Kovalica ends winning drought in thrilling Q22 win at Eagle Farm
Prominent Queensland owner Nev Morgan never doubted Kovalica would win another race.
He just didn't know when.
But the stars aligned on Saturday and Kovalica returned to the scene of his Group 1 Queensland Derby triumph of 2023 – the last time he won a race – to score the rich Q22 (2200m).

But it was far from an easy watch to break the long winning drought as Kovalica dived at New Endeavour on the line and no one at Eagle Farm had much of an idea who had won.
Not even Morgan, who thought he might have been narrowly beaten.
But when the judge put the winner's number up, Kovalica was in the frame.
Kovalica may have not won for a long time and he has often been a tease.
But in fairness, he has raced at a high level including tackling a Cox Plate, Melbourne Cup, Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Doncaster Miles.
• 'The boys have done it': Hayes proud of sons' landmark Stradbroke success
'Of course I thought he would win again,' Morgan, who owns Kovalica with fellow Queenslander and great mate David Devine, said.
'Even before today, he had won $3.3m in prizemoney.
'He races in all the good races.
'I hope he could even be a Melbourne Cup horse this year, he only got beaten four lengths in the race last year.
'The maestro (Chris Waller) will work all that out.
'I didn't think this horse had won on the line today but my son-in-law said he thought he had, so I'm glad he was right.'

Winning rider Nash Rawiller also had no idea whether Kovalica had broken the drought.
'It was a long ride back to scale, making sure that I'd got there,' Rawiller said.
'I feel like I've redeemed myself for saying he'd win the Melbourne Cup last year.
'What a horse he's been.
'We made a call during the week – as late as Tuesday morning – to put the blinkers on today.
'You could tell in the run that he was going to do something.
'I've had a bit of a shit time lately, so I feel like I've bounced right back in a big way.'
Plenty have questioned whether Kovalica would get back to the winner's stall, but not Waller and his team.
'We haven't lost faith in him and he's been a good horse without winning,' Waller said.
'It took the length of the Eagle Farm straight to get there.
'That's his first win for a couple of years. He's been working to something good.'

Brisbane Cup win fuels Melbourne Cup aspirations for Campaldino
- Daniel Pace
Campaldino will be set for the race that stops a nation following his impressive victory in the $400,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
The four-year-old gelding sat behind a dawdling speed early in the race before powering ahead of the pack to finish more than a length ahead of the Chris Waller-trained pair Etna Rosso ($3.70) and Manzoice ($12) to rubber-stamp his passage to the $8m Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November.
'You've got to look at that type of race for him,' said Adrian Bott, who trains in partnership with racing royalty Gai Waterhouse.
'He saw that out (3200m trip) strongly. Obviously we didn't make any grand plans before today but that (Melbourne Cup) is always in the back of your mind.
'We just wanted to get through this campaign first and he's done an excellent job.
'We were only focused on this campaign but now's the time to go back and analyse what path we take to the Cup.'
In a nice twist of fate, Campaldino used to share a trackwork tie-up row with Pier, the winner of the earlier The Wayne Wilson over a mile, in Matamata, New Zealand.
'He's an amazing, progressive horse,' Bott said.
'He's come a long way and that tops off the campaign nicely. He can't have too long off but he's had some nice conditioning this preparation and we'll try and work backwards from the Melbourne Cup.
'He's still learning what it is all about. Even when he hit the front I was worried about him getting there too early. There is still progression (to come).'
Jockey Tim Clark was back on Campaldino after guiding him to a 1¾-length victory in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Cup (2400m) on a heavy Eagle Farm track two weeks ago.
'Since the blinkers have been removed he has been much better,' Clark said.
'That has helped him be so strong at the end of his races.
'He's a pleasure to ride and another good find out of New Zealand. He has come here and really found his mojo now.
'He's shooting through the grades nicely. He's thrived with the sun on his back and he can run a strong two miles.
'When he had clean air he really dragged me forward. He had energy stored in the run and he picked up when I let him go.'

Gilbert Gardiner's best bets for Flemington on Saturday
Form analyst Gilbert Gardiner presents his $200 betting strategy, plus quaddie picks, for the nine-race card at Flemington on Saturday. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ FOUR-PLAY: $200 BETTING STRATEGY RACE 4: SILVER BOWL SERIES FINAL (1600m) $25 each way FROM A DISTANCE (8) at $7/$2.20 Four starts into the three-year-old's first racing campaign some query, but loved the way the Needs Further gelding drove through an interrupted run last start to finish second behind the in-form Taken. Not the clearest path but stuck to the task and got within a length on the post. Favourite KNOBELAS (9) has been super impressive the past two starts, winning by big margins, but faces stronger opposition here. From A Distance should be in the finish again somewhere along with Symon Wilde-trained stablemate DARKBONEE (10). RACE 7: MAHOGANY CHALLENGE FINAL (2500m) $100 win SHOCKLETZ (3) at $4.20 Did everything but win last start at Flemington, sustained a strong run from back in the field with a big weight to finish second. Four starts under the belt for the campaign including the past two at 2000m. The 2500m trip on Saturday looks ideal and gets in a fraction (½ kg) better on the weight scale. Shockletz powered home to win at Flemington two starts back. Wary of BEARINGS (16), finished strongly last start at Flemington. POLITELY DUN (1) the class horse in the field back from a solid Queensland Derby performance, placed eighth. RACE 9: LEILANI SERIES FINAL (1400m) $25 each way RUNNING BY (1) at $8/$2.50 Taken a couple of runs to rebuild fitness and looks incredibly well-placed back in Fillies and Mares grade on Saturday, having taken on the boys the past two starts. Last start third behind Hughes at Sandown, and that horse is not without a chance of winning the Listed Winter Championship Series Final on Saturday. Running By has won two of eight starts at 1400m previously and placed on another four occasions. Drawn to get a lovely run and could be hard to hold out despite STYLISH (5) being a worthy favourite. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ QUADZILLA LEG 1, RACE 6 SHE'S AN ARTIST (5) is clearly the horse to beat – won her two career starts by a combined nine lengths and done so in electric times on each occasion. Bolted in last start 1100m at Flemington by 3.8 lengths. Rising in weight and distance but would only need to hold form to win again. FIELDELO (8) chased the favourite last start and should not be overlooked. More suited at 1200m and has slight weight swing on She's An Artist. 1ST LEG 5, 8 LEG 2, RACE 7 SHOCKLETZ (2) tried hard last start at Flemington but a big weight and sustained gallop ultimately got the better of the emerging stayer. Suited up to 2500m on Saturday and hard fit. BEARINGS (16) caught the eye late last start to run fifth in the same race as Shockletz. Bearings won a 2230m race – albeit Newcastle Class 1 three back – on a Heavy deck so the extra distance – up to 2500m – unlikely to be an issue. Respect POLITELY DUN (1). Won impressively at Flemington two back and then luckless in the Group 1 Queensland Derby. 2ND LEG 1, 2, 16 LEG 3, RACE 8 OH TOO GOOD (10) could not have been any more impressive last start at Flemington, travelled behind the speed and walloped them. JIMMY THE BEAR (3) has enjoyed a peak preparation. Should be in the finish somewhere. Include MUNHAMEK (6). 3RD LEG 3, 6, 10 LEG 4, RACE 9 STYLISH (5) bolted in last start and primed to go again. Luckless start prior so could easily be three for three for the campaign. RUNNING BY (1) ready to peak third-up? Scratched from an easier option last Saturday due to a wide barrier and saved for this. Back against her own age too. Definite winning chance. SASSY BOOM (4) drawn poorly but not without a chance. MOLLYNICKERS (3) has raced well without much success – deserve a win. FOURTH LEG 1, 3, 4, 5 FLEMINGTON QUADDIE Race 6: 5, 8 Race 7: 1, 2, 16 Race 8: 3, 6, 10 Race 9: 1, 3, 4, 5 COST $100 FOR 104 per cent SKINNY QUADDIE Start with SHE'S AN ARTIST (5) and FIELDELO (8). In the second leg take POLITELY DUN (1) and SHOCKLETZ (2). Then in the third leg take OH TOO GOOD (10). Come home with RUNNING BY (1) and STYLISH (5). NRL, rugby union and A-League venue Allianz Stadium could be set to close leaving Sydney FC stranded
Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Allianz Stadium could be sensationally closed and unavailable for sport this coming summer. The $828 million venue only reopened in 2022, but is now awaiting results on a report into the massive drainage issues the facility has faced over the past three years. Watch every game of The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup LIVE on Kayo Sports | New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer. The investigation comes after disastrous flooded playing surfaces this season and last when the Sydney Roosters, Waratahs and NSW Blues women's side hosted games. A decision is expected to be made by the end of the month after Allianz operators Service NSW responded to matter. The worst possible scenario is if the issue is due to the stadium's underground drainage system, as feared, it could take months to rectify. Player safety at Allianz Stadium for the State of Origin women's series came under heavy scrutiny. Photo:. The move will mean Sydney FC may have to find a temporary new home for the upcoming 2025/26 A-League season, most likely Leichhardt Oval according to AAP, causing significant commercial concerns. The A-League and the Sky Blues have already looked to adjust the schedule to work around major concerts and events, creating another hurdle for the side. 'The comprehensive review into the playing surface and drainage system at Allianz Stadium is expected to be finalised later this month,' a Venues NSW spokesperson said. 'As we are awaiting the results of the investigation, no decision has been made on what remediation works are required.' The stadium's neighbouring venue the Sydney Cricket Ground last week also come under massive scrutiny during a Round 16 clash between the Sydney Swans and Western Bulldogs, which also saw drainage issues causing a slippery surfaces for players. New turf has been re-laid the past two summers but conditions have only worsened. The worst of it came in May after a rain-soaked women's State of Origin match saw players surrounded by pools of water in near unplayable conditions. The review comes after independent MP Mark Latham raised his concerns in parliament last month. The MP questioned why the issued had persisted for so long and had concerns for player safety and insurance. Originally published as Fears Allianz Stadium report could see venue closed for summer

NRL 2025: Cameron Ciraldo has to work out Lachlan Galvin's role after Bulldogs loss
Don't miss out on the headlines from NRL. Followed categories will be added to My News. A frustrated Cameron Ciraldo admits his side hasn't reached its attacking potential yet this season, with the Bulldogs coach disappointed in how his team handled the second half on Friday night as the Broncos stormed home to beat them 22-18. The Bulldogs led 18-0 in the second half but conceded the final four tries as a new-look backline failed to fire the premiership fancies with the game on the line. All eyes were on mid-season recruit Lachlan Galvin who was initially named on the bench but started at five-eighth alongside Toby Sexton, with Matt Burton switching to centre given they had Stephen Crichton and Jacob Kiraz away on Origin duty. Galvin set up a try with his right boot but made two errors and didn't gel well with his teammates on the left edge in what was his second start since leaving the Wests Tigers. Canterbury's attack is an easy focus given they were leading the league before Galvin arrived, with the next two months set to determine what their spine looks like heading into the finals. Lachlan Galvin had a mixed night as questions remain over how best to use him. Picture:'I don't think our attack has reached its potential all year, so we're searching for that, as most clubs are,' Ciraldo said. 'We're searching for what works. We've had a lot of turnover with different back-rowers and things like that so we're still searching. 'We've got nine or 10 weeks to go to figure that out, but you've got to learn your lessons quickly. We didn't learn ours from last week and take those into tonight.' While the halves conundrum will dominate the headlines for the rest of the season, Ciraldo doesn't have to worry about being asked questions about Sexton's future after the halfback signed a deal to play for Catalans. Sexton joined the club midway through the 2023 season and has done a fine job in the halves, but his role became a major talking point once Galvin signed. 'He came and saw me last night (Thursday) and told me about it,' Ciraldo said. 'It's really good for him and his family and I'm stoked for him because he's worked really hard. Toby Sexton will head to the Super League next season. Picture:'He was playing for Tweed Heads a couple of years ago and came down to the Bulldogs to get an opportunity. 'He had to bide his time at the start and then got his opportunity, and he's done really well. 'It's a great opportunity for him over there, but he was really clear that he's not thinking about that right now. He's thinking about how we get better at the back end of the season, and that's what we're all thinking.' Ciraldo has a week to decide who he should pick in the halves for their next game, with the coach disappointed in his side's second-half performance after failing to learn lessons from last week's loss to Penrith. 'I haven't thought too far past that game. We've got to go back and review that,' he said. 'There was a lot to like about what we did in the first half, but there are some lessons there. I'm filthy that we didn't learn our lessons from last week. 'We had to stand up and be better this week than what we were last week in those areas that we practised all week, but we weren't. 'I thought we were trying to force it too much. 'I thought the Broncos were defending really well at the start of the second half and we earned some possession, but we had to keep asking questions and play the field position game. 'We didn't, we tried to force it and it probably played into their hands.'
