Blue Jays' George Springer 'doing all right' after getting struck in head by fastball
Article content
As Toronto's designated hitter lay prone at the plate, the raucous crowd of 20,176 at Camden Yards immediately became silent. Quite suddenly, Baltimore's seven-run ninth-inning lead over the Blue Jays on Monday night became of secondary importance to the condition of Springer, who was essentially motionless in the dirt.

After several anxious moments, Springer slowly lifted his head. He mouthed the word 'Wow!' before walking to the dugout with aid from a man on each side.

'He's doing all right,' manager John Schneider said afterward. 'Kind of got him on the shoulder and then the helmet. Thankfully he was able to turn a little bit, too.'

It was as good a result as could be expected after the 96 miles per hour pitch from Kade Stroud struck Springer in the head in the Blue Jays' 11-4 loss. Stroud crouched behind the mound, a worried look on his face as he watched, waiting and desperately hoping for Springer to get up.

'That's the worst part of baseball for any side, when a pitch gets thrown that high,' Schneider said. 'You don't think about baseball. You think about the human. It's scary. It happens. It sucks.'

Dahlmeier, an Olympic gold medalist, was climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range when she was struck Monday by falling rocks. Rescuers comprising local mountaineers and porters had resumed efforts on Wednesday to reach the injured German Olympic gold medalist Lon a peak in northern Pakistan, officials said. Faizullah Faraq, a spokesman for the regional Gilgit-Baltistan government, said rescuers were racing against time to reach Dahlmeier despite bad weather on the Laila Peak, where she has been stranded since Monday following a mountaineering accident. Dahlmeier, who also won the 2017 women's biathlon World Cup, was climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range when she was struck by falling rocks. Climbers including two Americans attempting the same ascent are trying to join the rescue operation. Military helicopters were on standby but have been unable to deploy due to low visibility and ongoing bad weather and rainfall, Faraq said. Local authorities launched the rescue mission Monday after receiving a distress signal from Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Eva, who managed to descend to base camp with help from rescuers Tuesday. Dahlmeier was injured at an altitude of about 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) around noon Monday, according to her management team in Germany. German broadcaster ZDF reported she suffered serious injuries in a rockfall. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'There is still no clarity on her condition,' Alpine Club of Pakistan Vice President Karrar Haidri told The Associated Press. 'She sustained serious injuries, but she has oxygen with her, and injured climbers have been known to survive for days.' 'With heavy clouds choking the sky and rain falling on the high slopes of Laila Peak, rescuers are pushing through dangerous terrain to reach her,' Haidri said. Hundreds of climbers try to scale mountains in northern Pakistan every year and accidents are common because of avalanches and sudden weather changes. The region has also been battered by above-normal seasonal rains, triggering flash floods and landslides. Since last week, at least 20 Pakistani tourists have been missing after floodwaters swept them away near the northern district of Chilas. Adams completed 15-of-25 passes for 193 yards and a TD and had just the one run. Walker completed three-of-seven pass attempts for 20 yards Receiver Damien Alford (hamstring) is also out, while receiver Jalen Philpot (hamstring) is questionable. Calgary acquired Adams from the B.C. Lions following the 2024 campaign. He has thrown for 1,913 yards and nine TDs this season. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 20, 2025.
