Apple and Google face more UK antitrust scrutiny over mobile ecosystems
The plans announced on Wednesday follows findings by an inquiry group at Britain's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that a number of markets relating to mobile internet browsers were not working well for consumers or businesses.
Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome dominate the mobile browser market on iPhones and Android devices, respectively.
A strategic market status (SMS) designation allows the CMA to impose interventions on a firm, such as requiring it to adhere to specific behaviour so as not to undermine fair competition.
In Apple and Google's cases, they could be forced to offer more features and give users the option actively to choose their preferred mobile browser, if recommendations from the CMA's inquiry group are accepted.
Both Apple and Google pushed back against the CMA's proposals, with Google calling the step "disappointing and unwarranted."
"It is ... crucial that any new regulation is evidence-based, proportionate and does not become a roadblock to growth in the UK," Google's senior director for competition, Oliver Bethell, said.
Apple said separately it was concerned that the new rules being considered would undermine the privacy and security protections expected by its users.

Google partners with Italy's Energy Dome on zero-emission power supply
MILAN :Italian energy storage firm Energy Dome said on Friday it had entered a commercial partnership with Google to supply carbon-free energy to the grids that power the operations of the U.S. tech giant. As part of the agreement, Google has made a strategic investment in Milan-based Energy Dome, which has developed a CO2 battery technology to support the energy transition through long-duration energy storage solutions, the companies said in a joint statement. They did not disclose the financial details. Google joins other investors in the Italian energy storage firm such as Oman's sovereign wealth fund and global tank storage operator Vopak. Google's first commercial long-duration energy storage deal is part of a growing number of advanced energy technologies the group needs to hit a goal to run its operations on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. Energy Dome's CO2-based system stores energy by compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide, which is later expanded to generate electricity. The technology avoids the use of scarce raw materials such as lithium and copper, making it potentially attractive to European policymakers seeking to reduce reliance on critical minerals and bolster energy security. Energy Dome launched its first commercial-scale plant in Sardinia in 2022 with a view to completing it by the end of 2024, with a 24-hour cycle and a 20-megawatt capacity able to power 13,000-15,000 houses.

Dutch watchdog postpones ruling on Apple fees on dating apps, awaits EU action
PARIS :Dutch antitrust regulator ACM said in a statement on Friday it has postponed a ruling on Apple over fees the iPhone maker charges dating app providers as it awaits the outcome of ongoing discussions between Apple and the European Commission over a similar issue. Samsung pushes for diverse AI agents in Galaxy mobile devices
SAMSUNG Electronics is in talks with the likes of OpenAI and Perplexity AI to integrate more AI services in upcoming Galaxy devices, seeking a wider range of offerings beyond Google's Gemini. South Korea's largest company aims to give customers more options on its upcoming Galaxy S26 smartphone line next year, according to Choi Won Joon, president and chief operating officer of its mobile division. Samsung's current lineup features Alphabet's AI model, like much of the rest of the field of Android devices. 'We are talking to multiple vendors,' 54-year-old Choi said in an interview at Samsung's headquarters in Suwon. 'As long as these AI agents are competitive and can provide the best user experiences, we are open to any AI agent out there.' Samsung is nearing a deal to invest in Perplexity and integrate its app and assistant, Bloomberg News reported in June. Like archrival Apple, the Galaxy phone maker is looking to augment its own efforts at artificial intelligence with the best available from outside providers. For the recently released Galaxy Z Flip 7, Samsung used the Exynos chipset in a foldable for the first time. The company has sought to reduce reliance on Qualcomm and allay doubts about the efficiency and thermal performance of its Exynos line. Apple plans to introduce its first folding iPhone next year, which will be built around a similar design as Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold line and use many of the same core components, including foldable OLED screens sourced from Samsung Display, Bloomberg News reported. 'This is just the beginning of making these phones go mainstream,' Choi said about Samsung's latest generation introduced this summer. Another global company entering the category would be beneficial for the industry, he added. BLOOMBERG
