Cricket legends Brian Lara and Viv Richards to help beleaguered West Indies team
WICB president Kishore Shallow on Tuesday said he plans to enlist Caribbean cricket greats such as Viv Richards and Brian Lara to help a West Indian lineup that scored just 27 runs in its second innings – one run short of the all-time test record for low totals —
while losing the third of three tests
to Australia.
The batting collapse continued a pattern for the West Indian test team — it hasn't won a test series since 2022-23, when it beat Zimbabwe in the Caribbean.
Since then it has drawn three and lost five series. It was swept in 3-0 over the last few weeks at home against Australia, culminating in the
humiliating defeat
in the third test on Monday.
Shallow had seen enough.
'The result hurts deeply, not only because of how we lost, but because of what West Indies Cricket has always represented to our people: pride, identity, and possibility,' Shallow said in a statement.
'There will be some sleepless nights ahead for many of us, including the players, who I know feel this loss just as heavily. We are in a rebuilding phase, steadily investing in the next generation, and reigniting the spirit that has long made West Indies cricket a force in the world.'
Indeed it was a force. By the late 1970s, the Caribbean side was recognized as unofficial world champions, a title they retained throughout the 1980s thanks to batters like Richards complemented by feared bowlers like Curtly Ambrose.
Now, Richards, known fondly at times as Sir Viv after receiving a British knighthood for his services to cricket, will be part of the rescue package. Shallow said he had ordered an emergency meeting to review the Australia test series, 'particularly the final match.'
Some of the fast bowling produced against Australia in the series resembled the days when West Indies' pacemen dominated the world of cricket, but batting deficiencies let the team down badly.
'To strengthen the discussions, I have extended invitations to three of our greatest batsmen ever: Clive Lloyd, Vivian Richards and Brian Lara,' Shallow said. 'They will join past greats Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes and Ian Bradshaw.'
Lloyd, who is 80, was a West Indies captain and leading figure of the team's overwhelming success in his era. He scored 19 centuries in his 110-test career that ended in 1984. The 73-year-old Richards scored 24 centuries in 121 test matches.
Lara, who retired in 2006, scored 34 centuries in 131 tests. He holds the record for the most runs scored in a test innings —
400 not out
against England in 2004. It remains the only quadruple century in test cricket.
It's not clear whether the support group will help in the shorter formats of ODI and Twenty20 cricket. West Indies
have had 3-0 series losses
this year to England in both formats. On the plus side, the Caribbean team drew an ODI series and won a
T20 series
in Ireland.
Shallow insists he's not paying lip service to the chaos surrounding the test team, which played its first test matches in England in 1928, losing the series 3-0.
'This engagement is not ceremonial,' Shallow said. 'These are men who helped define our golden eras, and their perspectives will be invaluable as we shape the next phase of our cricket development.'

Sky Sports: Man Utd star has been brought up in conversations by UCL finalists this summer
Jadon Sancho is yet to seal his long-awaited Manchester United exit, despite being made available for sale since his Chelsea loan ended. Remarkably, Chelsea even went as far as paying a £5 million penalty to send the forward back to Manchester and bypass the £25m buy obligation included in the loan agreement. Sancho has since garnered some interest – though nowhere near as much as he'd have hoped, and likely not from the suitors he envisioned, either. Where could Sancho end up this summer? Sancho last played for United in August 2024 in the Community Shield Final. (Photo by) Indeed, the 25-year-old has been linked with the likes of Fenerbahce, Juventus and Napoli. However, the latter's Sporting Director brazenly spoke out to announce the club would not be pursuing Sancho on the wages he was demanding. Turin has looked the most likely destination for him in recent weeks, so much so that United are even said to be considering paying him a £4.3m severance package to get him off the books once and for all. A permanent sale is crucial this summer, given that his contract will have expired this time next year. Inter Milan offer Sancho another route to Serie A According to Sky Sports Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, the Manchester City graduate has been brought up in conversations by Inter Milan, although any deal hinges on whether they can sign first-choice target Ademola Lookman. Inter, like United, are floundering to reinforce their squad in the aftermath of a truly calamitous campaign. The San Siro outfit finished as runners-up in the league, Champions League and slumped to a 4-1 semi-final defeat in the Coppa Italia at the hands of arch-rivals AC Milan. Taking a punt on a player like Sancho, however, could do more damage than good in the long run, especially when considering the salary he'll be expecting. Jahrome Hughes lifts lid on Melbourne Storm future after links to huge Perth Bears move
Melbourne Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes has doubled down on his desire to remain at the club with speculation the Perth Bears would be keen to make him a marquee signing in 2027. Hughes is off contract at the end of next year having signed a deal through to 2026, which is similar to teammate Ryan Papenhuyzen. There has been plenty made about what clubs would be interested in Hughes if he enters the market with the Perth Bears circling for a marquee signing to join the club. With new coach Mal Meninga appointed, there were talks either Papenhuyzen or Hughes could become the first $2 million NRL player with the club needing to make a statement. Hughes has been a huge part of the Storm's success in recent years and his deal ending before 2027 has left plenty up for speculation. Coach Craig Bellamy only recently signed on for one more season with no guarantee he will be there after 2026. However, Hughes recently admitted he was keen to remain in Melbourne and he has done so again having hinted a deal could be done soon. "I'm pretty keen to stay where I am and hopefully we can get something done really soon," he said on SEN Radio. "I know there has been chats about going to the market and I know the Perth Bears are coming in the next couple of years, but I love it down here in Melbourne." Hughes' latest comments are a blow to the Bears and rival clubs looking at an elite halfback. Hughes has formed a dangerous partnership with Cameron Munster, Papenhuyzen and Harry Grant in the Storm spine. Earlier this year, Hughes also hinted at his desire to stay in Melbourne, but was waiting on talks to develop. 'I haven't looked too far ahead with that sort of stuff,' Hughes said when his future was put to him. 'I think my name's probably only up there because I'm off contract around that same time. 'I haven't really thought about it, and if I have it my way then I'll be here forever, so I might have to talk to 'J-Rod' about that. I don't really know what Perth's like. I heard it's a nice place, but I haven't thought about it at all.' Ryan Papenhuyzen focused on winning NRL premiership Another player that has been linked to a number of clubs is Papenhuyzen. He has also been linked to the northern hemisphere rugby union competition R360. Papenhuyzen has been made aware of the reports and admitted most players would "have to consider" the huge money thrown at them. While the money was eye-opening, the Melbourne fullback remained coy on whether it was of interest of him to make a switch to rugby union. Instead he said he wasn't looking any further than aiming to win back-to-back competitions with the Storm. "I've just got a big focus for winning the premiership and hopefully going back-to-back next year and then we'll see, but you always look forward to your future and see what's happening," he said. "I'm sure my manager is doing a good job with that and has got it all under control."

Major question raised around Dolphins player after $1 million move for teammate
NRL great Corey Parker says the Dolphins should be trying to lock down Isaiya Katoa on a massive new 10-year deal after responding to reports teammate Herbie Farnworth is set to become the NRL's latest $1 million player. reported on Thursday that the Dolphins were preparing to offer Farnworth a bumper new extension worth $1 million per season after viewing him as a 'priority' signing for the club. The England Test star is contracted until the end of 2026 but will be able to negotiate with rival clubs from November 1 if he doesn't sign a new deal before then. It explains why Kristian Woolf's side is so keen to tie down Farnworth with a lucrative new deal after seeing him develop into one of the game's best centres, following his move from Brisbane after the 2023 season. Farnworth's try-scoring prowess and tackle busting ability has made him one of the Dolphins most important players. The Englishman has scored 11 tries, made a whopping 114 tackle busts, 12 line breaks and averages around 145 running metres per game this year. And the new deal at the Dolphins would make him the NRL's highest-paid centre and ward off interest from rival clubs. 'We certainly can (keep him), it's a priority of ours,' the Dolphins coach said about re-signing Farnworth. 'I like what Herbie brings. I love his personality and presence around the group and him as a player. He's a guy we want to be a Dolphin going forward and build the team around. 'He's playing his best footy and the great thing about Herbie is he's got improvement left in him. He's still on an upward track. It gets to a point where you almost expect that every week. He comes up with a big play every week... a line break or offload.' Encouragingly for Woolf and the club, Farnworth says he's 'very happy at the Dolphins' and excited by the trajectory of the team and development of their young stars, such as Katoa. The Englishman says he's striving to improve every year and feels like he has consistently done that across the last three seasons, but remains relaxed about his future with another year to run on his current deal. RELATED: Broncos star set to leave as teammate moves expose stark reality QLD legend piles pressure on Cleary with big call on Tom Dearden Roosters playmaker tipped to exit after being overlooked for veteran Corey Parker questions huge deal for Herbie Farnworth But Broncos great Parker questioned whether Farnworth was worth the eye-watering deal the Dolphins were preparing to offer him. "He's only a centre," Parker said on SEN radio on Thursday. "So is that what centre money gets these days, a million bucks? I love Herbie, I've known him since he was a 13-year-old kid, he's a great story." Co-host and Aussie cricket great Ian Healy argued that Farnworth is worth every cent and believes he's the type of marquee player the Dolphins can build the club around. But Parker said if Farnworth is going to earn $1 million-per-season, then the Dolphins should lock down Katoa on an even bigger deal. "If he's a million then Izzie Katoa is a 10-year-player and I'm signing him on a 10-year deal worth one-point something (million per season)," he added. Katoa has also been a standout for the Dolphins this season and is already being mentioned as a possible bolter for the NSW Origin side next year. In just his third season at the Dolphins since making his debut in 2023, the 21-year-old has emerged as one of the elite halfbacks in the NRL, and has five tries to go with his 17 try assists and 13 linebreak assists in 17 games this season. Katoa is contracted to the Dolphins until the end of 2028 after inking a three-year extension last year, and will inevitably command a seven-figure salary when he signs his next deal.
