Wrexham to kick-off Championship season at Southampton
Promoted Wrexham will start the 2025-26 Championship season away to Southampton, who were relegated from the Premier League last season.The game on Saturday, 9 August at St Mary's will kick-off at 12.30 BST for live television coverage.Wrexham will be playing in English football's second tier for the first time in 43 years after securing a third successive promotion last season.The Dragons host West Bromwich Albion in their first home game of the campaign a week later.Other fixtures of note see Phil Parkinson's men host fellow promoted side Birmingham City on Saturday, 4 October, while they face Welsh rivals Swansea City away on Saturday, 20 December.Boxing Day sees Wrexham renew acquaintances with Sheffield United at the Stok Cae Ras, followed by the visit of Preston North End on Monday, 29 December.Blackburn Rovers away will be Wrexham's opponents on New Year's Day and they travel to Derby County on Saturday, 4 January, 2026.The return Welsh derby against Swansea takes place on Saturday, 14 March and the regulation season ends with a home game against Middlesbrough on Saturday, 2 May (kick-off 12:20 BST).Follow this link for Wrexham's full 2025-26 fixture list.*Dates and kick-off times will be subject to change.

Walsall defender Farquharson signs new contract
Walsall defender Priestley Farquharson has signed a new one-year contract extension which includes the option of a further 28, joined Walsall in July 2023 after leaving Newport County and has played 24 times for the club. Ian Wright says England's bench could be key to Euro 2025 success
Sarina Wiegman's side were leading 1-0 in Catalonia earlier in June when Claudia Pina was introduced for the world champions just before the hour mark, the Barcelona forward scoring twice in 10 minutes to deny England a place in the semi-finals and lay bare the size of their task if they are to avenge their 2023 World Cup final defeat next month. The Lionesses go into their title defence, which begins against France in Letzigrund on July 5, reeling from the loss of Euro 2022 captain Millie Bright who has withdrawn from the squad, as well as Mary Earps and Fran Kirby who have both retired, decisions that Wright said he supported. 'It's sad to see Millie Bright, Mary Earps and Fran Kirby leave the squad at this stage,' said Wright, who was speaking at an event in London to mark one year of Barclays Free Park Tennis scheme, which provides facilities and coaching with the aim of removing barriers between children and grassroots sport. 'Obviously they've got their reasons and I'll back them whatever those reasons are because of the calibre of players they are and what they've brought to the women's game. 'But from a squad perspective, we're getting ready to play tournament football which we've been very successful in however we're playing.' England were a clear second best to the world champions despite taking a first-half lead though Alessia Russo, with shades of Spain's commanding victory when the sides met in the World Cup final in Sydney. The home side dominated possession of the ball and limited the Lionesses to only four shots on goal, though it took the arrival of Pina in the second half before the world champions broke through. 'We weren't able to keep the ball and do well enough to fight off a Spanish side that are very ball-retentive and creative,' said Wright. 'That's going to tire you out at some stage. 'That's something they're going to have to deal with, especially the fact that Spain were able to bring on somebody like Claudia Pina who scored the winning goal. 'Substitutes are vitally important now. We do need Lauren James fit obviously, but then it's down to the team to know what they're doing. They do know how to play tournament football.' Wright also pointed to the importance of investment in grassroots sport if a new generation of Lionesses and talent across other sports is to emerge. 'When I was younger we didn't have anything like this (Free Park Tennis) what has been provided,' he said. 'I want to make sure that my voice is heard with anything to do with grassroots sport. 'This sort of initiative gives equipment, it give facilities whatever your ability. That is something that when I was younger was a pipe dream.'

Ruud van Nistelrooy's Leicester departure confirmed
Van Nistelrooy was appointed at the King Power Stadium in November but was unable to steer the club away from danger, with a return to the Championship confirmed with five games of the season to play. The Dutchman called for clarity on his future following their relegation at the beginning of May, but has had to wait with the club finally confirming his exit on Friday morning. With players due back in for pre-season training on June 30, the recruitment process for Van Nistelrooy's replacement is well under way. A statement read: 'Leicester City Football Club and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed that Ruud's contract with the club as first team manager will terminate with immediate effect. 'Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the club. From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including through the integration of several promising players from the club's academy into our first team environment. 'Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the football club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future. 'Preparation for the EFL Championship season will continue with the planned start of pre-season on Monday, June 30. 'First team coaching staff will oversee the delivery of those plans until a new manager is appointed. 'There will be no further comment until this process has been completed.' Van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper on November 29 and won four points in his opening two games. But that was as good as it got, as a run of 15 defeats from their next 16 matches sealed their fate. Within that run, they lost nine successive home games without scoring – a new top-flight record. Once relegation was confirmed, the Foxes improved, taking seven points from their final five outings to finish 18th, 13 points from safety. Van Nistelrooy called for talks with the club's hierarchy as soon as relegation was confirmed, but was left hanging for a number of weeks. The Dutchman said: 'I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club and to thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the club well for the future.' The Foxes face the prospect of having to deal with a significant points deduction in the Championship, having been charged by the Premier League for breaking Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Leicester begin their season with the visit of Sheffield Wednesday on August 10.
