NHRC takes suo motu cognisance of brutal attack on journalist in Odisha
New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports detailing the brutal assault of a TV journalist while he was covering alleged corruption at a construction site in Kulthipali village in Balangir district on May 25.
According to media reports, the journalist was suddenly ambushed by a group of individuals while documenting the site, where locals had raised corruption allegations.
The attackers reportedly tied his hands and legs, paraded him through the village, and later bound him to a pole before subjecting him to a ruthless beating.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, the NHRC stated that if the allegations are true, they constitute a severe violation of human rights.
Consequently, the Commission has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Odisha, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
Further reports indicate that the perpetrators also destroyed the journalist's mobile phones and video camera, threatening him against publicising details of the incident or the alleged irregularities at the construction site.
According to reports, Bijay Pradhan, a journalist from a privately-owned Odia-language news outlet, was recently tied up and brutally beaten by a group of men while investigating alleged corruption at a construction site in Kulthipali village, Bolangir district.
A widely circulated video on social media shows Pradhan being kicked and dragged by his attackers.
The assault, which lasted for two hours, resulted in a ruptured eardrum, and he is currently receiving treatment at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital.
Pradhan further stated that the assailants forcibly took his mobile phone, which contained footage of the incident, along with his microphone and other reporting equipment--an apparent attempt to prevent him from covering the story. (ANI)

Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today ordered a high-level administrative inquiry, headed by the Development Commissioner, into the stampede at Saradhabali near the Gundicha Temple in Puri, which claimed the lives of three devotees and left seven others injured. In immediate administrative action, the Puri District Collector and Superintendent of Police were transferred. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bishnu Pati and OSAP Commandant Ajay Padhi were suspended for their roles in the incident. Expressing deep sorrow and grief over the tragedy, the Chief Minister extended a personal apology and an apology on behalf of the state government to all Jagannath devotees. He also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced a compensation of Rs.25 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased. Majhi said that the Rath Yatra of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath in Puri is world-renowned, attracting lakhs of devotees who come with immense devotion and excitement to witness the divine darshan of the Lord at Saradhabali. 'However, due to the overwhelming crowd and intense excitement, three devotees unfortunately lost their lives,' the Chief Minister said. The Chief Minister reiterated that a thorough administrative inquiry has been ordered, to be conducted by the Development Commissioner. Additionally, Chanchal Rana has been appointed as the new District Magistrate of Puri, while Pinak Mishra will take charge as the new Superintendent of Police. DCP Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty. Majhi asserted, 'Mahaprabhu's Rath Yatra is the pride and glory of our Odia heritage. Bangladesh Police arrest 5 accused for raping Hindu woman, circulating victim's video
Dhaka [Bangladesh], June 29 (ANI): Bangladesh Police have arrested five people accused of raping a Hindu woman in a remote village of Comilla district and circulating her video on social media. A video that has gone viral on social media shows a naked woman pleading for the protection of her dignity. 'On June 26, Fajr Ali Fajr (36), father - Shahid Mia, of Ramchadrapur Panchkitta village under Muradnagar police station of Comilla district, was detained and beaten by the people of the area on charges of raping the wife of an expatriate from the same village,' Police said in a statement. 'Later, the injured Fajr Ali fled from there. Some people present at the scene immediately recorded a video of the victim and spread it on social media,' it added. 'A case has been registered at Muradnagar Police Station in this regard. The police have arrested the accused Fajr Ali and four others who captured the video,' the statement said. Legal action is being taken against the five individuals who were arrested, police said. Earlier on May 31, a human chain and protest march was organised by various organisations in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka to protest the violence and torture being perpetrated against religious minorities and ethnic communities across Bangladesh, Sammilita Sanatan Parishad, a minority alliance, said in a statement. Addressing a weekly media briefing in New Delhi on June 27, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the interim government has to protect Hindus and other minorities. Jaiswal, while speaking in the context of damage to Durga Temple, said, 'Let me underline that it is the responsibility of the interim government of Bangladesh to protect Hindus, their properties, and religious institutions.' Earlier on May 16, thousands of Bangladeshi women's rights activists gathered at Manik Mia Avenue near the Parliament building in Dhaka to demand equal rights and dignity for women. The rally, held under the slogan 'A march of solidarity at the call of women' (Nariya Dake Maitri Yatra), aimed to protest against attempts to deprive women of their rights in the name of religion. Puri Stampede: Odisha DGP Khurania says investigation underway
Puri (Odisha) [India], June 29 (ANI): Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania said an investigation has been initiated into the Sunday morning stampede in Puri during the Jagannath Rath Yatra in which at least three people died and several others sustained injuries were cli, claiming three lives, is being investigated. He added that this year the number of devotees is more than in previous years. 'As you can see, a large number of devotees have gathered, and a large number of people are coming. This is more than in previous years. The incident that happened in the morning is being investigated. All the facts will come out as to why this happened,' DGP Khurania told ANI. The mishap took place early this morning near the Gundicha Temple in Puri. Earlier, speaking to ANI over the phone, Odisha Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan said that the state DGP has been sent to the site of the incident. Harichandan said, 'It is an unfortunate incident. We are taking note of that. I spoke with the CM this morning. We are taking stringent action. DGP has been sent to the spot.' District Magistrate Siddharth Swain told reporters, '... Today, 15 devotees were shifted to the district headquarters hospital, from 4.20 am to 5.40 am. Twelve of them were discharged after preliminary treatment. The postmortem of the three deceased is underway. The reason for the death will be cleared after that...' During the annual Rath Yatra, a massive crowd of devotees pull the holy chariots of the three deities - Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Shubhadra, which are taken to the Gundicha Temple, a short distance from the Jagannath Temple. The three deities spend a week at the Gundicha Temple before returning to Jagannath Temple. This year, the Rath Yatra commenced on Friday. (ANI)
