Dr. Phil's Anti-Woke News Channel Went Bankrupt. His Next Platform Is Even More Doomed
Envoy, much like Merit Street, will be anchored by original programming starring Dr. Phil and Steve Harvey. It'll also include a library of content (Merit Street had a whole back catalogue of Harvey's talk show and Nancy Grace's 'Crime Stories,' so keep an eye out for those). An Envoy television channel is expected to launch later this month, per Bloomberg.
But the real hook is a feature that will let 'citizen journalists' upload their own content to the platform. According to the company, it'll give people the chance to 'share news and stories from their communities while seamlessly integrating curated user-generated content on a national scale.' The details on how that'll work are sparse at this stage, but it surely won't lead to terrible outcomes.
The citizen journalist schtick has been tried ad infinitum in the social media era. There is a graveyard full of efforts to create a platform built around such content. Arguably, platforms like Substack and Medium have come the closest to creating something sustainable around such a thing, but even those are dominated more by professional, independent journalists rather than your average Joe. If anything, the YouTubes and Twitters of the world have proven the most effective way to turn a local story into a national one. But who knows, maybe Envoy will crack the code on curating citizen reporting. It's not like Dr. Phil has a history of running with dubious claims for the sake of content or anything.
If there is any reason to believe that Envoy Media will be a success, you won't find it by looking at Dr. Phil's last venture. The streaming option launched in 2024 with a linear cable app and streaming options. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the channel averaged 27,000 viewers during its first year of operation, which is…bad. Its short run through 2025 saw those figures drop to 17,000 viewers, which, if you're keeping score, is worse. Even the channel's YouTube channel languished, despite Dr. Phil having a pretty robust presence on the platform. Merit Media has under 90,000 subscribers, and its most recent videos have barely cracked 1,000 views. Not exactly the kind of audience that warrants its own standalone service, but hey, it ain't my money.

Google may be removing its iconic 'G' logo from Messages (APK teardown)
Adamya Sharma / Android Authority TL;DR The Google Messages app could be getting a branding tweak that removes the famous 'G' logo. It seems that the company plans to use the full 'Google' wordmark in the app's header going forward. The new Google Messages branding seems to be consistent with other Google apps, such as Photos, Calendar, Drive, and more. Google is constantly making subtle changes to the look and feel of its core apps, and we've discovered that Google Messages may be in line for a minor but notable branding tweak. While digging around in the latest Google Messages beta version, we found that the app is experimenting with a branding update in its header that aligns with branding seen across many other Google apps. Authority Insights story on Android Authority. Discover You're reading anstory on Android Authority. Discover Authority Insights for more exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage you won't find anywhere else. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. Currently, Google Messages displays the familiar standalone 'G' icon in the top-left corner of the app's screen. However, using certain tricks of the trade, we uncovered that the 'G' logo is being swapped out for the full 'Google' wordmark, a more direct and brand-forward approach. Our teardown also shows how this updated branding will appear across different devices, including Samsung phones running One UI. Although Google could have updated the existing 'G' logo to its newer multi-colored gradient version, it's not surprising that the company has made this change. Many of its core apps, like Google Calendar, Drive, and Photos, already display the 'Google' branding in the app header, typically in plain white text. In this case, Messages seems to be following that trend, but with a twist. The wordmark appears in Google's full-color logo, making it stand out a bit more. We don't know when or if Google will switch to this new branding in Messages anytime soon, but it might be part of an upcoming UI refresh. We'll keep tracking it to see if it reaches stable builds. Stephen Colbert Laments the Loss of ‘The Late Show'
Welcome to Best of Late Night, a rundown of the previous night's highlights that lets you sleep — and lets us get paid to watch comedy. Here are the 50 best movies on Netflix right now. End of an Era At the top of Thursday's 'Late Night,' Stephen Colbert announced that CBS will bring the show to an end in May. The network says the cancellation was 'purely a financial decision,' but there's speculation that Colbert's recent criticism of CBS's parent company, Paramount, was a factor. Colbert kept the announcement brief and light. When the audience booed the news, he responded with a smile, 'Yeah, I share your feelings. It's not just the end of our show, but it's the end of 'The Late Show' on CBS. I'm not being replaced. This is all just going away.' 'I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners. I'm so grateful to the Tiffany network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home. And of course I'm grateful to you, the audience, who have joined us every night in here, out there, all around the world, Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea. I'm grateful to share the stage with this band, these artists over here every night. And I am extraordinarily, deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here.' — STEPHEN COLBERT 'We get to do this show — we get to do this show for each other every day, all day, and I've had the pleasure and the responsibility of sharing what we do every day with you in front of this camera for the last 10 years. And let me tell you, it is a fantastic job. I wish somebody else was getting it. And it's a job that I'm looking forward to doing with this usual gang of idiots for another 10 months. It's going to be fun. Y'all ready?' — STEPHEN COLBERT The Punchiest Punchlines (Epstein Edition) 'Well, guys, President Trump's handling of the Epstein files continues to dominate the news. Yeah, I wonder if we're ever going to see the Epstein files. At this point, our best chance is if Coldplay shows them on the Jumbotron.' — JIMMY FALLON 'Yeah, the Epstein files won't go away. Trump is so stressed, he's like, 'I need a vacation. What was the name of that fun island I used to go to?'' — JIMMY FALLON 'President Trump said yesterday that he would rather talk about the success of his administration than the Jeffrey Epstein files. Yeah, I'm sure you would. That's like Diddy saying he'd rather talk about his V.M.A.s — you don't get to pick.' — SETH MEYERS 'I swear, we're like a day away from Trump claiming Jeffrey Epstein was never even a real person.' — SETH MEYERS 'MAGA is furious because they think Trump is refusing to release the Epstein files. In response, Trump has been saying there are no credible files, and if there are, they're really boring, and also, Obama made them up. That part is true. That part is true, and you can read them on Obama's annual 'Summer Epstein Client List.'' — STEPHEN COLBERT The Bits Worth Watching Reggie Watts, the former 'Late Late Show' bandleader, promoted his new stand-up comedy tour on Thursday's 'Daily Show.' Bitcoin reaches new record high ahead of US House's ‘Crypto Week'
Bitcoin has reached a new all-time high, trading at more than $118,000 (€100,000) on Friday. It followed an enthusiastic trading day on the US stock markets on Thursday, where the main index for tech companies, the Nasdaq, hit a record value. Interest in Bitcoin was fuelled by a bullish, optimistic trading outlook across risk assets and an appetite for investment in tech companies, such as Nvidia, which recently surged to a $4 trillion valuation. Bitcoin's all-time high also comes days before what the US House of Representatives, one of Congress' two chambers, has labelled as 'Crypto Week', starting on 14 July. This is when lawmakers are expected to debate a series of bills that could define the regulatory framework for the industry in the United States. Bitcoin gained more than 20% this year against the US dollar. Related Bitcoin hits new price high as crypto industry scores US legislation win Trump Media eyes Bitcoin reserve with €2.3 billion investor backing Bloomberg's data shows that investors poured around $1.2 billion (€1bn) into Bitcoin ETFs (exchange-traded funds) on Thursday, pushing the price to a new high beyond $116,000 before the rally continued on Friday. Much of the investments pouring into crypto came through ETFs. Cryptocurrency-based ETFs make it easier for investors to gain exposure to cryptocurrencies without having to buy them directly. These funds have exploded in popularity since bitcoin ETFs began trading in US markets last year. The strong interest in crypto boosted the price of the second-biggest crypto asset, too. Ethereum gained more than 6%, and traded at around $3,000 (€2,600) on Friday. Meanwhile, the US President continues to expand his crypto-related offerings. Trump was once a bitcoin sceptic but has since warmly embraced the cryptocurrency industry. On Tuesday, his family business Trump Media filed paperwork at the Securities and Exchange Commission for approval to launch the "Crypto Blue Chip ETF" later this year. This is a new exchange-traded fund tied to the prices of five popular cryptocurrencies. The proposed ETF would have 70% of its holdings in bitcoin, 15% in Ethereum, and 8% in Solana, a cryptocurrency popular in the meme coin community. The Trump administration has pushed for crypto-friendly regulations and laws, in line with the president's ambitions to make the US the world capital for crypto. "If we didn't have it, China would," Trump said.
