Warmest Temperatures of the Year Expected Across Maryland This Week

Marylanders can expect a taste of summer this week as the region warms up to the highest temperatures of the year so far, with hazy skies and the return of 90-degree heat on the horizon.
After a string of cooler nights, conditions will turn noticeably milder Monday night. Skies will remain clear and temperatures are expected to settle in the lower to middle 50s across most of the state.
On Tuesday, skies will take on a hazy appearance, not from clouds, but due to a plume of Canadian wildfire smoke drifting into the region. While the smoke will remain elevated, it will reduce air quality slightly. The Maryland Department of the Environment has placed the region in the "moderate" category for air quality, meaning those with respiratory issues should take precautions. Afternoon highs will climb into the low to mid 80s under filtered sunshine.
The real heat arrives midweek. Wednesday through Friday could bring the first 90-degree readings of the year to many areas, with highs each afternoon reaching the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. Overnight lows will offer some relief, holding in the upper 50s to 60s.
A cold front will approach from the west by late Friday, bringing with it a slight chance for thunderstorms across western Maryland. However, much of central Maryland, including the Baltimore metro area, is expected to remain dry through Friday night.
Storm chances increase by Saturday as the front pushes farther east. Scattered thunderstorms—some of which could be strong—may develop during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs will still reach the mid 80s before the cooler air behind the front settles in.
Temperatures will dip slightly to start next week, but the cooldown will be brief. Forecasts suggest a return to the 80s for highs by the middle of next week, continuing a warm and unsettled early June pattern.
Residents should monitor daily forecasts, especially those with outdoor plans later in the week, as storm chances evolve heading into the weekend.

If you're looking to cut clutter and boost efficiency, knowing what not to buy can be just as valuable as knowing what to keep. These career cooks are the ultimate authority on which kitchen gadgets should get the boot -- especially when cupboard, counter and drawer space is limited. Onion holders Why: "These look like a weapon for Wolverine wannabes; it's meant to help you hold a whole onion and "chop" it. Instead, cut the onion in half to create a flat surface so it won't roll away. If you're trying to cut rings, save the $14 and stick a fork in the root and hold the fork." Yipengge/Getty Why: "A tool just for separating yolks is unnecessary for most home cooks." The only exception may be this one, and even that is just for yolks. Err, I mean yucks. Garlic peeler tube Why: "Rolling garlic cloves in a silicone tube may work but requires storing a single-purpose gadget." What to try instead: Smashing garlic cloves with a chef knife is quicker and more reliable. 12. Pizza scissors Chef Ingraham says skip the scissors on pizza night. Zoranm/Getty Why: "A pizza cutter or knife works better and faster. These scissors are gimmicky, awkward to clean and take up more space than they're worth." What to try instead: KitchenAid's stainless-steel pizza wheel. 13. Herb scissors Why: "They're hard to clean and don't offer a huge advantage over a sharp chef's knife. Plus, they tend to crush delicate herbs more than slice them." What to try instead: Made In's 8-inch Chef Knife. 14. Electric egg cooker Why: "Boiling eggs in a pot is straightforward and flexible. The electric version just adds clutter unless you boil eggs constantly and hate using a stove." What to try instead: This 1-minute hack for making poached eggs in the microwave. 15. Butter cutter and dispenser A good butter knife works just as well and requires less space and maintenance. Williams Sonoma Why: "It slices sticks of butter into pats… but why? MIAMI – A storm system spinning off the southeastern U.s. coastline has caught the attention of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) with a small chance of developing into a tropical system. Much like what was previously known as Invest 93L earlier this month, a trough of low pressure at the southern end of a frontal boundary is forecast to move west-southwestward into the north-central portion of the Gulf, according to the NHC. There, environmental conditions could allow for some slow development if the system remains far enough offshore. How To Watch Fox Weather However, by this weekend, the system is likely to move inland, ending its chances for development. Though much like Invest 93L, the threat of heavy rain and thunderstorms will persist if the trough eventually develops into a tropical system. The NHC is currently just giving a low chance of development. In terms of rainfall totals, about 2–3 inches could fall across much of the northern Gulf Coast, with some locally higher amounts. Widespread flash flooding isn't expected, but isolated flooding could pop up in pockets of heavy precipitation sitting over an area for too long. Download The Free Fox Weather App The disturbance may have less of a chance to develop when compared to Invest 93L because the previous event had more of an organized structure when compared to the current system. That said, the southerly flow along the northern Gulf will likely last for days, leading to an increased risk for rip currents along area beaches. A medium risk of rip currents is expected along the Florida Panhandle from Destin to Port St. Joe, as well as along the Atlantic coast from Daytona Beach southward through Melbourne and West Palm Beach, through the last weekend of July. 7 Facts To Know About Hurricanes Flooding has already been experienced in parts of the South Carolina Low Country as the combination of higher tides and heavy rainfall made streets around Charleston look more like ponds. Downtown Charleston received just over an inch of rainfall on Monday, but with nowhere for the water to go, flooding was reported on several roadways.
