Korean defense firms to unlock Middle East market potential at IDEX 2025
From Feb. 17 to 21 in Abu Dhabi, the International Defence Exhibition & Conference 2025 will feature Korean defense giants such as Hanwha Aerospace, Hyundai Rotem and LIG Nex1, alongside 1,350 companies from 65 countries.
Korean companies will showcase their cutting-edge products in a region that includes seven of the top 20 global military asset importers from 2019-2023.
Hanwha Aerospace, a leading defense solutions provider covering land, sea and air, will set up its largest booth ever at IDEX in partnership with its radar-making unit, Hanwha Systems.
The booth will exhibit Korea's homegrown long-range surface-to-air missile, designed to intercept missiles at high altitudes of over 40 kilometers and developed in collaboration with LIG Nex1, for the first time at an overseas defense exhibition.
Hanwha will also present land-based air and missile defense systems, designed for low-altitude defense, typically targeting threats within 10-20 kilometers.
The firm will display its expanding range of air defense systems, designed to meet the growing global demand as countering missile and drone attacks becomes increasingly crucial in modern warfare.
The K9 self-propelled howitzer, a flagship product of Hanwha Aerospace, will also be showcased at the exhibition. Already adopted by nine countries, including Turkey and Egypt, the K9 is poised to expand its presence in additional markets, with its powerful capabilities and high mobility.
'We will showcase our cutting-edge multi-layer air defense solutions, the K9 equipped with a Korea-made engine and more products tailored to the needs of Middle Eastern countries,' said a Hanwha Aerospace official. 'We hope our response to regional security demands will contribute to peace and economic growth in the region.'
LIG Nex1 will also set up a booth to display its medium-range surface-to-air missile, Cheongung-II, dubbed the "Korean Patriot." Several countries in the Middle East have already adopted this system, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, validating its effectiveness in the region's unique security environment and climate.
With a focus on future warfare, LIG Nex1's booth will feature uncrewed defense systems, including uncrewed surface vessels and guided weapons designed to be deployed on various platforms.
Along with the companies, Seok Jong-gun, head of South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration, and other DAPA officials are scheduled to visit IDEX. The group aims to promote Korean products and explore future collaboration opportunities with defense authorities attending the event.

South Korea will join hands with Cambodia to distribute electric motorcycles and charging stations in the Southeast Asian nation, marking Seoul's first-ever international carbon emission reduction project, the industry ministry said Monday. The project, aimed at reducing 680,000 tons of carbon emissions in Cambodia, is South Korea's first international carbon reduction initiative established under the Paris Agreement, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The project was officially approved by the Cambodian government Friday. Under the Paris Agreement, a host country can sell internationally transferred mitigation outcomes, or carbon credits, to a buyer country in exchange for investments, support for carbon reduction capacity building and access to related technologies. Of the 680,000 tons of projected carbon reductions, carbon credits worth 400,000 tons will be transferred to Korea and used for the country's nationally determined contribution for achieving carbon neutrality, the ministry explained. South Korea has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent from 2018 levels by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The ministry said Seoul will also work to expand cooperation with Phnom Penh in the transportation sector to further reduce carbon emissions. "This project is Korea's first internationally approved carbon reduction initiative," an official at the ministry said. "By combining Cambodia's commitment to carbon reduction with the technological expertise and investment of Korean companies, the project can evolve into a win-win intergovernmental cooperation model for the two countries." Czech deputy minister urges NATO, South Korea to broaden defense ties
Radka Konderlova, deputy minister and director general of the Industrial Cooperation Division at the Ministry of Defense of the Czech Republic, underscored the strategic necessity for defense cooperation between NATO members and South Korea through industrial and tech collaboration. During her visit to Seoul, Konderlova told The Korea Herald that deeper Czech-Korean defense industry cooperation and supply chain integration would benefit both sides, enabling Korean firms to expand regionally and Czech companies to join Korean acquisition projects. 'After the fall of the Iron Curtain, Czech companies had to shift from Soviet-era systems to NATO standards, which made them highly adaptable,' she said, referring to the strength of the Czech defense industry and its long tradition. '(Czech companies) also have extensive global contacts from the past, which is a great advantage for Korean companies looking to broaden their customer base.' 'When we talk about broader defense cooperation, we're also referring to military-to-military contacts, which often happen through industrial cooperation,' she underscored. Konderlova noted that Poland's tank deal with Korea boosted military ties, suggesting similar Czech-Korean industrial cooperation could do the same. She highlighted small and medium-sized Czech defense enterprises as agile, reliable partners for foreign collaboration. 'Our defense industrial base is largely composed of SMEs, which are more flexible and responsive to partners' needs. This makes them ideal collaborators,' Konderlova stated. Calling the Korea-Czech defense engagement a 'win-win,' she stressed that the relationship should go beyond simple exports. 'It's not just about exporting. It's about building mutually beneficial real partnerships —multilateral cooperation,' she said. Konderlova cited CZ's partnership with Korea's SNT Motiv, involving tech transfer and joint participation in Korean defense tenders, as a model of Czech-Korean defense cooperation. She underlined the need for local content in defense deals, urging Korean firms to partner with Czech companies to stay competitive. Highlighting Korea's advanced systems, such as the K9 and Black Eagle tank, she praised the Defense Acquisition Program Administration as a key partner, and noted the Czech Defense Industrial Cooperation Division's role as a gateway for global tech. AI and drones, she added, are becoming central to modern defense. She recommended emerging tech such as AI, drones and cybersecurity, citing shifting battlefields in Gaza and Ukraine. Konderlova believes there is major potential in combining Czech research and development with Korean industry, and urged both countries to stay open and proactive. 'Be open-minded. Don't be discouraged by the geographical distance between the Czech Republic and Korea,' is her message to Korean defense companies. Konderlova thanked DAPA, highlighted strong diplomatic ties and emphasized her visit's role in boosting partnerships. She brought Czech firms for business-to-business meetings with Korean counterparts and urged mutual participation in defense exhibitions such as Korea's ADEX and Czech trade fairs. LG Uplus debuts financial AI model on AWS Bedrock
LG Uplus, one of the top three telecommunications providers in South Korea, said Sunday that it has launched its specialized small language model, ixi-Gen, on the Amazon Web Services Bedrock marketplace ― becoming the first Korean telecom company to bring an internally developed artificial intelligence language model to the global stage. Built on LG's large language model Exaone, ixi-Gen has been optimized for financial applications through targeted learning on finance-specific data sets. According to LG Uplus, the model delivers up to 31 percent improved performance in financial tasks compared to general-purpose AI models, while maintaining high levels of accuracy, safety and content filtering. AWS Bedrock is a fully managed AI service that enables developers to build applications using foundation models from leading providers without managing infrastructure. Its marketplace functions as a central hub for organizations to explore, compare and integrate AI models ― offering over 100 models globally from major players such as Amazon, Meta, Mistral and Cohere. To be listed on the Bedrock marketplace, AI models must pass rigorous security and performance evaluations. LG Uplus emphasized that ixi-Gen's successful listing reflects both its technical sophistication and trustworthiness ― qualities increasingly sought after by enterprises adopting AI. The mobile carrier plans to expand the capabilities of ixi-Gen beyond the financial and telecommunications sectors into other industries where domain-specific AI solutions are in demand.
