Unknown Mortal Orchestra Announce New EP ‘Curse'

Scoop28-05-2025
Unknown Mortal Orchestra announces a new EP CURSE, which is set for release on Wednesday, June 18th via Jagjaguwar. The announcement comes alongside the release of a new single and music video 'BOYS WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WOLVES.' The single encompasses so much of what has made Unknown Mortal Orchestra a source of intrigue since the project's enigmatic debut in 2011 - from spectral, experimental jamming to its metal-indebted earworm of a chorus. The song arrives with a Ruban Nielson -directed music video.
CURSE reflects these cursed times we find ourselves in. Taking inspiration from Italian horror films of the 1970s and 1980s, the six songs on the release are as cathartic a listen as the band has ever recorded. Featuring both abrasive riffs reminiscent of Black Sabbath on 'BOYS WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WOLVES' as well as the laid back, intricate guitar playing UMO is maybe most famous for on 'DEATH COMES FROM THE SKY', the CURSE EP is the perfect soundtrack to your next confrontation with the void.
In defining what CURSE contends with thematically, Nielson shares:
"In the hearts of men there are sometimes goodnesses hidden but substantial, which would be the difference in times of woe between finding oneself at the mercy of a monster or a more heroic creature.
For the sake of sanity we can fool ourselves into believing these silver slivers of morality are visible from the outside, even when we know they aren't. And anyway, so much of what we believe we can see from the outside is a mirage, especially these days.
In the clownish, happy-go-lucky soil of lies and chaos, a silly kind of music can grow; a senseless laughter, and we can amuse ourselves with it, however darkly. We can dance with lost minds and howl in valiant hysteria as the stormtroopers of death, confused and incredulous, pile us or those we love into their meat wagons."
The EP closely follows Unknown Mortal Orchestra's IC-02 Bogotá, which was just released this past March.

Ozzy Osbourne dies aged 76

Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy Osbourne, frontman of 1970s heavy metal band Black Sabbath, earned his infamy biting the head off a bat on stage and pursuing a drug-fuelled lifestyle before reinventing himself as a loveable if often foul-mouthed reality TV star. Known to fans as "The Prince of Darkness" and the "Godfather of Heavy Metal," Osbourne has died at the age of 76, his family said in a statement on Tuesday. "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love," they said. Osbourne kicked off his career in the early 1970s as singer on Black Sabbath's hits, from "Paranoid" to "War Pigs" to "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". Those plus a string of solo releases saw him sell more than 100 million records worldwide. The hard riffs and dark subject matter - from depression to war to apocalypse - combined with an instinct for Halloween theatrics. As a performer, Osbourne sprinkled audiences with raw meat and, in 1982, had his encounter with a bat thrown on stage by a fan. He always insisted he thought it was a toy until he bit into it, realised his mistake and rushed to hospital for a rabies shot. He later sold branded bat soft toys with a removable head. Osbourne was a regular target for conservative and religious groups concerned about the negative impact of rock music on young people. He acknowledged the excesses of his lifestyle and lyrics - but poured scorn on the wilder reports that he was an actual devil-worshipper. "I've done some bad things in my time. But I ain't the devil. I'm just John Osbourne: a working-class kid from Aston who quit his job in the factory and went looking for a good time," he said in a 2010 biography. REALITY SHOW STAR John Michael Osbourne was the fourth of six children. Growing up in Aston, Birmingham, in central England, he struggled with dyslexia, left school at age 15, did a series of menial jobs, and at one point served a brief prison sentence for burglary. Then came Black Sabbath. "When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of 60, with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and California, I wouldn't have put money on me, no fucking way," he once said. Britain's Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, a member of parliament representing a Birmingham constituency, wrote on X that she was devastated to hear the news of his death. "One of the greatest gifts my city gave the world," Mahmood said. In 2002, Osbourne won legions of new fans when he starred in U.S. reality TV show "The Osbournes". Cameras followed the aging rock god ambling round his huge house in Beverly Hills, pronouncing on events in his heavy Birmingham accent and looking on bemused at the antics of his family. Osbourne's family included wife and manager Sharon, five children including Jack, Kelly and Aimee, and several grandchildren. No cause of death was given, but Osbourne revealed in 2020 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The illness made him unable to walk. In his final concert on July 5 in Birmingham, Osbourne performed sitting, at times appearing to have difficulties speaking as he thanked thousands of adoring fans, some of whom were visibly emotional. Osbourne's performance followed a number of tributes on stage and on stadium screens from rock and pop royalty including Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Metallica's James Hetfield and Elton John. "Thanks for your support over the years. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you," said Osbourne.

Just two weeks ago, Osbourne brought down the curtain on his stellar career with Black Sabbath on 6 July, rattling through the band's most iconic songs in front of an adoring hometown crowd in Birmingham, in England. The 'Prince of Darkness' held court from a giant leather throne, topped with a bat, at Villa Park stadium, firstly in a five-song solo set and then with his original bandmates for the first time in 20 years, and also last time. The stadium in Birmingham, central England, is a stone's throw from where the band formed 57 years ago, pioneering the hard-rock style that gave rise to heavy metal. Many thousands around the world followed the concert online after tickets for the show sold out in just 16 minutes. Black Sabbath, the band Ozzy Osbourne founded more than half a century ago.
