. 'They've paid over the odds for most of these guys so it's difficult to move someone if he's on £200,000-a-week and his current value in the market is £100,000-a-week. Do you think he's going to go anywhere? I wouldn't.' Ex-Rangers striker Jermain Defoe has believes the Russell Martin's reported interest in Tottenham Hotspur teenager Mikey Moore could turn out to be the ideal move for both player and club, if they can get the deal over the line. The 17-year-old midfielder was linked with a potential loan switch to Rangers earlier this week, with reports claiming the Ibrox hierarchy were closing in on a move that would see the youngster arrive on a deal until the end of the season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Those rumours gained further traction when Thomas Frank opted to leave the teen out of the Spurs squad for their pre-season tour to Hong Kong and South Korea this week, with the Danish boss admitting: 'Mikey is a big talent, I'm really excited about his future here at Tottenham. I think for all players, but especially the younger players, they need to get that first-team consistent football into their bodies. If we can find the right option, we'll do that.' Jermain Defoe had successful spells at both Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur during his illustrious career. | Getty Images Part of the last Rangers squad to win the Scottish Premiership in 2021, Defoe scored 32 goals for the club during his three-season stay at Ibrox, but retired in March 2022 following a short stint with Sunderland and went on to become coach of Spurs' under-18 squad, where he managed Moore in the North London outfit's academy, and has given the youngster a glowing reference ahead of his potential move to Glasgow. 'Mikey Moore's an amazing young talent,' said Defoe. 'When I came into the academy, they said to me there's this young player that you need to see because he's the next best thing. As soon as I saw him, I thought he's got something special. He deserves the opportunities that he is getting right now, and we must remember, he's very young, only 17. 'He's still got time to improve and I don't think anyone has seen the best of Mikey Moore yet. Once he plays consistently and he gets that confidence and arrogance that he had in the youth team, then we'll see the best of Mikey, he is a top player.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The starlet, who turns 18 next month, featured sporadically under ex-Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou last season, and scored his first senior goal in a 3-0 win over Elfsborg on the way to his team's Europa League success. He is also officially the youngest player to play for Spurs in the English Premier League, making his debut against Manchester City in May 2024 at the age of 16 years and 277 days. 'I still speak to Mikey now,' said Defoe. 'He's someone that wants to improve, he's a nice kid. I was so happy when I saw him come on last season in Europe and get his first goal, and he gave me a little mention in the interview after which was brilliant. My advice to him would be to keep working hard, keep improving every day on your game and working on your game every single day.

Spurs assessing extent of Destiny Udogie and Kota Takai pre-season injuries

Left-back Udogie was withdrawn following the warm-up ahead of Spurs' friendly against Luton on Saturday, and then did not travel with the rest of the squad to Hong Kong for the week-long pre-season tour of Asia. Spurs face European champions Paris St Germain in the Super Cup on August 13 ahead of starting the new Premier League season at home to promoted Burnley. Frank, though, is likely to have to do without Italy international Udogie and revealed Japan defender Takai had picked up a foot issue. 'Destiny got a knee injury (in the warm-up at Luton on Saturday) that we are assessing at the moment, that has kept him out of this pre-season tour,' Frank said at a press conference in Hong Kong on Tuesday. 'Kota got a plantar fascia injury, unfortunately we don't know the scale of it – weeks.' The travelling squad for our pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Korea has been confirmed 📋 — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) July 27, 2025 There was, though, more positive news on England forward Dominic Solanke, who missed the Luton friendly with a minor ankle issue, but has made the trip to Asia. Spurs are preparing for Thursday's north London derby against Arsenal at the Kai Tak Stadium before heading to South Korea to play Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday. 'Dom is looking much better, progressing,' Frank told SPURSPLAY. 'We will see if it is too early for Arsenal, but we are positive about him. 'Madders (James Maddison) is looking better and better, could also be too early for Arsenal, again, we will see. Rodri (Rodrigo Bentancur) is back from illness, so that's good.' Former Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou had to deal with several injury setbacks last season, which saw their Premier League season tail off amid a successful Europa League campaign. Frank, though, feels there can only be so much done to try to mitigate against picking up more fitness problems down the line. 'I know about the injury issues, but it is a problem for every club in the world,' Frank said at a press conference. 'We have a good and long pre-season so we can push the players, we are aware how we want to train, we need to be aligned on how we want to play and train. 'There are gym sessions, recovery and the ability to compete in all tournaments. We are aware and we will make a few adjustments so we can compete.' A post shared by Son HeungMin(손흥민)🇰🇷 (@hm_son7) Frank again addressed issues over the future of captain Son Heung-min, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract and attracted interest from Los Angeles FC. 'Right now, Sonny is here and I'm very happy for that,' the Dane said. 'He has trained well. I said in the last press conference that he is showing great character. 'He played the last two friendlies. He is in the squad, he will train today (Tuesday). What I am focusing on is he is a Tottenham player.'
