
Biggest US carmaker pauses production for best-selling trucks
The Silao plant is just one of several that build the full-size pickup trucks. They're also assembled in Indiana, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada. It's not unusual for automakers to temporarily pause production of popular models, especially to retool assembly lines or manage inventory levels. 'Scheduled down weeks at GM Silao are part of a standard operating process focused on optimizing production at our Manufacturing Complex,' the company told DailyMail.com.
But a second two-week shutdown is raising eyebrows, particularly for the Silverado, which sold more than 540,000 units in 2024 – second only to Ford's F-Series pickups. The Sierra is no sales slouch either. The higher-end truck, that comes with more exterior chrome, more luxury interior finishes, and a mechanically similar power center, sold over 340,000 copies last year.
Neither car has a reported inventory glut. They also don't have any major reported changes coming to the design that would necessitate a production pause. As of May, Chevrolet had a 65-day supply of vehicles on dealer lots, just under the 70-day industry average. GMC's supply was slightly higher at 77 days. But broader geopolitical and economic factors might be playing into GM's decision, analysts warn.
GM has said it is reevaluating how it will build some of its cars in the face of President Donald Trump's 25 percent automotive tariffs . Mary Barra (pictured), the company's top boss, has said the company expects to pay between $4 billion and $5 billion in tariffs this year. She said the automaker doesn't have plans to pass those costs on to consumers. To reduce those costs, GM is investing heavily in stateside manufacturing.
The company is spending $888 million to retool an engine plant in Buffalo, New York, for a new line of V8 engines for large trucks and SUVs. GM is also spending about $4 billion to move production of its top-selling Chevy SUVs, the Equinox and Blazer, from Mexico to plants in Kansas and Kentucky. Last year, GM built 889,072 cars in Mexican factories.
Over time, independent experts warned DailyMail.com that the move to the US could show up on the popular automaker's sticker prices. 'The challenge for GM will be the higher labor costs,' David Whiston, an automotive analyst at Morningstar, previously told DailyMail.com. 'The higher costs might need to be passed down to dealers and consumers.'
Still Whiston said the company will likely remain profitable this year, despite the major investments and tariff costs. The moves also come as GM doubles down on its EV consumer fleet. In the US, the company has axed two underperforming Cadillac SUVs from production. The company plans on transforming both plants into battery assembly lines, especially for its upcoming re-release of the Chevy Bolt.

ESPN reportedly selling equity stake for RedZone and other NFL properties
ESPN has reached a deal with the NFL to purchase RedZone, NFL Network and other league holdings, the Athletic reported on Friday. The NFL will receive equity in ESPN that 'is potentially worth billions' in exchange, according to the report. An official announcement is expected next week, ending a four-year period of complicated, on-and-off negotiations. Both sides declined to provide comment to the Athletic. In addition to RedZone and NFL Network, ESPN will gain access to seven more regular-season games and the NFL's fantasy football operations, as well as the potential to integrate sports betting and other special features. The NFL's equity stake in ESPN could be as much as 10%, CNBC first reported and the Athletic confirmed. An ESPN-NFL deal would require regulatory approval, a process that could take up to a year to complete. The two sides already have a cozy relationship. ESPN pays the NFL about $2.7bn per year to air a total of 25 games, including Monday Night Football. The network also holds the rights to the Super Bowls in 2027 and 2031. Friday's reported agreement comes as ESPN is preparing to launch its direct-to-consumer service, with subscribers paying $29.99 per month to bypass cable and satellite providers to view all of the network's programming through the ESPN app.

Walmart's Mexico CEO Caride steps down in surprise move
MEXICO CITY, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Walmart's Mexico and Central America chief executive, Ignacio Caride, will step down as CEO and from the board of directors after just over a year, the unit of the U.S. retailer said on Friday in a move that surprised analysts. Walmart's Chile CEO, Cristian Barrientos Pozo, will take over as interim chief executive until a recruitment process is completed, the company said in a statement. Barrientos Pozo, previously senior vice president of operations at Walmart de Mexico, brings more than 26 years of retail experience, including in expansion, store openings and digital transformation, the company said. The company, Mexico's largest retailer, operates Walmart, Sam's Club, and Bodega Aurrera stores across six countries. Known as Walmex, the company reported a 10% drop in net profit in its second-quarter results released in July, citing a slower-than-anticipated recovery in consumer spending despite an 8% increase in sales. Caride's resignation, while unexpected, could be a refreshing change, analysts said. JPMorgan analysts said that despite the "typical noise" around management changes, a refreshed leadership could be welcomed. "Investor concerns have been building around the retail execution weakening over the past year with poor results," the bank said in a note. Antonio Hernandez of Actinver research called the timing "unexpected but positive," especially given the company's declining margins in a competitive market. "We view favorably the company's fully hands-on approach to improve performance," he said. Santander analysts said that while the change could create short-term stock volatility, Barrientos' strong record and familiarity with the market "should help ease concerns during this transition period."
