SC orders status quo in Ahmedabad slum demolition case, Assures to pay rent differential

New Delhi, Apr 25 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Friday directed that status quo be maintained at a slum site in Chharanagar, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where demolition was allegedly being carried out despite the Court's earlier protective order.
A Bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh passed the interim order while hearing a plea by 49 slum dwellers who claimed that they were being forcibly evicted without proper notice or rehabilitation, in violation of the Gujarat Slum Areas (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1973.
The matter was first mentioned before the Court on Thursday, when temporary protection from demolition was granted till Monday (April 28). However, after reports emerged that demolition activities had resumed at the site, the petitioner's counsel, AoR Sumitra Kumari Choudhary, urgently mentioned the matter again, seeking enforcement of the interim relief.
The Bench questioned the petitioner's counsel regarding relocation of slum dwellers as part of the area's redevelopment plan. When it was submitted that the rent compensation offered of Rs 6,000 per month was insufficient even for a slum accommodation, the Court advised the petitioners to accept the available alternative housing, and assured that the Court would address the rent differential if necessary.
Posting the matter for detailed hearing on April 28, the Court emphasized that no further demolition should take place in the interim.
The petitioners had earlier approached the Gujarat High Court challenging a public notice dated January 29, 2025, which required them to vacate their homes within 30 days.
They contended that individual notices were not served, and only a public notice was issued, violating their rights under the Slum Act. They also alleged that demolition began on March 20, 2025, without proper procedure.
The State of Gujarat, in response, argued that the area had been declared a 'Slum Clearance Area' in 2019, and that all structures were unauthorized. A work order had been issued to a private developer, and multiple public notices were pasted at the site. The State maintained that the petitioners were attempting to stall a long-pending redevelopment project, which had already benefited hundreds of residents.
The High Court had rejected the slum dwellers' plea, holding that due procedure was followed and over 508 beneficiaries were already relocated and awaiting new housing. It further observed that seven residential towers had already been constructed, undermining the claim that the petitioners were unaware of the redevelopment process.
The High Court had granted 30 days' time for voluntary vacation, provided the petitioners filed an undertaking.
Now, with the Supreme Court stepping in and indicating sympathy toward the plight of the slum residents, particularly on the issue of inadequate rent compensation, the case is set to be further heard on April 28, with the Court's assurance of balanced relief keeping the demolition in abeyance till then.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has revealed a large-scale international cyber fraud and financial crime syndicate operating out of Pune and Mumbai. According to the CBI, the accused were targeting foreign nationals, particularly US citizens, by impersonating officials from agencies like the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and the Indian High Commission. Victims were threatened with legal consequences and coerced into paying amounts ranging from $500 to $3,000 through gift cards or Bitcoin syndicate operated an illegal call centre from a covert location in Pune since January 2025. CBI registered the case on July 24 against unknown public sector bank officials and four private individuals for their involvement in the VoIP-based calls were made to unsuspecting US citizens using contact leads acquired from vendors on messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Signal. These vendors also generated toll-free numbers that redirected victims to the fraudulent call agency revealed that the fraudsters were laundering proceeds estimated at Rs 3–4 crore monthly through mule accounts, cryptocurrency, and hawala channels. Bank officials allegedly facilitated the opening of fake accounts with forged KYC documents, bypassing RBI call centre employees were paid in cash-routed through hawala networks from both domestic and US sources. These workers were housed in multiple flats across conducted searches at seven locations, including the illegal call centre. Officials seized 27 mobile phones, 17 laptops, and other incriminating digital equipment. 'Scrutiny of these mobile phones and laptops reveals that these accused persons were using caller services found on social media platforms like Signal and WhatsApp,' CBI said.A further investigation into the racket is ongoing.- Ends

Land acquisition for the long-pending Angamali-Sabarimala Railway line, also called Sabari Rail project, is likely to begin soon as recent discussions between Kerala government and Railways Ministry indicate a renewed push to implement the project. In a written reply to questions from Congress's Jebi Mather Hisham in RS Friday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that in a recent meeting with CM Pinarayi Vijayan, the state government has been requested to begin land acquisition by using its share of 50% of the project cost. Vaishnaw said that once land acquisition by the state starts, work can proceed further. The 111-km Angamali-Sabarimala railway line project via Erumeli was sanctioned in 1997-98. It is among the crucial railway projects in Kerala, which is expected to cater to the pilgrims visiting Sabrimala temple. Erumeli is the gateway to the famous hill temple. However, only the work on Angamali-Kaladi (7 km) line and long lead works on Kaladi-Perumbavoor (10 km) were taken up so far. Vaishnaw said that further works could not be taken up due to protests against land acquisition and fixing of alignment of the line, court cases against the project and inadequate support from the state government. The project's estimated cost has been revised to `3,801 crore by Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) and submitted to Kerala government in December, 2023. In August 2024, the Kerala government gave its conditional consent to the estimate. Later, the Railways Ministry asked the state government to give unconditional consent for sharing the cost. The ministry also asked the Kerala government to enter into a tripartite MoU among the state government, Ministry of Railways and RBI for the project. 'However, in a memorandum submitted by Kerala government to the Railway Minister on June 3, 2025, it has been intimated that the Kerala government does not agree to enter into tripartite agreement,' Vaishnaw said. An MoU was inked between the state and the Railways Ministry in January 2016 but work could not be started due to ambiguity over financing and sharing of total cost. Gadwal: A wave of protests broke out in Jogulamba Gadwal district headquarters on Thursday, as several civil rights organizations, Dalit associations, and political leaders gathered in front of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue demanding the immediate arrest of Constable Raghunath Goud. He is accused of cheating a Dalit woman named Priyanka from Palwancha town in Khammam district under the pretext of love and marriage. According to protestors, Raghunath Goud, who recently secured a job in the police department, had made false promises to Priyanka, convincing her of his intention to marry her. However, after obtaining his job, he reportedly rejected her citing her caste, referring to her as a 'low-caste SC (Madiga) woman,' and refused to fulfill his promise of marriage. The protesters, visibly outraged, accused the constable of manipulating the woman emotionally and socially, and demanded that a case be immediately registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. They called upon the authorities to arrest Raghunath Goud without delay and ensure justice for the victim. Representatives of Dalit organizations stated that such caste-based discrimination and exploitation should not be tolerated, especially by someone serving in a law enforcement role. They urged the district administration and police department to take strict and swift action against the accused to uphold justice and prevent further erosion of trust in the system. The protest at Ambedkar Chowk drew participation from social activists, leaders of Dalit and caste-based associations, political party representatives, and local citizens, all united in their demand for accountability and justice for Priyanka. The district police have not yet issued an official statement on the matter. However, public pressure continues to mount, and further demonstrations have been warned if the authorities fail to act promptly.
