Beloved Italian restaurant chain abruptly shuts 30% of locations

Daily Mail30-04-2025
A family-favorite restaurant has closed a group of stores after filing its third bankruptcy in five years. Bertucci's, the Massachusetts-based Italian restaurant chain known for its brick oven pizzas and family-friendly atmosphere, has closed nearly a third of its stores across the state.
The company recently shut down four locations — in Braintree, Mansfield, North Andover, and Norwood — according to updates on its website, dwindling its state-wide headcount from 14 to 10. It just won the People's Choice Award at the 2024 Boston Pizza Festival. But several restaurants encountered financial stress after the company took home the prize. 'Thank you for your loyalty and support all these years,' a notice hanging outside of the restaurant's former Braintree location says, and pointed diners toward still-operating locations in Hingham and West Roxbury.
The closures mark another chapter in a turbulent stretch for Bertucci's, which has now filed for bankruptcy three times in just five years. Bertucci's first entered bankruptcy in 2018, slashing its footprint in half from 56 restaurants down to 28. A second filing came in 2022, after pandemic supply chain disruptions squeezed operations.
This year, Bertucci's filed for bankruptcy a third time. Just fifteen locations remain, with a smattering of restaurants in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. This isn't the end for the chain. It opened a fast-casual offshoot of the famous pizza shop called Bertucci's Pronto in Boston earlier this month. 'The Bertucci's you know and love is here to stay as well, just with a few less locations for now,' the company said. In its bankruptcy filing, the company pinned the health of its business on the success of the new platform. It also said remaining stores remain profitable. But for the closing locations, the restaurant chain cited rising costs, lower consumer confidence, and a tougher economy for its latest collapse.
'On April 24, 2025, Bertucci's filed bankruptcy with the goal of promptly reorganizing its business for a sustainable and successful future,' the company wrote in the filing. 'Consistent with numerous other recent restaurant brand bankruptcies, consumer demand has shifted away from legacy casual-dining brands.' Bertucci's bankruptcy tracks closely with a broader shakeout in the sector. Multiple casual dining brands — including Red Lobster, Hooters , TGI Fridays , On The Border , and Roti — have all filed for bankruptcy in the past year.
Meanwhile, other restaurant staples, like Denny's, Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse, and Cracker Barrel have all reported shrinking sales estimates at the start of 2025. Chains are facing two main issues: their costs to operate keep increasing, while inflation-stressed middle-income consumers are cutting back on restaurant spending. To confront the financial strain, multiple chains have rolled out fast-casual spinoffs of their menus.
Golden Corral and Perkins both launched scaled back versions of their restaurants to entice value-seeking diners. The initial response to the fast-casual rollouts has been mixed. Bloomin' Brands, the parent company of Outback Steakhouse, has already scaled down its remodeling efforts .

Welsh AI Firm Launches Platform to Cut Waste and Boost UK Steel Industry

A Cardiff firm has launched an AI-powered platform designed to help steel manufacturers to reduce waste, lower carbon emissions and improve production efficiency. from Nightingale HQ (NHQ), is purpose-built for the reinforcement steel industry and has already worked with manufacturers such as Midland Steel to use digital tools to address practical, day-to-day challenges such as automating data extraction, optimising reinforcing bar (rebar) production planning, and monitoring environmental impact. The firm said the launch comes at a critical time for the industry, aligning with the UK Government's newly announced £725 billion infrastructure investment strategy. The strategy, which emphasises large-scale public infrastructure development, is underpinned by digital innovation and a strong commitment to achieving net zero. In line with the UK strategy, the Wales-made platform can impact the wider UK market by finding waste-cutting opportunities beyond the ability of human effort, helping manufacturers increase revenue and save tonnes of steel from scrap, the firm said. Steph Locke, Head of Product for NHQ, said the new platform would bridge the gap in the sector, helping manufacturers leverage AI to increase competitiveness. Steph said: 'For us as a Wales-based tech scale-up, we're excited about the opportunity to support local steelmakers during this transformative time. Investment in Tata Steel's transition to electric arc furnace technology at Port Talbot represents a major turning point for the sector and opens up long-term opportunities to apply new technologies to old challenges. 'Looking wider, under the UK's new Infrastructure Strategy, steelmakers will face increased pressure to be more efficient and sustainable, yet the majority lack the digital tools required to meet these expectations. Major projects such as the Sizewell C nuclear power stations and offshore wind expansion will require millions of tonnes of rebar so efficiency isn't just environmentally responsible, it's economically essential. 'That's why we feel now is the perfect time to officially launch which can deliver powerful, no-code AI directly to production teams without expensive software or technical expertise. We're already working with some of the biggest manufacturers in Europe, and our ambition is to have a wide-reaching impact on the UK steel industry.' Globally, the rebar market is set to reach £325 billion by 2031, driven by infrastructure growth and government investment. At the same time, ongoing UK/US tariff uncertainty highlights the importance of innovation and cost-efficiency for maintaining competitiveness.

Brian Maule embraces new challenges after restaurant closure

Taking place in May this year, the first of the events at Glaschu on Royal Exchange Square saw Maule collaborate with the venue's head chef, Graeme Brown, for a five-course tasting menu that marries a touch of French flair with the best of local produce. After tickets sold out in 'record time', the chefs were inspired to join forces once more, with two further dinners set to take place on Wednesday, August 6 and Thursday, August 7. Pictured: Chef Brian Maule returns to Glaschu for two exclusive dinner events this week (Image: Supplied) "I am absolutely delighted to be back at one of my favourite restaurants in the city to showcase some of Scotland's finest summer produce," Maule said of the upcoming events. "The last two were very successful, and it was so nice to see so many familiar faces of people who have followed me over the last 20 or so years. "There's a great atmosphere at these nights and we keep it professional, but relaxed. "I come out to talk about the menu, then we have the guy from the wine company we partner with do the same with the drinks. "It works really well, and there's a wee bit of an educational element to it without going too in depth." Previously he had taken on a new role with Ayrshire-based hospitality group, Buzzworks, as he sought to pass on his skills to a new generation of culinary talent in Scotland. Though this contract has recently come to an end, consultancy work and collaborations with restaurants such as Glaschu mean that the chef is still rarely far away from professional kitchens. 'I've been really busy this past year, and working with various companies has meant that no two days have been the same. 'I get to go around different kitchens and meet new people, from chefs to owners, which is great. 'I'm still learning how best to deal with the individual needs of each business, but I'm enjoying that challenge and always looking out for the next opportunity.' Pictured: Maule has said he is 'absolutely delighted' to join forces with the team at Glaschu for a second time (Image: Supplied) Asked how his current work differs from more than two decades at the helm of his own restaurant, Le Chardon d'Or, before its shock closure in 2023, Maule said: 'Obviously, my own place will always be at the back of my mind, even though it's not there anymore. 'I miss it, but with the difficulties our industry has been facing at the moment, the past year has been far less stressful than the few prior. "I'm enjoying doing something different." Those attending this week's wine dinners at Glaschu will enjoy a menu that draws inspiration from some of Maule's favourite creations at Le Chardon d'Or, with dishes such as confit chicken bon bon, marinated cured salmon fillet, ragu of king prawns and Venison Wellington. Pictured: Glaschu's head chef, Graeme Brown (Image: Supplied) 'I have always admired Brian, and we've had a lot of fun with the menu development for the May events,' Glaschu's head chef Graeme Brown said of their joint effort to create the five-course tasting experience. 'We can't wait to share an unforgettable experience with our guests, filled with exceptional flavours, creativity, and great company.' Marshall Bass, territory manager from Enotria & Coe, Glaschu's wine partner, added: 'I am delighted and tremendously honoured to be a part of this event with Brian and Glaschu for a third and fourth time. 'The menu looks fantastic, as expected, and I am relishing the opportunity to don my sommelier cap again. 'The combination of Brian's culinary jewels with some of Enotria's top wine offerings, set in Glaschu's idyllic dining room, should make for an unforgettable night." Glaschu is located at 32 Royal Exchange Square in Glasgow. For further updates on upcoming events, visit
