Iran charges French detainees Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris with spying for Israel

France 2417 hours ago
French nationals Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris have been charged with "spying" for Israel, a Western diplomatic source and family sources told AFP.
Iranian officials have also charged the pair with "conspiracy to overthrow the regime" and "corruption on earth", the diplomatic source and Kohler's sister told AFP.
"All we know is that they have seen a judge who confirmed the three charges," said Kohler's sister.
News of the charges comes a day after a French diplomat was able to visit the two French nationals, whose families had demanded proof that they were alive after Israeli strikes.
The French foreign ministry did not specify where the visit occurred, amid uncertainty over the couple's whereabouts.
The fate of Kohler and Paris had been unknown since Israel targeted Tehran's Evin prison in an air strike last week, before a US-proposed ceasefire between the Middle East foes came into force.
Iran's judiciary said the Israeli strike on the prison had killed at least 79 people.
It has also said the Iranian prison authority transferred inmates out of Evin prison, without specifying their number or identifying them.
Several women prisoners have been transferred to Qarchak prison for women outside Tehran, which has a notorious reputation for its conditions.

Kohler, 40, and Paris, her 72-year-old partner, have been held in Iran since May 2022 on espionage charges their families reject.
Iran is believed to hold around 20 European nationals, many of whose cases have never been publicised, in what some Western governments including France describe as a strategy of hostage-taking aimed at extracting concessions from the West.
Three Europeans, who have not been identified, have also been arrested in the wake of the current conflict, two of whom are accused of spying for Israel, according to the authorities.

France demands immediate release of couple held in Iran, warns of sanctions

France said on Thursday it would decide whether to reimpose sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme depending on whether Tehran released two French detainees charged with spying for Israel. "Freeing Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris is an absolute priority for us," Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said. "We have always told our interlocutors from the Iranian regime that any decisions on sanctions will be conditional on resolving this issue." Iran officially suspended its co-operation with the United Nations nuclear watchdog on Wednesday. The move came after a 12-day conflict last month between Iran and Israel, which saw unprecedented Israeli and US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities and sharply escalated tensions between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The United States and other Western countries, along with Israel, accuse Iran of seeking a nuclear weapon. Tehran denies that, but has gradually broken away from its commitments under a 2015 nuclear deal it struck with world powers, after the United States pulled out of it in 2018. Israel has maintained ambiguity about its own atomic arsenal, neither officially confirming nor denying it exists, but the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimates its arsenal amounts to 90 nuclear warheads. The landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal provided Tehran with sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its atomic programme to be monitored by the UN nuclear watchdog. The deal included the possibility of UN sanctions being reimposed through a mechanism called "snapback" if Iran failed to fulfil its commitments, an option that expires in October. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has urged European signatories of the 2015 deal to trigger the "snapback" mechanism and reinstate all UN sanctions on Iran. Kohler, 40, and Paris, her 72-year-old partner, have been held in Iran since May 2022 on espionage charges their families reject. But Iran has now charged the pair with spying for Israel's intelligence agency Mossad, diplomatic and family sources told AFP on Wednesday. They were also accused of "corruption of Earth" and "plotting to overthrow the regime", the sources said. All three charges carry the death penalty. Tehran has not confirmed the new charges. A French diplomatic source described the allegations as "completely unfounded". Iran is believed to hold around 20 European nationals, many of whose cases have never been publicised, in what some Western governments including France describe as a strategy of hostage-taking aimed at extracting concessions from the West. Three other Europeans, who have not been identified, have also been arrested in the wake of the current conflict, two of whom are accused of spying for Israel, according to the authorities.

'This is not life': Gazans reel from Israeli strike on school-turned-shelter

Tattered clothes hung from the blackened exterior of the building in western Gaza City, as rubble still smouldered below in the morning light. Bloodstains dotted the ground strewn with the remnants of daily life. Clothing, metal chairs, tins of food and part of an electric fan lay amongst the wreckage, AFP footage showed. "This is not a life," said Umm Yassin Abu Awda, a Gaza City resident who stood amongst mourners at the city's Al-Shifa Hospital following the strike. "Either you strike us with a nuclear bomb and end it all, or people's conscience needs to finally wake up." Nearly all of Gaza's population has been displaced at least once during the nearly 21-month war, which has created dire humanitarian conditions for the more than two million people living there. Many have sought shelter in school buildings, but these have repeatedly come under Israeli attacks that the military often says target Hamas militants hiding among civilians. Mohammad al-Mughayyir, an official from Gaza's civil defence agency, told AFP that most of the 12 killed in Thursday's strike were women and children. He also reported a large number of injuries in the "Israeli air strike on the Mustafa Hafez School, which shelters displaced persons, in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood". They were among 25 people that the agency reported killed by Israeli forces on Thursday morning in the Palestinian territory, where Israel has recently expanded its military operations. 'Annihilate us' Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it was looking into the report. Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence. At Mustafa Hafez School, a colourful mural on a wall next to the wreckage showed a smiling boy walking past a tree and a woman next to a Palestinian flag. A small group sat on chairs in what was once the playground of the school. Inside the building, a group of young boys surveyed the damage and climbed on upturned furniture while others sifted through the debris. Crowds of mourners gathered at Al-Shifa Hospital, where men and women wept over the bodies of the dead. "We have no life left. Let them just annihilate us so we can finally rest," said one woman who lost relatives in the strike and did not give her name. "There's nothing left for us. My two daughters are gone -- and now my niece, along with her six children and her husband, were burned to death," she said, her voice breaking with emotion. At least 57,130 people have been killed in Israel's military campaign in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The United Nations considers its figures reliable. The war was triggered by Palestinian militant group Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, also mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.
