448 suspects held for document verification
While the police in Jagatisnghpur district detained four members of a family residing in the port town of Paradip, 444 persons were brought to two locations for their identification in Jharsuguda district. 'These 444 people in Jharsuguda district are not exactly detained but kept in wait till their documents are verified. We doubt that many of them do not have valid documents to stay in the country,' Himanshu Lal, IGP Northern Range Sambalpur, said.
Lal said these people, suspected to be Bangladeshis, have been residing illegally at different locations of Jharsuguda district. 'These people are kept in two locations in Jharsuguda and Brajrajnagar. We are verifying their documents to identify illegal immigrants,' the IGP said, adding that legal action will be taken against the persons found to be illegally infiltrated from Bangladesh.
Jharsuguda SP Parmar Smit Parshottamdas said a special task force (STF) has been formed in Jharsuguda district to identify and deport illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, as per the instruction of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Sources said that these people are kept at the centre set up at Black Diamond College of Engineering & Technology, Jharsuguda (for Jharsuguda sub-division) while 261 suspects detained at Surabhi Kalyan Mandap at Brajrajnagar (for Brajrajnagar sub-division).

Clarify If Detained Migrant Workers From Bengal: Court Asks Delhi Government
Kolkata: Taking up two habeas corpus petitions alleging illegal detention of migrant workers from West Bengal in Delhi, the Calcutta High Court Friday directed the administration in the northern state to clarify whether they are under detention. The petitioners, who are relatives of those allegedly detained, also sought direction to the authorities concerned for their release and production before the court. It was claimed in the two petitions that Sweety Bibi, Kurban Sheikh, their minor son, Sunali Khatun, Danish and his minor grandson have been illegally detained in New Delhi. The advocate appearing for the petitioners submitted that Bengali-speaking people have been detained in Delhi on suspicion that they are Bangladeshi citizens and that the officials did not even cross-check their identities. "In view of the nature of allegations made, prima facie, we are of the opinion that the writ petition is maintainable and this court cannot be a silent spectator," the division bench presided by Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty said. The division bench, also comprising Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra, directed the Delhi government to place before it relevant documents on whether the two had been detained or were missing. The Delhi government was also directed to answer if the "detention" was in connection with the order of any court and the grounds for that. The high court also asked the Delhi government to inform it whether they had been detained after informing them of the grounds. The administration of Delhi was also asked whether their detention was related to any investigation being conducted by the police authorities or state officials. It was also asked to answer whether there was any correspondence between the governments of the two states in this regard. The bench directed the West Bengal chief secretary to coordinate with his counterpart of the national capital territory of Delhi for compliance of the order. The court fixed July 16 as the next date of hearing. Lawyers representing the West Bengal government submitted that necessary steps are being taken by the state authorities to avail instructions from the Delhi administration. The Calcutta High Court passed similar orders on the Odisha government on Thursday over allegations that two migrant workers from West Bengal were under illegal detention in the neighbouring state. It directed the Odisha government to clarify whether migrant workers Sainur Islam and Rakibul Islam are under detention by the Odisha Police in Jagatsinghpur district of the neighbouring state. Two habeas corpus petitions were moved before the high court seeking their immediate release and production before it. This matter will come up for further hearing on July 14.

Odisha releases 403 Bengali migrant workers detained on B'deshi suspicion

Most of the Bengali-speaking migrant workers have been released, said Trinamool MP Samirul Islam, who chairs the state migrant workers' welfare board. The migrant workers, most of them from Birbhum and Murshidabad and some from South 24 Parganas, had been mostly picked up by the Jharsuguda police, according to Islam. Samiul Sk from Shahjadpur village in Murshidabad was among those detained. His father, Sariful Seikh, said his son had been detained at Pahala police station in Odisha's Khurda district along with five other teenaged migrant workers who worked as masons. Raghunath Chakraborty, the lawyer representing these two migrant workers, told the HC: "We have received information from the person concerned that detainees have been released from Odisha after the matter was filed in the HC. They have come back to their homes. But it needs to be determined whether such detentions are legal. 274 more released after proving Indian citizenship
Bhubaneswar: Police in Jharsuguda released 274 more individuals from the two holdings centres in the district, taking the total number of people allowed to leave to 403, after documents proved their Indian citizenship. Confirming the development, Inspector General (Northern Range) Himanshu Lal said document verification process of the rest 44 are still underway. The police had brought a total of 447 to the two centres to detect illegal Bangladeshi settlers. While 444 were brought to the centres on Tuesday, three others had joined them in the past three days. Police had released 25 on Wednesday and 104 on Thursday. TNN
