Amazon reaches new milestone, becomes world's largest manufacturer and operator of…

Amazon has announced that it has reached a significant milestone, deploying its millionth worker robot across its global network of over 300 facilities. The company also revealed plans to power its entire robot fleet with a newly launched generative artificial intelligence (AI) model named " DeepFleet ." This expansion comes soon after company CEO Andy Jassy talked about job cuts and increasing automation. Amazon developing AI-powered robot fleet to boost efficiency According to Scott Dresser, Vice President of Amazon Robotics , this achievement solidifies Amazon's position as the world's largest manufacturer and operator of mobile robotics . Dresser stated that the new DeepFleet AI model will change how robots move within fulfillment centers, aiming to reduce fleet travel time by 10%. This efficiency gain is expected to lead to faster and more cost-effective package deliveries. Amazon began integrating robots into its operations in 2012, initially to transport inventory shelves. Since then, the roles of these automated workers have expanded, now including robots capable of lifting up to 1,250 pounds and fully autonomous units navigating facilities with customer orders. The company's continued investment in robotics and AI contrasts with some tech industry trends, though AI-powered humanoid robots are also anticipated to be deployed in Tesla factories this year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Adidas Three Shorts With 60% Discount, Limited Stock Available Original Adidas Shop Now Undo Robots to work alongside humans: Amazon Dresser, while addressing anxieties about AI-led job cuts, emphasised that Amazon's robots 'work alongside our employees, handling heavy lifting and repetitive tasks while creating new opportunities for our front-line operators to develop technical skills.' He pointed to Amazon's new fulfillment center in Shreveport, Louisiana, which opened late last year and reportedly required 30% more employees in specialised roles like reliability, maintenance and engineering. However, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently told CNBC that the company's aggressive adoption of generative AI will inevitably lead to 'fewer people doing some of the jobs that the technology actually starts to automate.' While Jassy also stated that Amazon would continue to hire in AI and robotics, he admitted in an internal memo earlier this June that he expects the company's overall workforce to 'shrink in the coming years' due to technological advancements. Amazon India's Prime Day returns on July 12-14 with 72-hour mega sale

Amazon India has announced that its annual Prime Day sale will take place from July 12 to July 14 this year. The 72-hour event, available exclusively to Prime members, will feature discounts across a broad range of categories, including smartphones, consumer electronics, home appliances, fashion and household essentials. The sale, which begins at midnight on July 12, will also include promotions on Amazon-branded devices and entertainment content accessible through the platform. Customers using ICICI Bank credit and debit cards, as well as SBI credit cards, will be eligible for additional discounts, including 10 per cent savings on select transactions, according to the company. The sale will offer up to 40 per cent off on smartphones and accessories, with added incentives such as instant bank discounts, no-cost EMI plans of up to 24 months, and exchange offers valued at up to Rs 60,000. Deals will also be available on flagship models including the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra 5G, iPhone 15 and OnePlus 13s. The event will feature discounts of up to 65 per cent on home appliances from brands including LG, Samsung, Haier, Godrej and Carrier. Shoppers can also access exchange benefits of up to Rs 17,000 and coupon discounts of up to Rs 5,000 on energy-efficient models. Amazon India will offer discounts ranging from 50 to 80 per cent on more than 500,000 products in its fashion and beauty categories during Prime Day. The sale includes apparel, footwear, cosmetics, jewellery, watches and luggage. Amazon India recently stated that Prime Day 2025 would run for three days for the first time—up from the usual two days. Members will gain an additional 24 hours to shop across major brands and small businesses. The expansion from 48 hours to 72 hours reflects Amazon India's accelerating push to grow its Prime membership base in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, with a clear shift in adoption beyond traditional metropolitan strongholds. In a recent interview, Akshay Sahi, director, Prime, deliveries and returns for India and emerging markets, emphasised the widening geographic footprint of Prime, noting that last Prime Day, the firm had over 60 per cent of sign-ups coming from cities outside the top 20. This shift has been supported by targeted investments in Amazon's logistics network. The company recently announced it will invest more than Rs 2,000 crore in India in 2025 as it strengthens its logistics and safety standards. Last year's Prime Day marked Amazon India's biggest ever, with a 24 per cent increase in Prime member participation and record sign-ups, highlighting growing demand across the country.

Amazon CEO reveals which jobs are next to go after 27,000 layoffs — is yours on the list?

Jassy even acknowledged that the adoption of generative AI would mean 'fewer people' are needed for certain roles, as reported by Fortune. Even in the recent internal memo, Jassy had mentioned that 'We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs. It's hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company,' as quoted by Fortune in its report.
