USC's Caden Aoki, Abbrie Covarrubius, Jack Basseer named to all-Corvallis Regional team
On Monday, USC baseball's season came to an end in the Corvallis Regional final. For the second consecutive game, the Trojans were blown out by Oregon State, this time falling 9-0 as the Beavers advanced to the Super Regionals next weekend.
The trip to Corvallis did not go without any recognition for the Trojans, however. Three USC players were named to the All-Corvallis Regional team, senior pitcher Caden Aoki, sophomore infielder Abbrie Covarrubius, and junior outfielder Jack Basseer.
Aoki shined in the Trojans' tournament opener against TCU, pitching an absolute gem. He threw 114 pitches over eight innings of work, allowing just one run on four hits.
Covarribuius led the charge against Saint Mary's on Saturday, recording a three-hit performance. Against TCU on Friday, he also drove in two runs.
Basseer had six hits across the Trojans' three tournament games. Like Covarribuius, he also had a two-RBI game against TCU.
Head coach Andy Stankiewicz still has a lot of work to do in rebuilding the program. But as the all-regional team highlightedk the Trojans are starting to put a foundation of talent in place.

Former USC men's basketball star Drew Peterson signs with Charlotte Hornets

This past year, Peterson appeared in 25 games, averaging in 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds per contest. After starting his college career at Rice, Peterson played at USC from 2020-2023. In each of his final two seasons in Cardinal and Gold, Peterson was named first-team All-Pac-12. During his USC tenure, the Trojans made it to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2021. Peterson was not selected in the 2023 NBA Draft. After a brief stint with the Miami Heat's G-League affiliate in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he signed a two-way contract with the Celtics in December of 2023. Peterson had a lot of great moments during his time in Cardinal and Gold. USC fans will certainly be continuing to cheer him on at the next level.

USC football countdown to kickoff—Bruce Luizzi in focus

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 46 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. With the recent options for No. 46 fairly limited, today, we take it back to the late 1980s/early 1990s and look at former USC defensive back and special teams standout Bruce Luizzi. Position: Defensive back Years played at USC: 1988-1992 Career highlights: A November 1992 Los Angeles Times story detailed Luizzi's impact for the Trojans. 'Luizzi, a college senior, was the best at USC last season. Luizzi was honored as the Trojans' special-teams player of the year in 1991. 'This season, he has made several key tackles, and during Saturday's 38-37 loss to UCLA he recovered Zuri Hector's block of Darren Schager's punt in the end zone for a third-quarter touchdown that gave the Trojans a 24-17 lead. 'Saturday's game will be the last at the Coliseum for Luizzi, concluding a career laced with disappointment. After primarily returning kickoffs as a freshman in 1989, Luizzi was USC's extra defensive back in passing situations in 1990. 'He anticipated becoming a starter in 1991 but was beaten out by Mike Salmon. Luizzi missed another chance to contribute when USC dropped its five defensive back alignment. ''It's been really frustrating but I go out on special teams, do my job out there and, hopefully, I'll get noticed,' said Luizzi, adding that he does not regret attending USC. 'I'm just hoping to get my chance out there. I have two more games, and if something happens where I have to go in there, I'm going to do the job because I have enough confidence in myself that no matter where I'm playing, I'm going to get the job done.'' After USC: Luizzi never played in the NFL. After a brief career in the Canadian Football League, he has worked for several decades as an entertainment executive.

USC Trojans could own the best receiver duo in college football, not just the Big Ten

Lincoln Riley is no stranger to having NFL caliber receivers on his team. This season two receivers on the USC Trojans could potentially form the best receiver duo in the nation. With the Trojans having a disappointing season last year, having a prolific offense could help them become more competitive in the Big Ten. Tt starts with their two star receivers. Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane both get their fair share of hype individually, but together as a duo, experts are predicting them to be the best in the nation. In Sports Illustrated, Lorenzo Reyna predicts the USC Trojans could field the nation's best wide receiver duo in his bold predictions for the Trojans this season. "Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane fuel the next lineage of NFL-caliber wideouts at USC. Both are sparking their own league hype. Lemon earned WR1 recognition by Pro Football Focus back on June 25. Calling him a lightning quick talent who thrives on creating separation. Lane, meanwhile, won over ESPN's Jordan Reid and placed him at the top of the next WR class. He brings intrigue as a 6-foot-4 talent. "Creating chemistry with Maiava is a must for this fall. Because defenses will have difficulty containing both if Maiava is on his game. But Lemon and Lane together form the nation's premier wideout duo. Especially with Big Ten rival Ohio State losing Emeka Egbuka to April's draft." Both receivers attack defenses differently with Lemon being a speedy deep play threat and Lane being the big body receiver who is a nightmare on the outside. Quarterback Jayden Maiava has some pressure on him to perform next season, but with two bonafide stars to throw the ball to, USC should be the offensive powerhouse we expect Lincoln Riley offenses to be. When you think of dominant college receiving rooms, the first thought is always Ohio State. However, this season Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane are making USC a team experts have to consider. It isn't out the realm of possibility that the Trojans will field two 1,000-yard receivers and two receivers who are first round picks when this season is all said and done.
