Perlis MB's defeat in party polls exposes rift within Pas, says Mahfuz
Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said the outcome of the Arau and Padang Besar Pas elections signalled more than just the rejection of one leader, but it was also a damning verdict from the party's rank-and-file.
"This is not just about the defeat of an individual or his team. It is also a clear sign that the party's grassroots no longer have confidence in the leadership of Pas and the Perlis state government under Shukri," he said in a statement today.
Mahfuz, who was once a Pas vice-president, added that the internal rift has grown too glaring to ignore and warned that the prolonged power struggle was robbing Perlis people of a stable and decisive administration.
"The people of Perlis are watching this crisis unfold. The top Pas leadership remains silent and has failed to take any constructive action, even though criticisms of the Menteri Besar's weaknesses have been raised repeatedly, including at Pas' own Muktamar," he said.
Mahfuz took a swipe at Pas Youth for its selective activism, questioning why there were no calls for a "Turun Shukri" rally when the same group was eager to stage protests demanding Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's resignation.
"The question now is on how long will Pas leaders ignore the voice and concerns of their own grassroots? How long must the people of Perlis suffer in this drawn-out internal feud?
He cautioned that the state government's credibility was crumbling amid inconsistent decision-making and a glaring lack of direction, leaving the people in limbo.
"Political stability is the bedrock of the people's well-being. When the ruling party fails to manage its own conflicts, the people pay the price," he said.
Mahfuz urged Pas to stop politicking among themselves and start listening to the rakyat and party members.
"If they can no longer lead with integrity and fairness, they should step aside and return the mandate to the people. The people of Perlis deserve leadership that is stable, caring and accountable," he said.
In an unexpected outcome during the party's election, Shukri, was unsuccessful in his attempt to unseat the incumbent Arau Pas chief Solahudin Azmi.
Shukri only collected 43 votes, trailing far behind Solahudin who managed 128 votes.

Hadi's son-in-law demands apology from Sim
PAS leader Zaharudin Muhammad has initiated legal action against Human Resources Minister Steven Sim for allegedly slandering him. This was in regard to a statement made by Sim last week, where the DAP deputy secretary-general criticised Zaharudin's controversial remarks about the promotion of the army's first Chinese lieutenant general.

Office closed when delivering defamation letter of demand? Well, I was attending grandpa's funeral, Steven Sim tells PAS man
BUKIT MERTAJAM, July 4 — Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong has accused a PAS leader of attempting to politicise his absence from his service centre yesterday, claiming it was a deliberate move to paint the centre as non-operational. Sim said there was already a notice saying the centre was closed for the whole day yesterday — which he explained due to the passing of his grandfather, whose funeral was held that day and attended by his staff. 'While my family was grieving the loss of our beloved grandfather, this PAS leader saw fit to exploit the situation for political gain,' he posted on Facebook, referring to Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad. Sim said otherwise his doors are always open to the constituency regardless of the racial, religious or political background — with even PAS members coming to seek assistance. 'We had already put up a notice informing the public that the service centre would be closed on July 3. The notice even included four contact numbers in case of emergencies. 'So, either the PAS leader couldn't read Malay, or he was deliberately attempting to create a malicious perception,' he suggested. Zaharudin, who is the son-in-law of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, said yesterday that he had attempted to serve a letter of demand to Sim for alleged defamation. Zaharudin is reportedly seeking RM1.5 million in damages over Sim's remark against him over the promotion of a Chinese officer in the Malaysian Armed Forces. Sim said that regardless, no such letter was found at his office even this morning, and welcomed Zaharudin to settle the matter in court, attaching a Malay pantun as a response. Last week, Sim had stood firm on his accusations against Zaharudin, whom he had called racist for a remark on Malaysian Armed Forces lieutenant-general Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng. Lim's promotion had marked a historic milestone, as he became the first ethnic Chinese officer to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general in the armed forces. In response, Zaharudin had speculated that Malaysia's 50th prime minister in 2058 could be a Chinese individual, framing the scenario as a possible outcome of Lim's promotion. The post, which also compared the Malaysia's immigration policies to the Zionist settlement of Palestine, was then deleted. Islamist party PAS has since said it does not support the social media post by one of its leaders on the promotion, saying it was the personal opinion of the individual involved and 'entirely contrary' to PAS' policies and values.

Zaharudin serves Sim legal notice, threatens RM1.5 million defamation suit
Published on: Friday, July 04, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 04, 2025 By: Faiz Zainudin, FMT Text Size: DAP deputy secretary-general Steven Sim said last week that he was ready to face Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad in court. PETALING JAYA: Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad has served a letter of demand on Steven Sim following criticism by the DAP deputy secretary-general over a Facebook post related to the promotion of a Chinese officer in the armed forces. In the letter dated July 3, issued by legal firm Nur Maidin & Co, Zaharudin demanded that Sim retract his allegedly defamatory remarks and issue a public apology, failing which he said the DAP leader would be sued for RM1.5 million. Advertisement 'Our client hereby demands the sum of RM1.5 million as fair and just compensation for your defamatory statements. 'Our client demands that you comply with the remedial actions immediately and in any event, no later than seven days from the date of this letter,' the lawyers said. Sim said last Thursday that he was ready to go to court to defend his criticism of Zaharudin, who described the comments by the human resources minister on his Facebook post as prejudicial. In his post, Zaharudin had speculated that Malaysia could see its first prime minister of Chinese descent in the next 30 to 40 years. Zaharudin, the son-in-law of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, also uploaded a screenshot of a news report about Johnny Lim's promotion which he said was only for illustrative purposes. The post, which was subsequently deleted, prompted accusations of racism from several quarters and criticism, including from Zaharudin's own party. Sim was among those who had called for Zaharudin to be investigated. He accused Zaharudin of fanning racial sentiments and said that he had merely spoken out against racism when criticising him. Zaharudin said he travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Sim's parliamentary service centre in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, yesterday to personally deliver the letter of demand, but was unable to do so as the office was closed. 'I went to the Bukit Mertajam MP's service centre but unfortunately, no one was there. 'He (Sim) accused me of insulting the armed forces, of being racist, and more. I've sent the letter and am now awaiting his public apology. My lawyer will also follow up by sending it via email,' he told FMT. Zaharudin also challenged Sim to a public debate on the Malaysia My Second Home programme, which he said was the actual issue he had intended to raise – not the alleged questioning of the Chinese lieutenant-general's promotion. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
