Maruti says engineers working to mitigate rare earth magnet shortage issue

Economic Times3 days ago
Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday said its engineers are working to mitigate the rare earth magnet shortage issue, noting that there has been no impact on its production so far.In an analyst call post the company's June quarter financial results, Maruti Suzuki India Senior Executive Officer Corporate Affairs Rahul Bharti termed the shortage a challenging situation."So, it is a challenge, and of course, our engineers are working to mitigate it and ensure that we do not have the impact of this."So, it's work in progress, but as of now, we are managing the situation. If and when there is an impact, we'll come back to you to answer your question," Bharti replied to a query on the matter. The recent imposition of export restrictions by China on key rare earth magnets has resulted in supply chain bottlenecks, impacting the user industries, including the auto and electronics sectors.
China currently dominates the global rare earth magnet supply chain, controlling over 90 per cent of global processing capacity. These magnets are essential components across sectors like automobiles, household appliances, and renewable energy. The Chinese government has mandated, from April 4 onwards, that special export licences be required for seven rare earth elements and associated magnets. On demand scenario in the domestic market, Bharti said: "At the beginning of the year, the industry body had given a kind of a guess of 1-2 per cent growth this fiscal. Q1 has not been up to the mark. Q2 has some positives".He noted that the company is expecting the situation to improve in the festive season."There are other positives also, like the monsoon and rural (sales) are holding up. So, we are looking at the second quarter and the festive season with optimism," Bharti stated.Replying to a query on the upcoming Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE)-3 norms, he said the discussions have been proceeding well between industry and government with both sides understanding each other's position quite well.
"It is a complex topic, but there have been sufficient discussions and all the complexibilities are on the table, and it is expected that between one to two months, all of us are hoping that the final revelation will be out, so that we have clarity for for the powertrains starting from first April 2027," Bharti stated.

Pakistan's close ally China faces major threat! Offering citizens lakhs of money due to..., reason will shock you

With the rising conflicts and wars across the globe, several countries are either stockpiling military assets or emphasizing population growth. Many countries are preparing for conflict in today's geopolitical climate. Orders to strengthen military capabilities are increasing, and population size is once again being viewed as a strategic asset. It is to be noted that population holds a significant role in war—whether as a source of manpower, economic strength, or national resilience. Well, Pakistan's close ally, China, is facing a serious problem: declining birth rates. According to the BBC report, the Chinese government has announced an annual subsidy of 3,600 yuan (around £375, $500) payable to parents for each child under the age of three under a new initiative launched to encourage more births nationally for the first time. China is now experiencing the consequences of its largest policy blunder: the 'one child' policy. While it produced rapid economic growth for decades, it also produced a fast-growing elderly population and turned China into an 'aged' nation before its time. This situation has become so dire that the government is now offering subsidies to encourage childbirth. On Monday, the government announced a policy that will provide the parents of children under the age of three an annual subsidy of 3,600 yuan (reportedly about Rs 41,000). The policy will be implemented on January 1, 2025. Meanwhile, even families with children born in 2022, 2023, or 2024 will still be eligible for partial benefits. The subsidy will be tax-free and excluded from poverty-assistance eligibility calculations. The government estimates that 20 million families could benefit from the new program. According to state media, the handouts will benefit about 20 million families, with the cost of raising children. The plan was revealed on Monday, with parents receiving up to 10800 yuan per child. Beijing's state broadcaster CCTV said the policy will be retroactive to the beginning of the year reported BBC. This comes amid multiple local government initiatives designed to address low birth rates in locations across China. For example, in Hohhot, a city in the northern region of China, parents are receiving support of up to 100,000 yuan per baby for couples with at least three children. The study by the China-based YuWa Population Research Institute found that the average nationwide cost of raising a child from birth to age 17 was about $74,800 – rising to more than $94,500 to support a child through a bachelor's degree, CNN reported. The cost of raising a child to age 18 in China is 6.3 times higher than the country's GDP per capita, the report said – a ratio second only to South Korea, which has the world's lowest fertility rate, and where the cost of child-rearing is 7.79 times the GDP per capita, CNN reported.

APSRTC urged to replace outdated ticketing machines before free bus travel scheme rollout

Vijayawada: AP public transport dept (RTC) employees have urged the govt to replace the outdated unified ticketing system machines ahead of rolling out the free bus travel scheme for women passengers in govt-run buses from Aug 15 in the state. They said the existing ticket issuing machines (TIMS), which are over three years old, are creating manifold problems for conductors while issuing tickets, with issues like inadequate battery backup, hardware/motherboard problems, and touch screen issues. The bus conductors, in many instances, are forced to issue manual tickets to passengers as the substandard paper roll and ink quantity supplied to TIMS machines do not give properly printed tickets. APSRTC has around 14,000 TIMS devices procured from E-Bix, a Chinese firm, for which the govt pays a monthly rent of Rs 680 for each device. "The govt plans to roll out the free bus travel scheme for women across the state from Aug 15. Following the launch of the scheme, APSRTC buses will see more number of passengers, particularly women. It would be increasingly difficult for RTC drivers and conductors to issue tickets using the existing TIMS devices, as these machines, which run on 4G network, have less data speed, posing significant difficulty in issuing a large number of free tickets in a short time," APSRTC employees' union president P Damodar Rao said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Explore new and used vehicles across the board. Carxplore Shop Now Undo RTC employees have submitted a representation to the authorities requesting the corporation replace the existing TIMS devices with newer ones to facilitate a seamless ticketing experience for passengers by the launch of the free bus scheme. "The corporation should tie up with banks and software firms and ask them to donate free TIMS devices and paper rolls with their bank rolls to reduce the burden on the corporation and provide better services to passengers. In Tamil Nadu, govt buses are using TIMS devices provided by a public sector bank free of cost, with quality paper rolls also supplied by the bank, thus reducing the burden on the govt. APSRTC, too, should explore the TN model and replicate it in AP," the employees urged the corporation. They also demanded the installation of charging points on the older RTC buses to charge the TIMS devices.
