AFL 2025: North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson to give forward Jack Darling every chance to play

News.com.au26-06-2025
North Melbourne could wait until an hour before the first bounce on Saturday to confirm the selection of veteran forward Jack Darling.
Darling suffered an unusual cut leg from a rogue boot during the Kangaroos' 11-point win over Carlton last weekend.
The new Roo played through the pain of the gruesome wound but required stitches and has been held back from training this week.
North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson said he would name Darling before putting the forward through his paces ahead of Saturday's match against Hawthorn.
'It was obviously a pretty significant injury as it turned out (and) enormously courageous for him to come back out onto the field,' he said.
'Our docs did a great job to be able to do that and his courage to accept it could be wrapped up, get back out on the ground and contribute to our win was really important for us.
'Needless to say he's had that stitched up and hasn't been able to do much training yet. Because of the stitches he's unable to get it too moist with sweating and stuff.
'He'll be a test, we'll select him tonight to play and hope that he gets up, but that decision might be made an hour before the game … he gives himself a chance to play but we won't know until an hour before the game, more than likely.'
Darling has kicked 13 goals over 14 games in his debut season at North Melbourne after 532 in 298 at West Coast.
Clarkson said the 33-year-old was eager to play and his fitness would come down to movement and expert advice.
'Yeah, yeah he wants to play, he said that right from the get-go even before he got it stitched up last week,' he said.
'We will wait and see what his function is like and more importantly whether the surgeon and the docs think him doing too much exercise or getting a knock on it might have the stitches bust.
'We need to be mindful of that. He might play with some sort of guard if he does play, but we will cross that on Saturday morning.'
North Melbourne defender Jackson Archer had a hamstring scare in the VFL and will also be put through a fitness test.
The Kangaroos, with four wins, are chasing their best season since 2019 when they tackle Hawthorn in Tasmania.

Australia Cup: Melbourne City suffers shock early exit

A-League champions Melbourne City have defended their controversial decision to field a youth team in the club's shock 2-0 Australia Cup loss to NPL NSW outfit APIA Leichhardt. Having entered the Cup at the round-of-32 stage, City's bid to reach the last 16 ended on Tuesday night in wet conditions at Leichhardt Oval. City's starting side included only one player – 19-year-old striker Max Caputo – that started in last season's A-League grand final, with the oldest player in the team being 21-year-old midfielder Alessandro Lopane. City's squad – which had an average age of 17.6 – was otherwise almost entirely made of teenagers, including 15-year-old substitute Akeem Gerald, from the club's NPL Victoria second division team. City's decision not to use almost all of the club's first-choice players led to accusations that the club had treated the Cup with contempt and had shown APIA a lack of respect. However, City's football director Michael Petrillo said the club had little choice but to field a team made up entirely of young players due to injuries and a late start to pre-season training. 'There was no way we were ready,' Petrillo said 'We came back to training really late (July 15). If it (the Cup game) was in maybe another two weeks, then we probably would have played another four or five of the senior players.' Melbourne City 15-year-old substitute Akeem Gerald (centre)_wins the ball during his team's 2-0 Australia Cup to APIA Leichhardt. Picture:Petrillo said the club wasn't willing to gamble on the fitness of players with City's AFC Champions League Elite campaign set to start in about six weeks' time. 'We would have played anyone that was ready but we didn't want to take any risks because we're a thin squad, we've got to play on two fronts (Champions League and A-League), and we need to make sure everyone's fit and well, particularly when we had a lot of injuries last season,' he said. 'We don't want to go down the same track again this season.' Petrillo was confident a host of regulars, including captain Aziz Behich, Joe Marston Medal winner Mathew Leckie, defenders Kai Trewin and Nathaniel Atkinson, midfielder Andreas Kuen and goalkeeper Patrick Beach, would be available for a couple of trial games City is hopeful of scheduling in late August. The club is also planing to sign two foreign attacking players in the upcoming weeks in a bid to further strengthen its squad. Australia Cup round-of-16 (games to be played August 9-13): South Melbourne v Auckland FC, Avondale v APIA Leichhardt, Brisbane City v Olympic Kingsway, Heidelberg United v Western Sydney Wanderers, Nunawading City v Wellington Phoenix, Sydney United 58 v Sydney FC, Cooks Hill United FC v Newcastle Jets, Metro Stars v Macarthur FC. Shane Crawford fights back tears as he opens up on death of his brother

Hawthorn legend Shane Crawford was left fighting back tears as he spoke about his younger brother's suicide. Justin died in 2022 at the age of 45 in a moment that left the entire Crawford family heartbroken. 'It's just like a wild storm that's just thrown into your face and you just don't know how to sort of move through it,' Crawford told Mike Amor on 7News. 'When I heard the news from my mother, and it took a full day for my mother to communicate with me. 'You have days where...,' he says before pausing as the emotion hits. '... where you look for answers and they're not there.' The two brothers shared their childhood dream of running out for an AFL game together when Justin joined Shane at Hawthorn in 1997. Those memories are ones Shane often reflects on and says he has a simple message if his brother was still around. 'I was very proud of him and probably needed to tell him more,' he said. 'I'd tell him he's always been loved and cherished and to grow into an old man.' Shane said Justin had left notes behind explaining everything that he was going through. 'We were lucky because we had a few little notes that were left and, it doesn't make it easier, probably not, but there were a few things there that explained a little bit about how he was feeling and a little of him explaining how much loved and thanked everyone for helping. 'He adored his son and it was such an unbelievable relationship, to know he didn't feel worthy enough to be around for that. He was obviously well and truly over the cliff.' Justin played four seasons in the AFL after being selected by the Swans before the 1994 AFL Draft, he went on to tally a total of 46 games for the Swans and Hawks were he kicked a total of 32 goals.

Jack Whitlock to debut for Port Adelaide against Geelong

Port Adelaide captain Connor Rozee will battle on despite a sore hand as other pillars fall around him, while Ken Hinkley will name a debutant for the Power. Emerging Port Adelaide tall forward Jack Whitlock is poised to debut against Geelong on Sunday. Taken at pick 33 from Murray Bushrangers in last year's national draft, Whitlock is line to replace the injured Jack Lukosius for the away clash. The Power has been adamant it will not play youngsters before they are ready just because its cannot make the finals. A raft of injuries and Whitlock's SANFL form, which includes kicking three goals against North Adelaide a fortnight ago, presents the 19-year-old, 200cm draftee with an opportunity. 'Now is a great time to have that conversation a little bit more about the upside versus the downside,' Port coach Ken Hinkley said. — Matt Turner (@mattturner1986) July 31, 2025 'The upside might get in front at this stage of the season. 'When you've got availability quite low, that's where there's potential to explore some youth ahead of time. 'There's a number of experienced players we could lean on but we've also got to balance what's next.' The Power will be forced to make at least two changes, replacing Lukosius and Miles Bergman. Bergman was ruled out for the remainder of the season on Wednesday because of a shoulder issue. Hinkley said the midfielder/defender would have pushed through the pain if playing finals was a possibility. 'It's a tough decision (to end his season early), but the right thing for his long-term future,' Hinkley said. 'Each game he played it was getting a little bit worse for him to handle. 'We've had 18 surgeries since January – that's a really big number.' Hinkley said captain Connor Rozee would battle on because his fractured hand was a more manageable issue. 'It'll be sore for another week or two probably before the pain goes away,' he said. Fresh off a 98-point Showdown loss and undermanned, Port is hoping to play at a level it can be proud of against the fourth-placed Cats. 'Last week was really disappointing,' Hinkley said. 'If we're able to challenge Geelong and potentially beat them, that'd be a great bit of confidence for some young people against a really experienced side.' Hinkley said he would love to see Geelong spearhead Jeremy Cameron reach 100 goals, so long as he did not go well this weekend. Cameron sits on 69 majors with four minor rounds remaining. 'Jez is a great player,' Hinkley said. 'I think think it'd be outstanding for football to see 100 goals kicked again. 'It's showing us what offence is starting to become again – it's typically getting on top these last couple of seasons.
