Lakers plan on waiving Shake Milton in order to sign Marcus Smart
Right now, they don't have enough space under the first apron of the NBA's salary cap to sign Smart. But according to Shams Charania of ESPN, they're planning on waiving guard Shake Milton in order to clear some space.
"The Lakers plan to waive guard Shake Milton to create the roster spot to sign Smart, sources told ESPN," Charania wrote. "Milton's $3 million contract for next season would have become fully guaranteed Sunday."
Milton was thrown into the deal that brought Los Angeles forward Dorian Finney-Smith in late December. He played sporadically afterward and averaged 3.9 points on 43.3% field-goal shooting, 1.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 11.5 minutes a game as a member of the team.
Waiving him would open up a good portion of L.A.'s bi-annual exception. In order to open up the full bi-annual exception of $5.1 million, another move, such as waiving guard Jordan Goodwin or a consolidation trade, would need to be made.

He has recorded 17.5 sacks in each of the past two seasons, leading the league in sacks in 2024. A four-time Pro Bowler, the 30-year-old is consistently playing at a high level. Carter had a breakout campaign in 2024 and was one of the main reasons why the Eagles hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, but could he have an even better season in 2025? A top-10 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Carter had 42 total tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2024. He also had 53 total pressures, the ninth-best mark among all defensive linemen, per Pro Football Focus, so it's reasonable to think that Defensive Player of the Year contention is in Carter's future. Like Watt, Garrett has also been one of the league's best pass rushers in recent years and has a DPOY award under his belt already. The four-time All-Pro has recorded at least 12.0 sacks in each season since 2020, including a 14-sack season that helped him win DPOY in 2023. He had a 14-sack season again in 2024, recording the most pressures (83) as well. Parsons might steal the highest-paid non-QB title from Watt soon. After all, he's getting crushed by countless college football fans. Herbstreit has been ESPN's lead college football analyst since 2006. There's no question that his knowledge of the sport is second to none, but he does occasionally make a few remarks that really frustrate the public. Well, that was the case this week when he made an appearance on the "Net Positive" podcast with John Crist. Even though Herbstreit has been accused of showing bias in the broadcast booth, he claims he'd never openly cheer for a team on national television. He also called out "SportsCenter" anchor Elle Duncan for actively supporting the Georgia Bulldogs. We're not kidding. "You watch 'SportsCenter' and Elle Duncan is sitting there cheering for Georgia," Herbstreit said. "She's openly cheering. I'm not a fan of that personally. I think it hurts your credibility." Obviously, Duncan didn't appreciate that jab from Herbstreit. It seemed uncalled for considering it came out of nowhere. "Didn't have this on my bingo card for today but my fandom doesn't impact in any way what or how we talk about teams on air," Duncan wrote on X. "Ever. I… Also **whispers** I'm not the only one. So why I get singled out?" Not only were fans shocked by Herbstreit's remarks, they found them to be hypocritical. "This is rich coming from the biggest Clemson and Ohio State homer out there. I like Herby but cmon man. Have some self awareness," one fan said. "Says the guy who singlehandedly campaign and rooted for Alabama to get into the playoff over FSU two year ago. This is really rich coming from him," a second fan replied. Another fan said, "Wasn't he about to cry on air when Ohio State won the national title and he was calling the game?" "The actual crux of what Kirk said is correct — bias negatively impacts journalistic integrity — but calling out Elle Duncan when Kirk himself shows bias toward Ohio State is kind of insane," a fourth fan wrote.
