For more than 30 years he combined great charm with a tough, no- nonsense approach.
He had a ready turn of phrase, dubbing one particularly stubborn Russian leader as 'the abominable NO man'.
Vic also noted with wry amusement how a faith healer summoned to cure an injured England footballer prepared by dousing her hotel breakfast cereal in neat vodka.
'Needless to say he didn't make the World Cup,' he laughed.
Tributes to Vic were led yesterday by two former Sun editors.
Kelvin MacKenzie said: 'Vic was a star.
"An example of huge talent meeting hard work.
"The success of the Sun was built on a team of reporters off which Vic was a shining light.'
Stuart Higgins added: 'Vic was a rare breed of reporter, dogged, generous and unruffled."
Colleague George Hollingbery said: 'He was the complete reporter.'

Thousands turn out in Norwich for Pride march

Crystal, who came sixth in the UK version of the TV show, held a Q&A session and performed as part of the event."I have done a lot of smaller Prides, and it is always my favourite thing," they said."It really reminds you of how important Pride still is."The city's first Pride event took place in 2009 and Norwich Pride became a registered charity in 2020. River, from Norfolk, said Pride for him meant "self-expression".The 25-year-old, who does drag, said: "Norwich is definitely more queer-populated especially than where I live."It is unfortunate when you leave Pride, you still see hate crime and cat-calling and things like that."I feel as a whole we all kind of stick up for each other."Blaz, also from Norfolk, added: "The community really sticks up for each other."Everyone makes their own little safe circle."There were about 120 stalls in six different locations, including at The Forum, Theatre Street and Chapelfield Gardens. Tracey Slater works for the SOS Bus Norwich, which provides a safe haven for people in distress on a night said the charity wanted people to feel safe when they visited its hub on Prince of Wales Road."For us coming to this event, it is to show people we are supporters of this community, and we are not going to judge," she said."Hopefully, they will then feel safe enough to come to us."The march left City Hall at about 13:00 BST before finishing at Chapelfield events were cut short due to heavy rain, including live music outside the Forum, a volunteer for the event said. Holly Willoughby shows off her incredible figure in a rare bikini selfie as she shows her support for Oasis ahead of their second Wembley gig
Holly Willoughby turned heads as she posted a rare bikini snap on Saturday along with a message for Oasis fans ahead of the bands second gig at Wembley. In the black-and-white photo, the mum-of-three, 44, sizzled in a strapless bikini that highlighted her toned figure. Wearing a bright smile and an Adidas bucket hat, Holly gave a subtle nod to the legendary band. Posing in a garden, she captioned the post: 'When you're not in Wembley but your head is… have fun tonight if you're lucky enough to be going.' Oasis made a long-awaited return to London on Friday, playing their first gig in the city in over 16 years. Following a series of homecoming shows at Manchester's Heaton Park, the rock legends, fronted by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, took to the stage at Wembley Stadium. With five nights scheduled, the band shared door and stage times on their Instagram, providing fans with an hour-by-hour breakdown. Gates open at 5pm, followed by support acts Cast at 6pm and singer Richard Ashcroft at 7pm. Oasis then headline with a two-hour set starting at 8:15pm. The band kicked off their Oasis Live '25 world tour on July 4 at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, earning five-star reviews from The Guardian, The Telegraph, and The Times. The group has also dominated the UK album charts, with three top five albums, according to the Official Charts Company. While fans were excited at the reunion, some were outraged after some standard tickets in the UK and Ireland jumped from £148 to £355. The controversy prompted the Government and the UK's competition watchdog to pledge to look at the use of dynamic pricing. After their final London gig on August 3, the group will move north to Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium before performing at Dublin's Croke Park. The band will then head to Japan, South Korea, South America, Australia and North America. The band will then head to Japan, South Korea, South America, Australia and North America. Formed in Manchester in 1991, the band was led by lead guitarist Noel and lead vocalist Liam during their 18 years together. Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993, rising to fame with the release of their debut chart-topping album Definitely Maybe on August 29 1994. They had hits with songs including Don't Look Back In Anger, Champagne Supernova, Wonderwall and Live Forever. Dig Out Your Soul, the band's last studio album, was released in 2008, just months before the Paris row.
