'Just one more to go now': Ricky Ponting backs Joe Root to surpass Sachin Tendulkar's all-time Test runs record
Australia legend Ricky Ponting has thrown his weight behind
Joe Root
to eventually eclipse
Sachin Tendulkar
as the leading run-scorer in Test history, calling the England batter's recent feat "a magnificent moment in history."
Root dazzled at Old Trafford, scoring a sublime 150 against India in the fourth Test of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. With that innings, Root moved past
Rahul Dravid
, Jacques Kallis, and finally Ponting himself to become the second-highest run-getter in Test history.

Root now has 13,409 runs from 157 Tests, only behind Tendulkar's iconic 15,921. The crowd at Old Trafford gave the 34-year-old a standing ovation as he went past Ponting's tally of 13,378.

Ponting, who was on-air for Sky Sports, was glowing in his praise: "Congratulations Joe Root. A magnificent moment in history. Second on the table. Just the one more to go now. About two-and-a-half-thousand runs behind, but the way his career's gone over the last four or five years there's absolutely no reason why he can't be number one."
Poll
Will Joe Root surpass Sachin Tendulkar as the leading run-scorer in Test history?
Yes, definitely!
No, Tendulkar's record is too high.
The former Australia skipper emphasised Root's incredible form post-30, noting: "To score 25 Test hundreds after turning 30 says everything about his mental capacity.

He still has that hunger and desire to improve. That doesn't get easier with age, but Root makes it look effortless."
Ponting also highlighted how Root's batting remains unaffected by personal milestones: "He's not someone obsessed with stats or numbers. Like most of us, when you're playing, it's about winning matches. But when he eventually retires, he'll look back and be immensely proud. The volume, the consistency — it's remarkable."
He further added context from his own career: "I didn't even know how many runs I had when I finished. That wasn't what motivated me, and it's clear it's the same for Joe. But it's still a legacy. And if he keeps averaging 85 runs a game like he has, and plays another 20–30 Tests, then that Tendulkar mark is within reach."
Root's latest hundred — his 38th in Tests — also puts him level with Kumar Sangakkara in the all-time hundreds list. England, leading the series 2-1, are in a commanding position, and Root's masterclass might prove decisive again.

Rishabh Pant Ruled Out Of India-England Test Series, Confirms Head Coach Gambhir
Last Updated: Rishabh Pant has been officially ruled out of the India-England Test series, head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed after the Manchester Test. Head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed on Sunday (July 27) that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the remainder of the India-England Test series. Pant suffered a metatarsal fracture after being hit on the foot by a Chris Woakes yorker while batting on the first day of the fourth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test. He was taken to the hospital and was reportedly advised six weeks of rest, though he came out to bat on the second day and scored 16 runs too. The Test ended in a draw, thanks to valiant centuries from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who helped India overcome the 311-run first innings lead, forcing the hosts to accept a draw an hour before Stumps on Day 5. 'Rishabh is already out of the series," Gambhir said in the post-match press conference. 'I want to say that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something that Rishabh Pant did for the team and for the country as well. Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot. Not many people have done that in the past, and he put his hand up, and that is why I say any amount of praise, I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations to come forward will talk about this, and the generations coming forward should talk about it," he added. India coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed Pant's injury for the first time after the visitors salvaged a draw in the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday. Pant retired hurt on Day 1 when he was taken off the field on a cart with his foot badly swollen, but he returned—limping—on Day 2 to reach a half-century. Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai 'It's been declared that he's out of the series, and one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on something Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well,' Gambhir said. 'Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially for batting with a broken foot. 'I think the generations to come will talk about it, and the generations coming forward should talk about it.' Pant was injured while attempting a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes, and the ball deflected onto his right ankle and foot. India did not confirm the extent of the injury at the time, but he was replaced as wicketkeeper by Dhruv Jurel for the remainder of the match.
