Obama to Democrats: ‘Just toughen up'

The Hill11 hours ago
Former President Obama's message to Democrats is to 'just toughen up' amid frustration with the political landscape under President Trump.
'I think it's going to require a little bit less navel-gazing and a little less whining and being in fetal positions. And it's going to require Democrats to just toughen up,' Obama said in remarks at a private fundraiser Friday in New Jersey, according to excerpts of his remarks obtained by CNN.
'Don't tell me you're a Democrat, but you're kind of disappointed right now, so you're not doing anything. No, now is exactly the time that you get in there and do something,' he said.
Obama's comments marked his first fundraising appearance since Democrats' 2024 losses, as the party searches for a new way forward as it grapples with a GOP-controlled Washington in Trump's second term.
'What's being asked of us is make some effort to stand up for the things that you think are right. And be willing to be a little bit uncomfortable in defense of your values. And in defense of the country. And in defense of the world that you want to leave to your children and your grandchildren,' Obama said.
'And if we all do that, if we do our jobs over the next year and a half, then I think we will rebuild momentum, and we will position ourselves to get this country moving in the direction it should.'
The appearance in New Jersey, alongside Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin and gubernatorial candidate Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.), comes ahead of New Jersey's gubernatorial and state legislative races this year.
'Stop looking for the quick fix. Stop looking for the messiah. You have great candidates running races right now. Support those candidates,' Obama said, saying the off-year elections in New Jersey and Virginia could be 'a big jumpstart for where we need to go.'
Sherrill, who represents New Jersey's 11th Congressional District, won the Democratic nomination for governor of New Jersey in early June. She is looking to succeed Murphy, who is term-limited, and will face off against Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the fall.

‘We're not buying it': Trump ties Ukraine aid to America First

'The president's view is Russia is going to win, it's a matter of how long it takes,' said the senior White House official, granted anonymity to discuss the president's thinking. 'Russia has the bigger economy, has the bigger military, has more than enough bodies to grow into the meat grinder, and just doesn't care. And although they are making slow progress, they are still making progress. The president just wants to stop the killing.' Even as Trump wants to up the pressure on Moscow, bucking the isolationist wing of the MAGA movement, he is insisting that this latest move aligns with his 'America First' strategy and fits into a decades-long view that America has been ripped off by allies and that Europe, in particular, has gotten a free ride on defense. Trump, during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday, exaggerated how much money the U.S. has already spent on aid to Ukraine and emphasized that Europeans would finally pay their fair share. 'We're not buying it, but we will manufacture it, and they're going to be paying for it,' Trump said, referencing 'very rich' European allies. 'They feel very strongly about it, and we feel strongly about it too, but we're in for a lot of money, and we just, we don't want to do [it] any more.' The Pentagon's top policy official, Elbridge Colby, posted his support on X soon after the announcement, emphasizing the 'America First' aspect. 'Central to President Trump's common sense, America First message is that our alliances have to be fair and equitable for them to be sustainable,' Colby wrote. 'This is eminently reasonable but was treated for many years as heresy. Yet now with the historic NATO commitment we see that it can work — and will leave not only Americans but our European allies better off.' But two senior administration officials, granted anonymity to discuss the president's turnabout on Ukraine, said Trump's response is largely a reaction to Putin's indifference to attempts to broker a peace deal.

Oil edges down as market contemplates potential sanctions, tariffs

By Anjana Anil (Reuters) -Oil prices edged down on Tuesday as the market digested U.S. President Donald Trump's 50-day deadline for Russia to end the Ukraine war and avoid sanctions on buyers of its oil, while worries continued to linger over Trump's trade tariffs. Brent crude futures fell 5 cents to $69.16 a barrel by 0000 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell to $66.89, down 9 cents. Both contracts settled more than $1 lower in the previous session. Trump announced new weapons for Ukraine on Monday, and threatened sanctions on buyers of Russian exports unless Moscow agrees to a peace deal in 50 days. Oil prices had climbed at the news of potential sanctions, but later gave up these gains as the 50-day deadline raised hopes that sanctions could be avoided, and traders dwelled on whether the U.S. would actually impose steep tariffs on countries continuing to trade with Russia. "The pause eased concerns that direct sanctions on Russia could disrupt crude oil flows. Sentiment was also weighed down by rising trade tensions," ANZ senior commodity strategist Daniel Hynes wrote in a note to clients. Trump said on Saturday he would impose a 30% tariff on most imports from the European Union and Mexico from August 1, adding to similar warnings for other countries and leaving them less than three weeks to hammer out framework deals that could lower the threatened tariff rates. Tariffs risk slowing down economic growth, which could sap global fuel demand and drag oil prices lower. Elsewhere, oil demand is set to stay "very strong" through the third quarter, keeping the market snugly balanced in the near term, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' secretary general said, according to a Russian media report. Goldman Sachs on Monday raised its oil price outlook for the second half of 2025, pointing to potential supply disruptions, shrinking oil inventories in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, and production constraints in Russia.

Trump claims to have won a fifth golf championship since his inauguration 10 weeks ago

The end of the golf season in South Florida does not mean the end of Donald Trump's claims on the course. The President has shifted his golf game from Trump International West Palm Beach to his course in Bedminster, New Jersey. But the change in scenery apparently has not slowed down the 79-year-old when it comes to declaring himself a champion. Trump boasted on his Truth Social website on Sunday that he won the member-member championship at Bedminster with partner Tommy Urciuoli. "In between meetings and phone calls, it was a Great Honor to win the Member-Member Championship, at Trump National, Bedminster (Gross, no strokes), with Tommy Urciuoli as my partner. The Many other competitors were not only great Golfers, but also terrific people!" Trump wrote. Trump has taken at least 8 Florida golf trips in last 10 weeks Trump has worked diligently on his golf game since starting his second term. In the first 10 weeks since the Jan. 20 inauguration, Trump had at least eight golf outings to his courses in Palm Beach County, Florida. And his boasts now have become legendary. Trump, who never loses an event at one of his tournaments, once said he: Trump now is claiming five championships this year, including teaming with Finnish President Alexander Stubb to win the Men's Member-Guest tournament in late March at Trump International West Palm Beach. He also was declared the winner at the Senior Club Championship at Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter one week later. In March, while posting he won the Club Championship at Trump International West Palm Beach, Trump added it would "probably" be his last. He's up to three more claims since then. Trump was asked about his handicap in March while aboard Air Force One. "Very low," he said. "I've a very low handicap." That was after he announced he had won the Senior Club Championship at his course outside of West Palm Beach. "Very good," when asked how the golf tournament was. "Because I won. It's good to win. You heard I won, right? Did you hear I won? I like to win." In his 2023 post about carding a 67 at Bedminster, Trump said: "For some reason, I am just a good golfer/athlete − I have won many Club Championships, and it is always a great honor!"
