Dayton teen competes at National Scripps Spelling Bee
After winning the Wright State Regional Spelling Bee for the second consecutive year, Aurora Spisak advanced to the national stage, which culminates today after a two day run.
The field of 243 competing spellers from across the country included Spisak, who made it through the first two rounds of the tournament before a few mistakes in the third.
Spisak said the experience has been an exciting one, especially being able to represent Dayton.
'It means a lot. I love community so it means a lot to be able to be here for them,' Spisak said. 'I've had a great time. I love Bee Week man, it's so cool.'
This year marks the 100th annual National Bee. Today will see the finalist compete for the Scripps Cup.

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Carlsbad Caverns say they keep finding trash from decades ago, when they first opened to the public in 1923. Cavern officials say even though they find more and more modern-day trash, sometimes they stumble across historic trash like a Coca-Cola bottle that made it to the top of a rock far off the main corridor trail. What is guano and why was it a hot commodity in Carlsbad? Officials say the shape of this type of bottle is called a 'hobble-skirt,' which Coca-Cola started using in the year 1915. The bottle has the word 'Carlsbad' embossed at the bottom of the bottle, meaning this bottle was fabricated near the cave. This is not the first run-in with trash cavern staff have come across. In September 2024, an empty bag of Cheetos caused an uproar. Cavern officials say this small piece of trash has a big impact on the cavern; it can become a host for algae and mold. Why Kevin James doubted pal Ray Romano's ‘Everybody Loves Raymond' would work
Everybody loved Raymond — Kevin James, not so much. The comedian and actor admitted he initially had doubts about his friend Ray Romano's sitcom during the July 28 episode of 'Sibling Revelry with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson.' 'The fact that he got a show… I couldn't believe it because he's such a low-energy guy,' James, 60, said. 'Sitcom guys were, to me, like the big, wacky [characters]. I'm like this — this is death.
